You can loop a prerecorded sermon from an old Windows laptop to YouTube Live using one OBS scene and a Media Source with Loop enabled. Whether the laptop can do it reliably depends on its hardware and the church’s real upload connection; OBS’s minimum requirements are not a streaming-performance guarantee. Start with modest video settings, rehearse privately or unlisted, and check YouTube’s stream preview and health before relying on it for a service.
Will an old Windows laptop handle OBS?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer without the laptop’s specifications and a sustained test. OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements, but cautions that a compatible system may still be unable to stream or record. Check the installed Windows version, free storage, and whether the laptop remains stable while playing the sermon and streaming.
OBS performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. For an older machine, start at 30 fps and a restrained resolution appropriate to the source video and audience. Avoid decorative browser sources and capture sources the church does not need. These are conservative starting points, not a guarantee about an untested laptop. OBS System Requirements and its Overview Guide explain the relevant factors.
Test the machine you will actually use
If you have more than one candidate laptop, compare them by playing the source file and streaming at the intended resolution and frame rate for a sustained rehearsal. Note whether playback is smooth and whether OBS reports problems. Do not choose based only on a machine’s age, a specification label, or the minimum requirements.

Install OBS and make the sermon repeat
- Download OBS Studio from the official OBS Project site. OBS describes the software as free and open source and lists Windows 10 and 11 support. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the resulting setup.
- Open OBS and create one scene for the sermon loop. Keep it simple; extra sources can add work for an older laptop.
- In the scene’s Sources area, add a Media Source and select the sermon video stored on the laptop. OBS documents MP4 and other common video and audio formats. A single video file does not require a VLC Video source or playlist.
- Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. The video will start again when it reaches the end. Confirm the restart during rehearsal. See OBS Media Sources.
- Play the source in OBS and check that both picture and sermon audio are present at suitable levels. Keep the laptop powered and prevent sleep or shutdown during the service; a local OBS stream depends on the computer continuing to run.
Choose OBS output settings for the laptop and connection
In OBS, open Settings → Output to choose streaming output settings, and Settings → Video to set the output resolution and frame rate. The precise available options depend on the installed OBS version and the laptop’s encoders. Start modestly: 30 fps and a resolution the laptop can sustain while playing the source. A 60 fps output can be more demanding than 30 fps, particularly on older hardware.
Encoder
Use a supported encoder and assess it in a test stream. OBS notes that hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but older hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. Do not assume an older integrated GPU has a suitable encoder. If OBS offers a hardware encoder, compare it with software encoding under the intended settings and watch for smooth playback and stream health. OBS explains the trade-offs in its Hardware Encoding guide.

Codec, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s published encoder recommendations include H.264, CBR (constant bitrate), and a two-second keyframe interval. Its bitrate guidance varies with resolution and frame rate, so use the row matching the output you choose rather than copying an arbitrary bitrate. The two-second interval is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measurement of this laptop or connection. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current guidance.
Measure upload speed from the church’s actual streaming location, preferably at the time and on the connection you will use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate. Shared connections and Wi-Fi congestion can reduce available upload; a speed test at another location or time may not reflect service conditions. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and reliability.

Connect OBS to the church’s YouTube channel
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility and activation before the service rather than discovering a restriction at go-live. YouTube’s Get started with live streaming page explains channel requirements and setup.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and locate its stream key and server details.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if available, then connect using the stream key and server details as prompted by the current OBS interface. If the interface offers a direct account connection instead, follow its prompts.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a screen capture, share it in public notes, or disclose it to people who do not need access.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and verify the sermon scene and audio before starting the encoder.
Rehearse the sermon loop before the service
- Schedule time before the service to test the complete setup from the church’s streaming location. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate.
- Start streaming from OBS early enough for the signal to reach YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview, confirm audio, and verify the sermon restarts at the end.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during the rehearsal. If it reports a problem, reduce output demands or investigate the connection before the service rather than assuming the minimum specifications are enough.
- Keep the laptop connected to power and the network. If it has Ethernet and the wired connection is reliable, that can avoid some Wi-Fi variability; an adapter may help only when the laptop lacks a port and the network supports it. An adapter cannot add internet bandwidth or fix an unreliable service.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, and OBS advises checking the scenes and stream quality before an event. Its YouTube live streaming tips offer further preparation guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The stream will not start: Confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements, the selected stream is active, and OBS has the correct stream key and server details. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- YouTube shows no picture or sound: Check that the intended scene is selected, the Media Source points to the correct local file, and the audio is not muted. Confirm the preview in Live Control Room before treating the stream as ready.
- The sermon does not restart: Reopen the Media Source properties and check that Loop is enabled. Let the file reach its end during a test to confirm the behavior.
- Playback stutters or the laptop struggles: Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and test again. Try a supported hardware encoder if available, but compare it with software encoding because older hardware encoders may lower quality at the same bitrate.
- YouTube reports connection or stream-health problems: Check the actual upload speed and stability at the streaming location, ensure the chosen bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and consider Wi-Fi congestion or other users sharing the connection.
- The laptop stops streaming after a while: Check power, sleep, and shutdown behavior, then repeat a sustained rehearsal. A brief successful test does not establish that the laptop will remain stable for the entire service.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the old laptop is unreliable or you do not want a computer and home or church connection to stay on for a continuous loop, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the sermon recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
- Nothing has to stay running at home: StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus 24/7 looping, playlists, and StreamNeo team support.
