Prevent duplicates at the point where they enter your workflow: when YouTube imports an RSS feed, set its starting point after the latest episode already on your channel; when your own automation adds videos to a playlist, compare the incoming YouTube video ID with the IDs already in that playlist before inserting it. Keep a durable record of processed episodes as a backup, and treat YouTube’s duplicate-in-playlist response as a successful no-op—not a reason to retry indefinitely.
These checks address different layers. An RSS feed tracks source episodes, a YouTube playlist contains video objects, and an always-on scheduler may maintain its own playback queue or history. Keeping those records distinct is essential to diagnosing repeats.
Identify where the duplicate is entering
First determine whether YouTube is uploading episodes from an RSS feed, your automation is inserting videos into a playlist, or a separate streaming scheduler is replaying items from its own queue. The right safeguard depends on which layer is responsible.
| Workflow | Primary duplicate check | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube RSS ingestion | Choose an import starting point after the most recent episode already on YouTube. | An incorrect cutoff can bring in older episodes, and YouTube says RSS release dates are not verified. YouTube RSS guidance. |
| Custom playlist automation | Compare the incoming video’s YouTube ID with IDs in the target playlist before inserting. | Requires authorized API access and implementation; a separate scheduler may have independent queue state. Playlist items list and Playlist items insert. |
| Separate always-on scheduler | Use the scheduler’s own played-item history or exclusion controls, if available, and test its restart behavior. | YouTube’s RSS and API documentation does not establish how a particular scheduler queues or remembers playback. Check that product’s current documentation. |
If YouTube imports episodes from an RSS feed
Set the import cutoff using your channel’s actual history
- Review the channel’s existing podcast episodes and identify the latest episode already uploaded to YouTube.
- When connecting the RSS feed, choose the episode starting point after that latest existing episode. YouTube recommends this cutoff to avoid uploading duplicates. Confirm the selection before completing setup; an overly early cutoff can import old episodes.
- Check the new uploads after setup. RSS ingestion is available only in selected countries and regions, and new feed episodes are automatically uploaded when the feature is in use. See YouTube’s RSS podcast guidance for current setup details and availability.
Do not use release dates as unique episode IDs
YouTube may sort RSS-uploaded episodes using a feed release date, but states that the date is not verified. A date can help with ordering; it is not a reliable deduplication key. Track episode identity and upload state instead. YouTube’s RSS release-date guidance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Account for deletions and corrected files
- Deleting an RSS-backed video from YouTube may not keep it gone: YouTube says it can be uploaded again if it remains in the RSS feed. Remove the episode from the feed if you want to prevent that re-upload. If the goal is to hide the YouTube copy while preserving the feed, consider making it private instead.
- YouTube’s documented correction flow re-uploads the episode as a new video and makes the previous video private. The replacement has a different YouTube video ID, so update any playlist history or automation mapping that refers to the old video. See YouTube’s RSS guidance.
If your automation maintains the playlist
A YouTube podcast show is represented as a playlist, with episodes as videos in that playlist. YouTube recommends full-length episodes in listening order and discourages mixing clips, different shows, or videos from other channels into a podcast playlist. See YouTube’s podcast playlist guidance.
Use the video ID for playlist membership
- Identify the target playlist ID and the incoming video’s YouTube ID.
- Call
playlistItems.listfor the target playlist and collect the video IDs from its playlist items. The playlist-item resource exposes the video identifier. See the list method reference. - If the incoming ID is already present, skip the insertion. If it is absent, insert the video as a playlist item using the target playlist ID and video resource ID. See the insert method reference.
- Persist processed episode identifiers between runs as a second guard against retries, overlapping workers, or transient failures. For reconciliation between systems, keep the RSS episode GUID and resulting YouTube video ID together. This is an engineering pattern, not a YouTube-mandated schema.
- Handle YouTube’s
videoAlreadyInPlaylistresponse as an already-completed outcome. Do not retry that insert in a loop. The documented quota cost is 1 unit forplaylistItems.listand 50 units forplaylistItems.insert; avoid needless writes. See Google’s API quota-cost documentation.
Keep identity records across corrections
An RSS GUID identifies the source episode in your feed; a YouTube video ID identifies a published video object. They are not interchangeable. Store their mapping so a corrected re-upload with a new video ID can be reconciled without mistakenly treating the original as the replacement.

Check the always-on scheduler separately
A playlist’s membership and a streaming scheduler’s playback state are not necessarily the same thing. A scheduler may read the current playlist, cache items in a queue, repeat at the end, or store playback history across restarts—but those behaviors are product-specific and are not established by YouTube’s playlist API documentation.
- Look for scheduler settings or documentation covering duplicate exclusion, played-item history, queue refresh, and repeat behavior.
- After changing playlist contents or scheduler settings, test with a small controlled playlist and confirm the result after both a normal cycle and a scheduler restart.
- If an item returns, check the YouTube playlist and the scheduler’s own queue/history separately. A clean playlist does not prove the scheduler has discarded a cached queue.
A series playlist is not a general deduplication mechanism: YouTube says a video cannot appear in more than one series playlist. See YouTube’s series playlist guidance.

Troubleshoot recurring duplicates
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| An old episode uploads after RSS setup. | The chosen starting point was earlier than the latest episode already on YouTube. | Review the channel’s existing episode history and RSS import cutoff. Do not rely on feed release dates alone. |
| A deleted RSS episode returns. | The episode remains in the RSS feed and is eligible for re-upload. | Remove it from the feed to prevent re-upload, or make the YouTube copy private if you need to hide it while keeping the feed episode. |
| The automation inserts the same episode again. | It did not compare the incoming video ID with current playlist items, lost its processed-ID state, or failed to handle retries safely. | List playlist items, compare IDs before insertion, persist processed IDs, and treat videoAlreadyInPlaylist as success. |
| A corrected episode appears as a separate item. | The correction created a new YouTube video ID. | Update the RSS GUID-to-video-ID mapping and review the old, now-private video in the playlist and scheduler state. |
| The playlist has no duplicate, but the stream repeats an item. | The scheduler may have cached its queue or maintain independent playback history. | Check that scheduler’s queue, refresh, repeat, and restart behavior in its current documentation; YouTube’s sources do not define those product-specific controls. |
