Understand the broadcast and stream resources
YouTube models a live event and its incoming audio-video feed separately. A liveBroadcast represents the event viewers watch; a liveStream represents the feed sent to YouTube. A broadcast is bound to a stream, so identify the broadcast and its associated stream before monitoring the feed. See the YouTube Live Streaming API overview and the LiveBroadcasts resource reference.
The liveStream resource is the place to inspect ingestion state and health. YouTube describes its health information as data that can help identify, diagnose, and resolve streaming problems in the LiveStreams resource reference.
Retrieve the stream status and health fields
Use the Live Streaming API to retrieve the liveStream resource associated with the broadcast you are operating. Request the resource’s status information, then read status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus from the returned representation. The health object includes a status code, the time of its last update, and configuration issues.

Keep these dimensions distinct in the monitor: ingestion answers whether YouTube is receiving data; health summarizes the current assessment of streaming configuration and performance. Use the LiveStreams reference for the resource fields and documented values.

Interpret ingestion state separately from health
What streamStatus means
The documented streamStatus values describe the stream’s ingestion state. In particular, active means YouTube is receiving data. It does not mean that health is necessarily good or that no configuration issues exist. Report both fields instead of collapsing them into one green-or-red indicator.

What healthStatus.status means
good: there are no issues at warning severity or worse.ok: there are no error-severity issues, though warning-level issues may still exist.bad: one or more error-severity issues exist.noData: YouTube’s backend has no health information.
Severity adds useful context: info has no adverse performance effect, warning means performance is not optimal, and error means the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. Consult the configuration issues reference for the documented issue types and corrective context.
Use configuration issues to diagnose problems
When the health status is not good, inspect each entry in configurationIssues[]. Record or display its type, severity, reason, and description; these fields turn a summary into a diagnosis operators can act on. Match the reported type to YouTube’s issue reference for its explanation and suggested corrective context.

For example, YouTube defines videoIngestionStarved as insufficient incoming video to maintain smooth streaming. The documentation warns that viewers may experience buffering. Treat that report as an input-feed problem to investigate, rather than assuming that an active ingestion state rules it out.
Account for how recent the health assessment is
lastUpdateTimeSeconds is a Unix timestamp in seconds representing when YouTube last updated the health information. Convert it as seconds when displaying a human-readable time, and include its age or update time in operator-facing output. A status with an older update timestamp should not be presented as if the assessment were just refreshed.

The cited API references do not establish a universal polling cadence or quota budget. Choose a polling policy based on your application’s quota and operational requirements, and consult current quota guidance before deploying a poller; do not treat the lifecycle guide’s transition timing as a general polling interval.

A broadcast’s monitorStream is a broadcaster-facing preview feature for reviewing event content. It is not the liveStream health object and does not replace inspection of streamStatus, healthStatus, or configuration issues. The LiveBroadcasts reference describes the broadcast resource; the broadcast lifecycle guide says to confirm the bound stream is active before transitioning the broadcast to testing. That testing transition can take several seconds or up to a minute.
