A UPS can keep a church’s local streaming equipment powered during a mains outage, but it cannot guarantee that the internet connection stays online. To size it, add the actual wattage of the encoder or streaming computer, modem or ONT, router, and every other essential device; then check the UPS maker’s runtime data at that combined load against the outage duration you want to bridge.
What a UPS can—and cannot—protect
A UPS supplies battery power to the devices connected to it when mains power is interrupted. For an always-on YouTube sermon stream, that can prevent a local power cut from immediately shutting down the equipment. YouTube cautions: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A powered modem and router do not ensure that the ISP’s service or upstream network remains available.
Think of the stream as a chain: the video source and encoder, any necessary audio or production equipment, the modem or fibre ONT, the router, and the internet connection to YouTube. If a required local device loses power, the stream may stop; if the connection beyond the church fails, a UPS alone cannot fix it.
How to choose the right UPS size
1. List the equipment the stream actually needs
Write down the complete signal chain for your church. It may include a streaming computer or hardware encoder, modem or ONT, router, and other equipment required to produce the stream. The exact list depends on how your video and audio are connected.

2. Find the real load
Use equipment specifications or a suitable power measurement to establish each device’s watt load. Add the wattage for the devices that must remain on together. Do not size the UPS for the computer alone if the network equipment or another essential part of the chain would also lose power.
3. Compare load, VA rating, and runtime
Schneider Electric’s UPS buying guide advises adding device wattages and selecting a UPS with a VA rating higher than the total device watt load. That is a sizing principle, not a universal VA recommendation: your required capacity depends on your equipment and the UPS model. Runtime also depends on battery capacity and connected load, so consult the manufacturer’s runtime information at the expected load rather than assuming a standard number of minutes.

- LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system
Decide how long you want the stream to bridge an outage, then check that the UPS’s usable power, VA rating, output, and runtime at your load suit the equipment and target. Keep nonessential devices off the backup where practical; anything added to the UPS draws from its available capacity and can reduce runtime.
4. Check output and connections
Confirm that the UPS output and connections are compatible with the devices you intend to back up. Check the specifications for the India-market model you are considering, and verify that every essential device can be connected safely. A stated capacity by itself does not establish how long that particular setup will run.

Set up the stream for the connection you have
Choose YouTube encoder quality and settings that your available upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends testing before the event and maintaining upload bandwidth headroom; other people or devices sharing the connection can limit the bandwidth available to the stream. A UPS does not add upload capacity or prevent a busy network from affecting stream quality.
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the relevant quality and connection, and test the actual setup rather than relying on a setting that only works under ideal conditions. YouTube recommends RTMPS for streaming. Its guidance is about YouTube streaming; do not treat requirements for government webcasts as rules for a church’s independent YouTube channel.

Rehearse a power cut before relying on backup
- Prepare the encoder in advance. Confirm that the intended stream and equipment are ready before the service, rather than troubleshooting initial setup during the broadcast.
- Start a representative test. Preview the stream and check that picture, sound, and connection behave as expected.
- Test on UPS power. With the stream running in a suitable test, simulate a mains interruption using the UPS maker’s safe procedure. Confirm that the encoder, modem or ONT, router, and other required local equipment remain powered.
- Check the internet separately. Verify that the ISP connection remains usable during the test. Local equipment staying on is not proof that upstream service will stay available during a real outage.
- Exercise any planned failover. If you use encoder failover, test it in advance. Check that a local recording or archive is intact, and monitor stream quality as YouTube recommends.
YouTube Help says, “Make sure you thoroughly test your setup before your event.” Include backup power in that rehearsal so you know how your actual equipment behaves.
Troubleshooting: what to check when the stream drops
- Encoder or computer shut down: Check that it is connected to the UPS and that the combined load is within the UPS’s usable capacity. Revisit the runtime data at that load.
- Router or modem went off: Confirm that each required network device—not just the encoder—is backed up and connected correctly.
- Devices stayed powered but YouTube disconnected: Check whether the ISP or upstream connection was disrupted. A UPS does not guarantee internet continuity.
- Stream quality deteriorated: Check upload capacity and competing network use, then choose settings the connection can sustain reliably and test again.
- Backup did not last as long as expected: Compare the connected load with the manufacturer’s runtime information. Additional devices draw from the available runtime; do not rely on a runtime figure that applies to a different load.
India-specific scope
There is no single UPS size or runtime that can be recommended for every church in India without knowing its equipment, local power conditions, and desired backup duration. Internet availability during an outage also depends on the local ISP and network path. NIC’s webcast services page is scoped to central and state government institutions; it should not be read as setting requirements for an independent church YouTube stream.

Or let it run in the cloud
A UPS is for a church’s local equipment and its live camera or encoder chain. For uploaded-video streams, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
