Usually, YouTube is waiting because the encoder has not started sending a usable video and audio feed. Creating or scheduling a broadcast sets up the live event, but it does not produce the signal: a camera-and-mixer setup, computer encoder, or other sending service must transmit to YouTube before the stream can show a preview.
What “waiting for encoder” means
A YouTube Live broadcast and the incoming encoder feed are separate parts of the workflow. You can prepare a broadcast page and set its title, thumbnail, and schedule while no video is being transmitted. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires configuring and starting a sender, then checking that YouTube receives the feed.
The exact wording can also appear as a status inside a particular encoder. For example, the Cobalt 9992-ENC manual defines “Waiting for Encoder” as the encoder not attempting to connect to the RTMP server. On that device, a stopped encoder, invalid or missing input, or disabled RTMP output can explain the status. That manufacturer-specific definition should not be assumed to describe every YouTube screen or encoder.
Troubleshoot in this order
-
Start the encoder output
In the church’s software or hardware encoder, confirm that streaming or encoding output is actually running. A prepared or scheduled event can wait indefinitely if nothing is sending. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps for the current workflow.

-
Verify a real video and audio input
Check the camera, capture card, video mixer, or media source, then inspect the encoder’s local preview and input status. If the encoder has no valid source—or its encoding core has not started—there is no usable feed to send. The Cobalt 9992-ENC manual documents these possibilities for that product.
-
Check the destination and output configuration
Confirm that output is enabled and the encoder is configured with the intended YouTube stream information. Verify that the selected stream setup or key belongs to the broadcast you are trying to send to. A wrong destination or key is possible, but the waiting message alone does not prove the key is wrong; first confirm that the encoder is running, has input, and is attempting to send.

-
Distinguish a stopped sender from a connection failure
If the encoder says it is running but not connected, inspect its destination and RTMP parameters, as well as the network and DNS path. The Cobalt manual distinguishes a waiting state from “Not Connected”: on that encoder, the latter means it is running but unable to connect, with possible causes including an unreachable server, incorrect RTMP parameters, or failure to resolve the server name. Look for the equivalent status details in your software or hardware rather than treating every label as universal.
-
Check YouTube’s received preview and stream health
Once output is running, look in YouTube for incoming video and audio and read the current stream-health message. If the feed arrives but YouTube flags its format or bitrate, compare your encoder configuration with YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Recommendations and controls can change, so consult that page rather than relying on old preset values.

Change equipment only after checking the basics
Do not start by buying a new encoder if the church already has a working sender. A stopped output, absent source, disabled connection, or configuration problem may explain the status without requiring new hardware.
What the message does—and does not—tell you
- It points to an absent or unusable incoming encoder feed; the existence of a broadcast page does not establish that a sender is transmitting.
- The phrase can have a device-specific meaning. In the Cobalt 9992-ENC manual, it means the encoder is not attempting to connect to the RTMP server; other products may use different labels or definitions.
- If the sender is running but disconnected, investigate the destination, connection, and name resolution rather than assuming the encoder is simply stopped.
- A title, thumbnail, or scheduled time describes the broadcast but does not create its video or audio signal.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church’s goal is unattended, continuous playback of prerecorded videos—not a live camera or mixer feed—StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is not a fix for a stopped camera encoder, missing live input, or a sender that cannot connect.
