A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If you want to bring remote guests into a live broadcast without Skype, start with a browser-based live studio such as StreamYard or Restream. They give guests a way to enter the show while the host controls when they appear on stream. Compare Riverside if you also want separate participant recordings for editing. The right fit depends on guest count, production workflow, destinations, and whether you need recordings after the live show—not on a universal “best” ranking.
What to use instead of Skype for a live-stream guest
A video-call app connects people to a conversation; a live studio connects guests to a production. For a stream, the host typically needs to invite a guest, check their camera and microphone, decide when to bring them on screen, and choose whether their screen share or presentation appears to viewers.
StreamYard and Restream are the clearest starting points in the available product documentation for that browser-oriented workflow. Riverside is a useful comparison when recording separate tracks for later editing matters as much as going live. These are product capabilities described by the vendors, not results of independent hands-on tests.
Compare the main options
| Service | Guest entry and host control | Production and distribution | Recording | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StreamYard | Host shares a studio link; guest joins in a supported browser, grants camera and microphone access, and enters a display name. The host decides when to add the guest to the broadcast. Mobile joining is also described by StreamYard. | Paid-plan documentation lists a guest greenroom and custom RTMP destinations. Paid-plan Guest Destinations lets signed-in guests add destinations, subject to per-guest and broadcast caps. | Paid-plan documentation lists separate local audio and video recordings for on-screen participants. | A browser-based talk-show workflow where the host wants to screen guests before putting them on air. |
| Restream | Guest controls include camera and microphone, screen sharing, presentations, an extra camera input, and private chat. The host chooses whether shared screens, presentations, or camera input appear on the stream. | Guest documentation covers these participation controls. Check current Restream documentation for the browser and device requirements applicable to your guests. | Not stated in the cited guest-feature documentation. | A guest workflow that needs presentation or screen-share controls. |
| Riverside | Riverside says guests can join from iOS or Android using its live-streaming app; its product page also describes screen sharing and presentations. | Riverside advertises multistreaming and audience engagement for live streaming. | Riverside advertises individual participant audio and video files, recording up to 4K video and 48 kHz audio. These are vendor-stated specifications, not independently measured results. | A live show where separate participant files and post-production are priorities. |
Limits and features can depend on plan and may change. StreamYard’s Help Center lists up to 10 on-screen participants total on paid plans, with additional backstage participants depending on plan. Riverside advertises up to seven guests. Check each service’s current plan and feature pages before planning a show around a participant cap.

How to choose for your show
Choose StreamYard for a host-led browser studio
StreamYard documents a straightforward guest path: the host sends a link, the guest enters the studio in a supported browser, and the host adds them to the broadcast when ready. That backstage step is useful for checking audio and framing before a guest becomes visible to viewers. StreamYard recommends a strong internet connection and says, “We recommend wearing earbuds or headphones to prevent audio echoes.” This is guidance from the StreamYard Help Center, not an independent test.
Its paid-plan documentation also describes separate local audio and video recordings for on-screen participants, a guest greenroom, and custom RTMP destinations. Guest Destinations is a paid-plan feature: guests must sign in to a StreamYard account to add destinations, each guest can add up to two, and a broadcast can have six guest destinations total. The feature applies to live studio streams.

Choose Restream when guests need to contribute visual material
Restream’s guest controls cover screen sharing, presentations, and an extra camera input, alongside camera, microphone, and private chat. The host controls whether shared material or an extra camera is shown to the audience, which helps keep a presentation from appearing automatically just because a guest enabled it.
Restream’s guest help article is dated April 7, 2026 and gives browser recommendations by desktop and mobile operating system. Because supported browsers and device instructions can change, confirm the current help page before sending guests exact setup directions.

Choose Riverside when editing the conversation afterward matters
Riverside’s product page advertises individual participant audio and video files as well as live streaming, making it worth comparing for interview, documentary, or panel workflows that continue into editing. Its page advertises recording up to 4K video and 48 kHz audio; treat those as Riverside’s specifications rather than a guarantee of what every device, connection, or configuration will achieve. Riverside also says guests can join from iOS or Android using its live-streaming app.
Choose OBS only if you want the extra production control
OBS is a different kind of choice: a production application rather than a turnkey guest-link studio. A StreamYard-authored comparison describes OBS as free and offering deep scene customization, but says it lacks a native guest-link workflow and typically needs third-party tools for remote guests. That is a vendor comparison, so use it as a workflow distinction rather than a neutral benchmark. If you choose OBS, plan a separate guest connection method and test how its audio and video enter your scenes before the live show.

Plan the guest workflow before going live
- Decide the guest’s role. Is the person only speaking, presenting slides, sharing a screen, or appearing from a second camera? Confirm that the chosen service supports the part they need to contribute.
- Check the participant limit against the plan. Count hosts and guests, and distinguish people on screen from people waiting backstage. StreamYard documents up to 10 on-screen participants total on paid plans, with additional backstage participants varying by plan; Riverside advertises up to seven guests. Confirm the current limits before inviting a larger panel.
- Send the right joining instructions. For StreamYard, send the studio link and ask the guest to open it in a supported browser, allow camera and microphone access, and enter a display name. For Restream, check its current device-specific browser guidance. For Riverside, tell mobile guests that its product page describes joining with its live-streaming app.
- Ask guests to prepare audio and connection. StreamYard recommends a strong internet connection and earbuds or headphones to reduce echo. Riverside’s live-streaming guidance recommends good-quality equipment, including a microphone and suitable camera; this is optional equipment context, not a requirement for the remote-guest workflow.
- Rehearse screen sharing and transitions. Have the guest share the intended screen or presentation before the show. Confirm the host knows how to put that material on air and take it back off.
- Check recordings and destinations. If you need separate files, verify the relevant plan and recording settings before the event. For StreamYard Guest Destinations, guests need StreamYard accounts, and per-guest and per-broadcast destination limits apply.
Common problems and fixes
- The guest can enter the room but viewers cannot see them. In StreamYard, guests are not on the broadcast until the host adds them. Check the studio and use the host’s on-air control.
- The guest has no camera or microphone. Ask them to grant browser permissions for both devices, confirm the intended camera and microphone are selected, and reload the studio if permissions were denied.
- There is echo or feedback. Ask the guest to use earbuds or headphones and avoid listening to the live stream through nearby speakers while their microphone is open.
- A shared screen or presentation is not on air. Enabling a share and showing it to viewers are separate actions in Restream’s documented workflow; the host must choose to display the shared material.
- A planned guest cannot join from a phone or tablet. Check the selected service’s current mobile and browser instructions before the event. Restream’s guidance is device-specific and dated April 7, 2026; Riverside describes app-based iOS and Android joining, while StreamYard documents mobile joining.
- A guest cannot add a destination. For StreamYard Guest Destinations, confirm the guest is signed in, the feature is available on the plan, and the per-guest and broadcast caps have not been reached.
- The show needs more scene control than the guest studio provides. Consider OBS with a separate remote-guest workflow, but rehearse the full signal path. OBS alone should not be assumed to provide a Skype-like guest invitation flow.
Optional host equipment
The core replacement for Skype is a guest-capable software workflow, not a hardware purchase. A host who wants to improve their own voice may consider a USB microphone for live streaming, but a microphone does not solve guest invitations, on-air controls, or screen sharing. Riverside recommends good-quality equipment as a production consideration; StreamYard specifically recommends earbuds or headphones for echo prevention.
Keep the YouTube channel live between guest shows
A guest studio solves the live interview or panel. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 with uploaded videos between events, StreamNeo is a different tool: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer can be off. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only and does not broadcast from a camera.
