In OBS, create a separate holding scene with a child-appropriate branded image or short animation, keep it ready in the scene list, and switch the live program to it when the video stops or needs attention. OBS’s documented loop controls help repeat media, but they do not establish a universal automatic detector for every playback failure. Rehearse the failure and monitor the stream so you know what viewers will see.
Prepare a calm, readable holding screen
Make a still graphic or short local animation at your stream’s canvas dimensions. Keep the message simple—for example, “We’ll be right back”—and include your channel or documentary brand. Use a calm visual, readable text, and safe margins so the message remains legible on different screens. Avoid alarming error language or asking children to leave the stream or take action elsewhere. These are design recommendations, not YouTube requirements.
Create a separate holding scene in OBS
- In OBS, add a new scene for the holding screen and give it a clear name, such as “Holding screen.”
- Add the still image or local holding animation as a source. Fit it to the output canvas and check the text and artwork in the preview.
- Keep this scene separate from the scene used for the video. That makes it straightforward for an operator to select the fallback when playback needs attention.
Configure the video loop
Choose the OBS source that matches your media:

For either source, test the settings with the files you intend to stream. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes what happens when media playback ends; that behavior should not be mistaken for detection of every decoder, file, or network fault. A still image layered under the video can show through if the video source is hidden, but it will not cover a frozen or still-visible video frame. A separate scene is the clearer operator-controlled fallback. OBS Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022).
Rehearse the failure and monitor the live feed
- Before a public stream, rehearse privately or unlisted. Test a missing file, playback reaching the end, or the failure most likely in your workflow.
- Observe what OBS actually displays. Confirm that the operator can select the holding scene and that it becomes the live program output.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview before starting the stream. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says, “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.” Continue monitoring audio and video quality while live.
- If you use a backup encoder, test failover before depending on it. YouTube recommends verifying the switch; its guidance suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network cable and confirming that the player moves to the backup.

Set the audience accurately for children’s videos
In YouTube Live Control Room, designate whether the stream is Made for Kids based on the actual content and intended audience. YouTube lists factors such as subject matter, intended or actual audience, child actors, characters or toys that appeal to children, language, activities, children’s songs or stories, and other audience evidence. The holding card does not change the nature or intended audience of the video, and the presence of children alone does not automatically settle the designation.
For streams marked Made for Kids, YouTube restricts features including live chat and personalized advertising. The designation is not the same as automatic inclusion in the YouTube Kids app. YouTube says its guidance is not legal advice; if you cannot determine your COPPA or other legal obligations, consult qualified legal counsel. Troubleshoot common fallback and loop problems
- The video stops at the end of the file: Check the Media Source Loop and playback-end settings, or the VLC Video Loop Playlist setting, depending on the source. Re-test with the actual file or playlist. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- The holding screen appears in OBS preview but not to viewers: Check that the holding scene is the active program scene, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring the feed. YouTube live streaming tips.
- Picture or audio quality is poor: Inspect encoder status and CPU load as part of troubleshooting. YouTube live-streaming troubleshooting.
- A backup encoder is expected to take over: Test that handoff before relying on it, and confirm the player rolls to the backup. YouTube live streaming tips.
- A live-stream restriction is in effect: Do not try to evade it by streaming through another channel. Follow YouTube’s live-stream rules: YouTube live streaming tips.
