Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For OBS Studio, a sensible free starting point is Cockos’ ReaPlugs VFX suite: OBS names it among the plugins used to develop and test its VST support, and Cockos offers it as a free download. That is compatibility evidence, not a claim that ReaPlugs sounds best or that every plugin in the package works on every current system. First check the format: OBS’s documented VST filter supports many VST 2.x plugins, but not VST 3.x.
What makes a VST plugin suitable for a live stream?
Choose by the audio problem you need to solve, then confirm the plugin can load in your streaming host. A plugin that is highly regarded in another audio application is not useful in OBS if its format or build is unsupported.
- Host and format: OBS’s documented VST filter supports many VST 2.x plugins. It does not support VST 1.x, VST 3.x, MIDI control or input, or shell VST plugins. See the OBS VST 2.x Plugin Filter documentation.
- Processing task: Match the effect to the problem—such as equalization, compression, gating, or noise reduction. Confirm the specific plugin’s features in its current documentation rather than assuming a whole collection includes a particular effect.
- System fit: Check that the plugin build matches your operating system, architecture, and host. A plugin may be VST 2.x yet still fail to appear or load on a particular setup.
- Stability and CPU: OBS warns that it has not tested every plugin, that some may crash, and that plugins can use significant CPU. Test before a public broadcast and watch system load.
The available compatibility evidence does not establish a measured winner for sound quality, latency, or CPU use. The recommendations below are starting points, not results of comparative testing.
Which VST plugins are worth trying with OBS?
ReaPlugs: a free starting point
Cockos’ ReaPlugs page describes the package as REAPER FX plugins for use in another host and offers it free. OBS lists the ReaPlugs VFX suite among plugins used to develop and test its VST support, which makes it a reasonable first package to investigate—not a guarantee that every effect will work in your setup.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pay attention to the package’s age: Cockos’ page lists VST v2.36 downloads for 32-bit and 64-bit systems dated January 2, 2016. Before installing, check whether the available build is appropriate for your operating system and OBS installation.
Melda Production plugins: another compatibility lead
OBS also names Melda Production among plugins used in development and testing. That does not amount to an endorsement or verify that every Melda plugin, version, or format works in OBS. Check the individual plugin’s format and system requirements before choosing it.

Use OBS’s built-in noise suppression when that is all you need
If your aim is to reduce mild room or white noise, start with OBS’s built-in Noise Suppression filter rather than installing a VST solely for that purpose. OBS offers RNNoise and Speex: its documentation describes RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex. Stronger Speex suppression can distort the voice. Read the OBS Noise Suppression Filter documentation and compare the voice with the filter on and off.
OBS also documents NVIDIA Noise Removal as an option within its filter when the NVIDIA Broadcast SDK redistributable is installed. Treat this as a separate noise-removal option, not as a VST plugin.

How to add a VST plugin to an OBS audio source
- Install a compatible plugin. Confirm it is a VST 2.x plugin and select the build that matches your system. OBS documents Windows
.dll, macOS.vst, and Linux.soor.ofiles. - Open the audio source’s filters. In OBS Studio, find the microphone or other audio source in the Audio Mixer and open its filters. Add a VST 2.x filter to that source.
- Select the installed plugin. Choose the plugin from the filter’s plugin selector. OBS documents default search locations for Windows, macOS, and Linux; if your plugin is missing, consult the OBS documentation and the plugin maker’s installation notes for the applicable path and build.
- Set the effect conservatively. Make one change at a time and listen to the result. For speech, check that processing does not make words harsh, clipped, unnaturally quiet, or difficult to understand.
- Test before going live. Record a private test or use another non-public check. Listen back, confirm the right source is being processed, and watch CPU use. Save or note the settings before experimenting because OBS warns that some plugins may crash.
On Linux, OBS notes that setting VST_PATH replaces its other VST search locations. If you change that variable, make sure it includes the directory containing the plugin; otherwise a plugin that was discoverable through a default location may no longer appear.
When to use NVIDIA Broadcast instead
NVIDIA Broadcast is a separate software workflow that presents a virtual microphone; it is not a general requirement for VST plugins. In the setup described by NVIDIA’s guide, you select the Broadcast virtual microphone as the audio input in your streaming app. Avoid applying the same noise-removal effect both in Broadcast and in OBS, since duplicate processing can degrade the result.

| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin is absent from OBS’s selector | Unsupported format, wrong installation location, or a build mismatch | Confirm it is VST 2.x, check the documented file type for your OS, and verify the host’s search path and the plugin’s architecture. |
| Plugin appears but will not load | Incompatible build or plugin-specific problem | Check the plugin maker’s compatibility notes and try the matching build. OBS has not tested every plugin and warns that some may crash. |
| Audio becomes distorted or unnatural | Processing is too strong or multiple noise filters are active | Reduce the effect, disable duplicate suppression, and compare a test recording with the filter bypassed. Strong Speex suppression can distort voices. |
| OBS becomes unstable or CPU use rises | Plugin demands more resources or conflicts with the setup | Remove or disable the most recently added filter, retest, and monitor CPU while adding effects one at a time. |
| Plugin disappears after changing Linux paths | VST_PATH replaced the default search locations |
Include the plugin’s directory in VST_PATH or restore the applicable search configuration described by OBS. |
Keep the audio chain separate from keeping a stream online
VST plugins process audio inside a streaming setup; they do not keep an unattended YouTube stream running when your computer is off. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than live microphone audio, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not camera input.
