Usually, no meaningful electricity-cost reduction should be expected from lowering OBS output bitrate alone. Bitrate mainly changes how much data OBS sends and the resulting picture quality. It is not a dependable way to reduce a PC’s power draw. To find your actual 24/7 cost, measure the computer’s average power at the wall while it is streaming, then calculate its energy use at your local electricity rate.
Why bitrate usually does not lower the PC’s power bill
Bitrate sets the stream’s data rate. Lowering it can reduce upload-bandwidth demand, but it also reduces the data available to represent the picture. OBS’s guidance identifies output resolution and frame rate as direct ways to reduce rendering or encoding workload; its x264 guide discusses bitrate primarily as a bandwidth and image-quality trade-off. Neither establishes a predictable electricity saving from lowering bitrate.
This is an inference from the available technical guidance, not a controlled power test. The cited material does not compare the same PC and stream at different bitrates or give a bitrate-specific wattage saving. A particular setup might draw a little less under different settings, but you cannot assume a lower bill without measuring it.
How to calculate the electricity cost of a PC running 24/7
Measure the whole PC at the wall
- Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the computer’s wall power. Include the OBS scenes, sources, and encoder settings you actually use for the stream.
- Record average draw over a representative period. If comparing settings, keep the stream and other activity as similar as possible, change one setting at a time, and measure long enough to smooth out changes in scene complexity and PC activity.
- Convert the average watts to energy: average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours running = kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- For an always-on 30-day month, estimate energy as average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30. Multiply the resulting kWh by your own electricity price per kWh to estimate the energy charge.
This gives an estimate, not a universal monthly bill. Your PC’s draw, local rate, taxes, and billing period affect the result. Published measurement work has examined average energy consumption and processor use, but it does not provide a universal PC wattage or bitrate-specific savings figure.

Which OBS settings are more relevant to workload?
OBS says, “Frame rate also impacts both rendering and encoding performance.” That makes frame rate a more direct workload lever than bitrate in the guidance considered here. The overall effect on wall power still depends on the particular computer and stream.
- Output resolution: OBS says reducing output resolution can reduce GPU resources and encoder load.
- Frame rate: Fewer frames mean less rendering and encoding work. OBS suggests trying 30 fps instead of 60 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Encoder and preset: x264 uses the CPU, and its presets trade CPU usage against bitrate and bandwidth. NVIDIA describes NVENC as a dedicated hardware encoding section on supported GPUs. The cited guidance does not establish that either choice lowers total system power on every PC.
- Scenes, sources, and contention: Complex scenes, media or browser sources, filters, other tasks, and GPU contention can all add workload. They may be more useful places to investigate on an unattended stream than bitrate alone.
Lower CPU or GPU utilization does not by itself prove that wall power fell. Measure the complete system if electricity cost is the goal.

Choose bitrate for the picture and connection, not as a power threshold
YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance accessed in 2026 lists these examples for 1080p:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not electricity-saving thresholds. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. If your connection cannot sustain the configured rate, OBS advises lowering bitrate; dynamic bitrate can also reduce quality. But lowering bitrate too far can make the picture look worse, particularly with more motion or higher resolution.

For a documentary loop, judge image quality against the actual footage and motion in your video, and allow enough upload headroom for a stable connection. If the stream is unstable, bitrate may be worth adjusting for network reasons. If the goal is a lower power bill, compare measured wall power instead.
