If your Oracle Cloud VM is still running but the encoder has crashed, restart the encoder inside the guest operating system and configure its service manager or another process supervisor to relaunch it after failure. If the VM itself rebooted, also configure the encoder to start at boot. YouTube’s auto-start setting can start the YouTube stream when an encoder connects; it cannot restart a crashed encoder. Oracle Cloud infrastructure recovery is a separate layer and does not guarantee the stream returns to YouTube.
First identify what failed
“The stream crashed” can mean three different things. Check the VM and encoder before choosing a recovery mechanism: an operating-system supervisor cannot repair a failed cloud host, and OCI recovery will not by itself launch an encoder inside the guest.
| Failure | What to check | Recovery layer |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder process exited or hung | Is the VM reachable, and is the encoder process absent or unresponsive? | Guest OS service manager or another process supervisor |
| Guest OS or VM rebooted | Review uptime, boot logs, and instance status. | Configure the encoder to launch at guest startup; separately investigate the reboot |
| OCI host or infrastructure problem | Review OCI instance status and notifications for infrastructure events. | OCI’s instance recovery behavior, followed by guest and YouTube checks |
Set up encoder restart on the VM
The exact setup depends on the guest operating system and encoder. The title does not specify either, so there is no safe universal service file or command: Linux distributions, Windows, and encoder applications expose different startup and restart controls. Use the documentation for your chosen OS and encoder to configure both startup and recovery.
- Identify your environment. Record the VM’s operating system and version, encoder application and version, and how the encoder is currently launched.
- Keep credentials available securely. Store the YouTube stream URL and key where the encoder can access them after a restart, but restrict access to the key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (Manage live stream settings). If you reset the key, update the encoder’s saved value.
- Configure launch at boot. Set the encoder to start after the guest OS starts. An OCI instance start or reboot brings up the VM, but the encoder still needs to launch within the guest.
- Configure restart after unexpected exit. In the OS service manager or chosen supervisor, set a restart policy for the encoder. Choose a delay and a limit or backoff for repeated failures rather than allowing an uncontrolled crash loop. Make sure logs capture startup errors and repeated exits; add an alert if unattended operation matters.
- Test the full recovery path. Use a private or unlisted stream, deliberately stop the encoder process, and confirm it relaunches and restores a usable feed. Separately test a guest reboot if you need boot recovery. Check the encoder logs and YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, not just whether a process exists.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use. Treat the key as a secret; anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- In the encoder, enter the exact URL and key. Where supported, use RTMPS: YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Copy the RTMPS address from Live Control Room rather than substituting a guessed endpoint (Stream using an encoder).
- Choose the appropriate YouTube auto-start and auto-stop behavior in Live Control Room. These settings govern whether connecting or stopping the encoder starts or stops the YouTube stream; they are not a process watchdog (Manage live stream settings).
- For a scheduled stream workflow that requires manual approval, wait for the preview and use the required Go Live action. Do not assume an encoder reconnect bypasses that step; follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow for the event.
Before relying on the setup, test with a private or unlisted stream. YouTube recommends checking the preview, stream health, and audio/video, and testing a backup encoder if one is configured (Troubleshoot live streaming).

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What OCI recovery does—and does not do
OCI attempts to recover supported instances when underlying infrastructure is unhealthy. The recovery behavior depends on VM type, shape, and configuration. Oracle’s current Instance Maintenance documentation describes failure detection within one minute and, when immediate recovery is unavailable, a healthy move and restart beginning within five minutes. These are descriptions of infrastructure recovery, not a YouTube stream restoration guarantee or an encoder-process restart policy.
After an OCI recovery, check that the instance is running, the guest OS has completed startup, the encoder process is active, and YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video. Review OCI status metrics and notifications to help determine whether an infrastructure recovery occurred.

Troubleshoot a restart that does not restore the stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder does not relaunch | Startup or supervisor configuration is missing, invalid, or repeatedly failing. | Inspect guest OS service and encoder logs, confirm the executable and working directory, and verify the restart policy and boot dependency using the documentation for your OS and encoder. |
| Encoder runs but YouTube receives no feed | Wrong stream URL or key, expired/reset key, or encoder connection problem. | Compare the saved URL and key with Live Control Room; replace the key in the encoder if it was reset. Check encoder logs and YouTube stream health. |
| YouTube preview appears but scheduled event is not live | The event workflow may require a manual Go Live action. | Use the scheduled stream’s Live Control Room flow and confirm the preview before starting the event. |
| Feed drops or becomes unstable despite an active encoder | Outbound network disruption or insufficient upload capacity can interrupt ingest. | Check network reliability and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee. |
| VM was unavailable or restarted | Guest reboot or OCI infrastructure event. | Check OCI instance status and notifications, then confirm the guest booted and the encoder launched. Infrastructure recovery and application recovery are separate. |
| Repeated rapid restarts | The encoder may be crashing on the same configuration error or dependency failure. | Use logs to find the underlying error, add a restart delay or limit, and resolve the cause before allowing unattended retries to continue. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded recordings without keeping an Oracle VM, encoder, or home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for uploaded videos—not a camera-based live feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
