Yes—but only if the laptop stays awake, connected to the internet, and able to run its streaming software with the lid shut. On Windows, check Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does and, if available, set the plugged-in action to Do nothing. Laptop behavior varies by model, so test a short private stream before relying on a long broadcast.
What closing the lid does to a livestream
Closing a laptop lid may put the computer to sleep. If that happens, the streaming software stops working or loses its connection, and the YouTube livestream can end or disconnect. Microsoft notes that most laptops can be set to sleep automatically when the lid is closed (Microsoft Support: Battery saving tips for Windows).
Keeping the display dark is not the same as putting the computer to sleep. The key is whether your particular laptop remains awake and maintains its network connection while closed. The operating system, manufacturer settings, and model all matter; check the manufacturer’s guidance on closed-lid use and airflow before leaving a laptop running this way for an extended period.
How to test a closed-lid stream on Windows
- Identify your laptop model. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for running the laptop with its lid closed, including ventilation and thermal requirements.
- Connect power. For a long broadcast, use the plugged-in lid action rather than relying on battery behavior.
- Open the lid action setting. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- Review the plugged-in action. If the option is available, select Do nothing for when the lid is closed while plugged in, then save the change. Options can vary by hardware and manufacturer.
- Run a short private test. Start a private YouTube livestream, close the lid, and confirm from another device that the stream remains live and the connection stays stable. Do not assume the screen going dark proves the laptop stayed awake.
- Restore your preferred power setting afterward. If you do not want the laptop to keep running when closed in other situations, change the lid action back after the broadcast.
Choose a YouTube streaming method
YouTube supports streaming from a computer by webcam or by encoder software. A webcam workflow is a direct computer-based option; an encoder workflow is for creators who need streaming software to send the broadcast. Either way, the laptop must remain awake and connected. YouTube’s eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; its current help page also says creators must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before scheduling.

Set the audience correctly for a children’s story
A story intended for children should be designated accurately as made for kids in YouTube’s audience settings. Set this in Live Control Room. YouTube says the made-for-kids setting disables live chat and features including comments and personalized ads on the stream. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
The content being a children’s story is separate from whether a child is the streamer or appears in the broadcast. YouTube says livestreamers must be at least 16. Under-16 participants on an adult-owned account require the adult to be visibly present. Review YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions if a child will participate.
