For an SDR gaming rerun on YouTube, start with OBS output at 1920×1080, 60 fps, H.264, CBR at 12 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps. Use this only if your PC encodes smoothly and your sustained upload can carry the bitrate reliably; otherwise, step down to 1080p30 at 10 Mbps or 720p60 at 6 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, not guarantees that every PC or Indian connection can sustain them.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube gaming reruns
The right starting point depends on the game’s motion, the encoder headroom of your PC, and reliable upload capacity from the actual streaming location. YouTube recommends matching stream quality to available upload bandwidth and testing before going live. The official H.264 recommendations below were checked on October 3, 2026; they are not India-specific speed thresholds.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions. That does not remove the need for a stable upload to YouTube’s ingest.
Choose based on your bottleneck
- Choose 1080p60 if both encoding and upload remain stable during representative gameplay.
- Choose 1080p30 if 60-fps encoding strains the PC or the higher bitrate is unreliable.
- Choose 720p60 if smooth movement matters but you need to reduce pixel load and bitrate.
- Choose 720p30 when lower system and network demand matters more than motion smoothness; judge clarity with your particular game.
Enter the settings in OBS
- Set the output size and frame rate. Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 or 1280×720 and Common FPS Value to 60 or 30 to match your chosen option. The canvas is your composition space; the output resolution is what the stream sends. The canvas can remain at the resolution used to arrange your game and overlays.
- Set the streaming service and protocol. In Settings → Stream, choose YouTube and connect the account or provide the stream key using OBS’s available workflow. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS delivery.
- Choose H.264 and CBR. In Settings → Output, use an H.264 encoder and set rate control to CBR. Hardware encoder options vary by supported hardware and platform; a supported hardware encoder may reduce CPU load, but test it under gameplay rather than assuming it will perform identically on every PC.
- Set video bitrate and keyframes. Enter the bitrate for the selected resolution and FPS from the table. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Set audio and SDR color. Use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps; YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo. For an SDR stream, use Rec. 709. Do not apply HDR settings unless the source, encoder, and full stream setup support HDR; YouTube documents a separate HEVC/HDR setup.
Labels and available encoder choices can vary with OBS version, operating system, and hardware. If an option is unavailable, use the closest supported H.264 configuration and verify the resulting stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

Check upload and PC headroom before a long rerun
There is no single upload-speed number that makes 1080p60 safe across India. Run a speed test from the location and time you will stream, then test with other household or office network use accounted for. Your connection needs room for bitrate variation and competing traffic; a test at one moment cannot guarantee a stable long broadcast.
- Start an unlisted test stream at the intended resolution, FPS, and bitrate.
- Use representative gameplay movement plus the expected game and voice audio; static scenes alone do not reveal motion or audio problems.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, and watch OBS for encoding or network warnings.
- If frames drop, audio breaks up, or the PC becomes unstable, lower one demand at a time—first bitrate or resolution/FPS as appropriate—and run the test again.
YouTube recommends a speed test for upload bitrate and explicitly advises testing before a live stream. A fast result is not enough if it is inconsistent during the actual rerun.

Set up rewind during the live broadcast and replay afterward
Live rewind: DVR
Enable DVR in the YouTube live-stream settings if viewers should be able to pause or seek backward while the rerun is still live. YouTube notes DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Check the setting and the viewer experience before relying on rewind.
After the stream: archive
The archive is separate from live DVR. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Confirm archive visibility and privacy after the broadcast, and keep a local copy if the recording matters.

Local OBS recording as a backup
OBS recommends MKV for recording because an unexpected interruption is less likely to corrupt the entire file. If you remux to another format afterward, confirm the resulting file plays before deleting the MKV. Advanced Output settings can use a separate recording encoder, but OBS warns that choosing a recording quality other than “Same as stream” can use additional system resources. Test simultaneous recording and streaming on the same PC.
Troubleshooting common rerun problems

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules for game reruns
OBS output settings do not grant permission to rebroadcast game footage, music, cutscenes, or other material. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check the game publisher’s streaming policy and music rights. A live stream or archive can receive a copyright claim or be restricted even when the technical settings are correct. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization decisions are separate from encoder configuration; adding a rerun label or changing bitrate does not establish rights or originality.

Before scheduling a recurring rerun, review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies and the rights attached to every audio and video element. Keep proof of permission where applicable.
