How to Make Church Sermon Videos Play Without Gaps in a YouTube Live Loop

Loop a single sermon or a playlist through OBS into YouTube Live, and test every transition: loop settings repeat playback but do not guarantee gap-free joins.

To repeat a church sermon in a YouTube Live broadcast, loop the video in the encoder—not with YouTube’s viewer-side Loop button. In OBS Studio, enable Loop on a Media Source for one sermon, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for several. Connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, then test the entire sequence. These settings repeat playback, but they do not guarantee a frame-perfect, gap-free transition between files.

What “without gaps” means in a live loop

A YouTube viewer can use YouTube’s Loop control to repeat ordinary playback for themselves. That does not create a live broadcast. For a YouTube Live loop, the encoder must keep sending the repeated video and audio as its outgoing feed.

There is an important distinction between continuous streaming and seamless file transitions. OBS can replay a file or playlist, but its documentation does not promise that one file will join the next with no pause, silence, or visible change. Test the actual transitions on the machine and setup you plan to use; do not assume that a loop setting guarantees gapless playback.

Choose the OBS source for your sermon

One sermon repeated continuously

Use a Media Source and enable its Loop option. OBS defines this option as replaying the file when playback completes. OBS lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.

Check the source’s activation behavior as well as its loop setting. Restart-on-activation and close-file-when-inactive settings affect what happens when the source is hidden, shown, or inactive. If the source is unintentionally deactivated or its file is closed, playback may not continue as you expect.

Several sermons in a fixed order

Use an OBS VLC Video source, add the sermon files in the order you want, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. Leave shuffle off if the service order matters, and check the source’s visibility behavior against how your scene is set up.

For one file, a Media Source is the simpler setup. For a sequence, the VLC playlist gives you an ordered set of files and a playlist loop control. Whichever you choose, verify the transition quality rather than treating the setting as a guarantee of gapless output.

Set up and test the loop in OBS

  1. Prepare the files. Put the sermon recording or recordings on the computer running OBS, decide the playback order, and make sure the files play correctly before adding them to a scene.
  2. Add the media source. In your scene, add a Media Source for a single sermon, or a VLC Video source for a multi-file playlist. For VLC Video, install VLC first if the source is not available.
  3. Set playback behavior. Turn on Loop for a single Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video. For a playlist that must follow a set order, leave shuffle off. Review activation and visibility settings so the source stays active and plays as intended.
  4. Build the program scene. Keep the media source visible in the scene sent to the broadcast. Add a title card, church name, or other branding only if it does not cover the sermon image or cause the media source to stop.
  5. Check picture and sound. Play the complete sequence locally. Watch and listen at every file boundary, confirm the order, and check framing, aspect ratio, and audio continuity. If you hear silence or see a pause, adjust or prepare the source files and test the revised sequence again.
  6. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. Enter those details in the encoder settings in OBS. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
  7. Preview before broadcasting. Start sending the OBS feed and check the YouTube preview. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then select Go live when the feed is ready.
  8. Watch a full cycle. Before relying on the loop publicly, let at least one complete cycle play through the YouTube preview. Check transitions, audio, picture, and playlist order on the intended setup.

Keep the broadcast stable

Allow upload bandwidth headroom

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% beyond the total stream bitrate. This is an operational recommendation, not a measured guarantee. Network disruption can interrupt a stream, so do not plan to use every bit of available upload capacity for the broadcast.

Preview and monitor the stream

Test with audio and motion similar to the real sermon broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any messages from YouTube, and monitor both audio and video while the stream is running. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest; use the protocol supported by your encoder and avoid changing advanced encoder settings without checking compatibility.

Consider backup encoding only if the operation needs it

A backup encoder is an optional resilience measure, not a requirement for a basic sermon loop. If you configure a backup, test failover deliberately—for example, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network connection—and confirm that the player switches to the backup as expected.

End, archive, and schedule the stream deliberately

You can stop the content from the encoder to end a live stream; YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions also describe selecting End stream and stopping the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the current Live Control Room behavior and account settings before planning a longer broadcast.

YouTube also documents auto-start and auto-stop controls for encoder streams. Check how the selected stream is configured before relying on those controls to start or end a service automatically.
