Why Your YouTube Gaming VOD Livestream Shows as Offline After Looping

A replay can remain available after a YouTube live event ends. Check Live Control Room, the encoder feed and archive status to find out what happened.

If YouTube marks your gaming VOD livestream as offline after a loop, first check whether the live event is still active in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and whether your encoder is still sending a feed. A replay or looping video is not, by itself, proof that YouTube is receiving an active broadcast. The exact cause depends on how your loop is set up, so distinguish the event’s live status from the replay before changing settings.

Why a looped VOD can appear offline

YouTube treats a live broadcast and its replay as separate states. In the encoder workflow, the event ends when the creator ends it in Live Control Room and stops sending content from the encoder. A replay may then be available on the channel as a video. So seeing a VOD play, or seeing a looped file, does not establish that the live event is still active or receiving a feed. YouTube’s published guidance does not diagnose every looping setup, so this is the key distinction to investigate rather than a guaranteed explanation for a particular offline message.

YouTube describes Live Control Room as the place to manage the stream and its settings. The stream key is what allows YouTube to accept the encoder’s feed. If the event has ended, or YouTube is no longer receiving the expected feed at the stream URL, the event may not be live even if the source video still exists.

Check the event and feed in this order

  1. Check the event status. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Confirm whether the event is active or has ended. YouTube’s overview of creating a live stream with an encoder describes managing and ending the event there.
  2. Verify the encoder feed. Confirm that your encoder is still sending the intended video to YouTube’s stream URL and using the configured stream key. YouTube explains stream keys and live-stream management in Manage live stream settings. If your encoder has stopped sending, the loop in your local file or playback setup does not establish that YouTube is receiving anything.
  3. Look for an archive separately. Check the channel’s Live tab and YouTube Studio’s Content area for a replay. An ended event can have a replay even though it is no longer live; YouTube explains replay availability in Learn about live streams.
  4. Check your own recording. If you recorded a local archive, verify that file independently. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup; see Archive live streams.
  5. Do not use DVR as a live-status test. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live event. It does not keep an event live or determine whether an ended stream has an archive. YouTube notes that rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; see Turn on DVR on live streams.

Where to find the replay—and the 12-hour caveat

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a long gaming broadcast. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable backup. The 12-hour threshold is an archive limitation, not a guarantee that a replay will be available after a particular processing delay.

What to do based on what you find

  • Live Control Room says the event ended: treat the broadcast as ended and look for its replay in the Live tab or Studio Content area. A looping source file does not reopen an ended event by itself.
  • The event should still be active, but the feed is absent: inspect the encoder’s connection to the stream URL and confirm it is using the intended stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the connection and event-ending workflow; the precise encoder-side remedy depends on the software or service you use.
  • You need the recording, not an active broadcast: look for the archive, and check your local recording if the archive is missing—especially for a stream longer than 12 hours.
  • The event is live but viewers cannot rewind: check the DVR setting as a viewer-control issue, not as a fix for offline status or missing archives.
