To shuffle several game replay videos in OBS while your YouTube livestream stays on, add them to an OBS VLC Video source and turn on Shuffle Playlist. Keep that source in the scene being broadcast, or transition to the scene that contains it. A scene transition changes what viewers see; it does not require you to end the stream.
Set up a shuffled replay playlist
- Install VLC if needed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Add the source to your replay scene. In OBS, select the scene where the replays should appear, then in Sources choose + and select VLC Video.
- Add your replay files. Open the source’s Properties and add the game replay videos to its playlist.
- Enable shuffling. In the same Properties window, check Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents this option as off by default.
- Choose whether the list repeats. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should start over after the playlist finishes. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, but check the setting rather than assuming it has not been changed.
- Set visibility behavior. Review Visibility Behaviour to choose what happens when the source is hidden: it can continue, pause, or stop. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible, which can reset playback when you leave and return to the scene.
- Check the output. Confirm the source is visible in the intended scene and that replay audio is routed as you want. Test the specific files before relying on them live; OBS does not certify every replay file or guarantee gapless transitions between files.
OBS documents the playlist controls and defaults in its Media Sources guide.
Keep the broadcast live while changing scenes
The scene shown as live in OBS is what viewers see. To show the replay scene, select it and use OBS’s normal scene transition; there is no need to stop the broadcast just to change scenes. In Studio Mode, you can prepare or edit a scene on the preview side while the current scene remains live, then transition when ready. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Make sure the VLC Video source is in the scene that is actually live, or transition to the scene that contains it. Adding the source to a different scene does not make it appear in the current output.

Choose the right source for one replay or many
| Need | OBS source | Relevant control |
|---|---|---|
| Play one video file, with an option to restart it when shown | Media Source | Restart playback when source becomes active. It applies to an individual file; it does not shuffle a playlist. |
| Play several files in a playlist, in order or shuffled | VLC Video | Shuffle Playlist, Loop Playlist, and Visibility Behaviour. |
For a random selection from multiple replay files, use VLC Video. The Media Source restart option only controls how one file behaves when its source becomes active; it is not the playlist shuffle setting. OBS describes both source types in its Media Sources guide.
Troubleshoot a missing, frozen, or restarting replay
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC, matching the OBS architecture. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The replay starts over after switching scenes: Check Visibility Behaviour. With the documented default, a source stops when hidden and restarts when visible. Choose a behavior that suits your scene workflow, and keep the source active if uninterrupted playback matters.
- The replay is black or frozen but the stream is still live: Confirm the source is in the active scene and visible, check that the playlist entries point to the intended files, and test the files individually. OBS’s documentation does not establish that every replay format will decode successfully.
- The playlist plays in order instead of shuffling: Open the VLC Video source’s Properties and check Shuffle Playlist.
- The playlist stops after its last file: Check Loop Playlist; enable it if the list should repeat.
- The YouTube broadcast itself disconnects: Treat this separately from playlist behavior. OBS identifies network instability between the computer and the remote ingest server as a cause of dropped frames or intermittent disconnections; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded game replays to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
