You can run a YouTube radio station with OBS over Indian broadband if your connection can sustain the stream’s upload bitrate at the place and time you’ll broadcast. Measure upload performance rather than relying on your plan’s advertised speed, start with a modest video profile, test with representative audio and motion, and watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicator. You’ll also need YouTube Live access and permission to broadcast every track.
Before you start: check access, connection and music rights
Confirm YouTube Live access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check access in YouTube Studio before configuring OBS; YouTube Help does not display a publication year for this eligibility requirement. See YouTube live streaming tips.
Measure the connection where the stream will run
There is no single Indian broadband speed that guarantees a stable radio stream. ISP, location, plan conditions, time of day and local network conditions differ, and the official guidance cited here does not establish a universal minimum upload speed or data allowance. YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Measure at the computer and connection you will use, preferably at the time you intend to broadcast, and leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to a brief speed-test result.
OBS sends the stream directly from your computer to YouTube; it does not route the feed through OBS servers. The OBS Project explains, “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” That makes the stability of your actual connection important, not just the headline speed on your broadband plan. Check your provider’s terms for any plan-specific limits.

Clear rights to the music
Before broadcasting, confirm that your rights cover live streaming and the territories where the stream will be available. YouTube’s Live Stream Terms say creators must have necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches; unresolved matches can interrupt or terminate a stream. A license may not prevent an interruption unless the rights owner has allowlisted your channel through Content ID. If a licensed track is being flagged, contact the rights owner about allowlisting. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and its guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Access to a song or a music subscription alone does not establish permission to rebroadcast it.
Set up the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Set the stream’s title, visibility and other metadata, then copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains how the key lets the encoder send a feed to YouTube and lets YouTube accept it.
- Protect the stream key: Treat it like a password. Do not share it or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Connect OBS: In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service if that option is available in your installed version, then follow the matching connection workflow. If entering details manually, use the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Software labels can change between releases, so use the current OBS workflow rather than relying on an outdated screen name. OBS’s Help Portal provides official support resources.
- Build the radio scene: Add the audio source or sources you have rights to broadcast and a visual, such as a still image or restrained animation. Check that the intended audio reaches OBS’s meters and that the scene displays correctly before starting the broadcast.
Choose OBS output settings for the connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe frequency that must not exceed four seconds. The following video bitrate figures are YouTube Help recommendations; its page does not display a publication year. They are not guaranteed speeds for every connection in India.

| Video profile | H.264 recommended bitrate | H.265 or AV1 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For a static radio image, a lower resolution and frame rate can be a sensible starting point: a still visual usually does not need 60 fps. This is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement. Pick an available supported codec and profile that your system can encode steadily, then check the picture and sound in a test stream. YouTube’s full table and encoder guidance are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced recommendations list stereo audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.
- Transport: Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends.
Test the stream, then choose latency
- Start a private, unlisted or otherwise controlled test broadcast before relying on the station. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Use audio and any moving graphics that resemble the actual program. A test with only a still image may not reveal problems caused by the live scene.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room and OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. If dropped frames increase or OBS shows a yellow or red connection indicator, the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate.
- Lower the bitrate or video profile, address local network instability, and repeat the test. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
For a mostly one-way radio stream, very low latency may offer little benefit. YouTube warns that lower latency can increase viewer buffering. Choose a more stable latency setting unless real-time audience interaction is important, and consult YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for the available options.

Troubleshoot common connection and broadcast problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise or the connection indicator turns yellow or red | The connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the chosen bitrate. | Reduce bitrate or resolution, test again, and investigate local network instability. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide covers connection problems. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The encoder may not be connected with the correct stream URL or key, or the channel may not have live access. | Check the URL and key against Live Control Room, confirm that the key has not been reset, and verify channel eligibility in YouTube Studio. |
| The stream is interrupted after music is detected | YouTube may have matched third-party content or the broadcast rights may not cover the use. | Review the match and your license. If you are authorized to use the track, ask the rights owner whether they can allowlist your channel through Content ID. |
| Viewers report buffering despite a connected encoder | Low-latency settings can increase viewer buffering, or the stream profile may not be appropriate for the viewing conditions. | Test a more stable latency option and review YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With OBS, your computer and connection must remain available for the broadcast. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded recording or playlist live; it does not broadcast from a camera. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
