Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a Streamlabs Alert Box sound will not play, first determine whether the problem is the audio file or the alert’s settings and routing. Streamlabs lists MP3, OGG, and WAV as supported Alert Box formats. If a particular MP3 fails, Streamlabs’ older guidance recommends converting it to OGG; then save the alert and run a test. If the test is still silent, check mute, monitoring, audio track, and OBS routing settings.
First, identify which sound is missing
The file-format steps below apply to uploaded sounds used by Streamlabs Alert Box. A missing game or desktop sound is a separate capture and routing problem; changing an alert file’s format will not fix system audio capture.
- If one alert sound fails but other Streamlabs audio works, start with the file and that alert’s configuration.
- If alerts or other audio are broadly missing, check mute, monitoring, track selection, and routing.
Check the sound file and its format
Use a supported Alert Box format
Streamlabs’ Alert Box guide lists .mp3, .ogg, and .wav as supported audio formats: Setting up Your Streamlabs Alerts. A supported extension does not guarantee that a particular file is valid or will play in every setup.
Try OGG if an MP3 fails
Streamlabs’ article Sound files not working, last updated December 17, 2021, says MP3 files may fail with some streaming software and recommends converting troublesome sounds to OGG. Re-upload the converted file and wait for the upload or conversion to finish before testing. Pair this older workaround with the current supported-format list and a test in your own setup.

The documentation cited here does not specify codec, sample rate, bitrate, duration, or maximum file size for Alert Box audio, so there is no documented value to tune in those fields.
Save the alert and run a test
- Open the relevant Alert Box settings in Streamlabs and confirm the sound is assigned to the alert you are testing.
- Save the settings after changing the file or alert configuration.
- Use the Alert Box test controls, or Streamlabs Desktop’s test widgets, to trigger a test alert before going live.
- Listen for the sound through the expected output device. If the test remains silent, continue with the routing checks below.
A test helps distinguish a problem with the configured alert path from an issue that appears only during a live broadcast.

Check mute, monitoring, tracks, and OBS routing
- Mute: Check whether the recent-events sound control is muted.
- Monitoring device: Confirm that Streamlabs is monitoring through a device you can hear. Streamlabs’ audio troubleshooting guidance says to select “Monitor and Output” when the monitoring device differs from the desktop audio device.
- Audio track: Check the alert’s selected audio track and whether that track is included in the output where you expect to hear the sound.
- OBS routing: If your setup uses OBS, inspect the alert’s “Route Audio to OBS” option and verify that the routed audio reaches the intended output.
Streamlabs describes these checks in its audio troubleshooting guide. Menu wording and available controls may vary across software versions and setups.
If the missing sound is desktop or system audio
Do not treat desktop capture as an Alert Box file-format issue. Streamlabs says Windows Desktop can capture microphone and system audio directly, while macOS does not natively allow direct desktop-audio capture and requires a virtual audio driver for that purpose. This distinction applies to capturing desktop/system audio, not to playing an uploaded Alert Box sound file. See Streamlabs’ desktop audio capture guidance for the operating-system distinction.

If the sound repeats or echoes
A repeated alert can point to duplicate sources or windows rather than a bad file. Streamlabs’ echo troubleshooting guidance suggests closing extra pop-out windows and checking browser-source behavior; removing and recreating a source may also help. Some of that guidance uses older OBS or XSplit labels, so the exact menu names may differ in current versions.
When the usual fixes do not work
If a supported-format file still fails after re-uploading, saving, testing, and checking mute and routing, the documentation does not establish one definitive cause. Note whether other alerts and system audio work, which file type you tested, and which output device and route you use; then contact Streamlabs Support with those details.
