A zero dropped-frame count in OBS does not rule out the cause of YouTube’s “poor connection” warning. OBS’s counter tracks a specific symptom: frames dropped because the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. It does not explain YouTube’s separate warning, and the precise trigger for this mismatch is not established in the available official guidance.
Use the warning, OBS statistics and one-variable-at-a-time tests to narrow down the problem. Don’t assume that the warning proves an ingest outage, a bad connection, or an OBS defect.
What zero dropped frames in OBS tells you—and what it doesn’t
The OBS Project defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That makes the counter useful, but limited: it reports the dropped-frame symptom OBS detects during the measured session; it is not a complete assessment of every condition that might cause YouTube to warn about stream health.
OBS’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, does not define YouTube’s warning logic for the case where OBS reports no dropped frames. The available evidence therefore does not establish why the warning appeared in your particular stream. Gather the warning context and test the connection systematically rather than treating either indicator as a definitive diagnosis.

Capture evidence before changing settings
When the warning appears, note the exact text and time. If YouTube Live Control Room provides stream-health details for that session, record those as well. In OBS, review the stream statistics and note the configured output bitrate and dropped-frame count. If possible, save the relevant OBS log for the same period.
This gives you a before-and-after comparison. Change one factor at a time; if you lower the bitrate, change servers and disable a VPN all at once, you won’t know which test mattered.
Run controlled connection tests
1. Check OBS’s bitrate and test a lower setting
Confirm the actual configured video bitrate in OBS rather than relying on a remembered or intended value. If the warning recurs, lower the bitrate for a controlled test and compare the warning and stream statistics with the previous session.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests using 75% of your total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate. Treat that as a heuristic, not a guarantee of a stable stream: a single speed-test result does not show whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate during the actual broadcast.
2. Try a different ingest server if available
Where your streaming service or settings let you choose a server, test another option while keeping the bitrate and other settings unchanged. This helps test whether the selected ingest path is a factor; it does not by itself prove that a server was faulty.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet
If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming. Keep the other variables the same so you can tell whether the change affects the warning or OBS statistics.

Inspect the existing cable and connections if you suspect a fault. An Ethernet cable for a streaming PC is relevant only if you need a wired link or have reason to suspect the current cable; buying one is not a proven fix for YouTube’s warning.
4. Check software that can affect network traffic
- Temporarily test without a VPN, if you use one and can safely disconnect it.
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software is interfering with OBS’s network access. Avoid leaving protection disabled; use a controlled test and restore your normal protection afterward.
- Look for bundled network-prioritization or optimization utilities that may alter traffic, and test their effect one at a time.
- Check whether the network adapter driver is outdated.
OBS’s guide also discusses Windows-specific network optimizations and TCP pacing, along with an IPv4-only setting. These are not universal fixes. In particular, if trying IPv4-only makes no difference, OBS advises returning to IPv4/IPv6.

A modem, router, network card, switch, extender or cable could contribute to instability. Check connections and the devices on the path between the streaming computer and router; where practical, test with fewer intermediate devices. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your setup.

If OBS’s listed troubleshooting steps do not resolve persistent connection trouble, OBS recommends contacting your internet service provider.

OBS describes dynamic bitrate adjustment as a way to lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. That may help keep a stream going, but the reduction can lower stream quality, and it does not repair the underlying connection issue. Use it as a fallback when you cannot resolve the cause, not as proof that the connection is healthy.
How to interpret the result
Judge each test by what changed: a different server tests the ingest path; a lower bitrate reduces sustained bandwidth demand; wired Ethernet tests local network stability; software checks test for interference; and hardware or ISP checks examine conditions closer to your local network and provider. If YouTube still reports poor connection while OBS continues to show no dropped frames, the mismatch remains unexplained by the OBS counter alone. Keep the timestamps and session evidence for any further diagnosis.
