If it is missing across apps, investigate its connection, hardware switch, Windows access, enablement, or driver. If it works elsewhere, check the problem app’s permissions and selected source.
First, find out where the problem is
Test the device in Windows’ own camera or audio settings, or in another app that can use it. Then compare that result with the app where it fails.
- Missing in Windows and across apps: focus on the device connection, physical switches, Windows access settings, whether the device is enabled, and its driver.
- Works elsewhere but not in one app: focus on that app’s permission and the source selected in its settings.
This distinction matters because permission to use a device does not automatically select that device in an app. For example, Zoom can have microphone access and still be set to a different microphone.
Fix a camera Windows does not detect
- Check the connection. For an external webcam or capture card, reconnect it and confirm it is properly connected. If practical, try another USB port.
- Check physical controls. Some laptops have a camera switch or keyboard button that disables the built-in camera. Make sure it is on.
- Check Windows camera access. Review camera privacy settings and allow access for the relevant app. If you use a desktop app, check the setting that allows desktop apps to access the camera.
- Check Device Manager. Find the camera device and confirm it is enabled. If Windows offers an update for the device, follow the instructions for your Windows version and laptop.
- If it still fails, reinstall the camera device. Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guide describes uninstalling and reinstalling the device driver, then scanning for hardware changes. Follow its current steps for your device and Windows version: Microsoft: Camera doesn’t work in Windows.
Fix a microphone Windows does not detect
- Check Windows microphone access. Allow microphone access, including access for apps or desktop apps as applicable.
- Check whether the webcam microphone needs camera access. Microsoft notes that a webcam’s microphone may also require camera access, so review that permission if you use one.
- Test the intended input. Check Windows audio settings and confirm the microphone you want is the one being used.
- If Windows still does not detect it, investigate the audio driver. Microsoft includes audio-driver reinstallation among later troubleshooting steps: Microsoft: Fix microphone problems.
When Zoom cannot see the camera or microphone
Camera
First confirm the camera works in Windows. In Zoom, select the intended camera rather than assuming the app will choose it automatically. If you use Zoom in a browser, grant camera access in the browser; for the desktop app, check operating-system access.

Zoom lists outdated Zoom or Windows software, disabled device settings, incorrect camera selection, missing permissions, and interference from other programs or devices among possible causes. Close other apps or websites that may be using the camera, reconnect the device, restart the laptop, and check for relevant software and driver updates. Microphone
Choose the desired microphone in Zoom’s audio device menu. If it does not appear, check the operating system’s microphone permissions; on Windows, check access for apps and desktop apps as appropriate. Select the capture source in OBS
Camera or capture card
- In the OBS scene where you need video, add a Video Capture Device source.
- Open the source properties and choose the camera or capture card from the Device dropdown.
- If the device does not appear, return to Windows detection and permissions checks. On Windows, OBS requires the device driver to support DirectShow output.

Audio device
Add an audio input or output device source in the scene, then select the device to capture. Check the scene itself: a source added to a different scene will not be available in the one you are using. See OBS: Audio Sources.
Choose the right next step before buying hardware
A laptop’s built-in camera or microphone, a USB webcam or headset, and a capture card can all be part of a capture setup, but the right fix depends on whether the operating system detects the device, whether the app has access, and whether the correct source is selected. Do not buy a replacement just because an app cannot see a device. A new USB webcam is only a reasonable fallback if the built-in camera remains unusable after you have checked access, selection, hardware controls, and drivers. Confirm that any external webcam is compatible with your laptop and app; buying one will not fix a permission or configuration problem.
