Ubuntu Server LTS is the practical default for a church building a headless server, especially when its published hardware guidance and documented maintenance path fit the installation. Debian Stable is a sound alternative when the person responsible already knows Debian and has confirmed support for the chosen hardware and packages. Neither distribution, by itself, makes a YouTube stream always-on: the right choice depends first on whether the machine sends the live video or only hosts a supporting service.
First decide what the server will do
“Sermon server” can mean two materially different things. One computer may capture or encode the service and send it to YouTube; another may simply host a supporting service while a separate encoder sends the finished feed. Linux distribution selection matters in both cases, but YouTube’s encoder settings apply to the computer actually sending the live video.
- Video encoder and sender: check hardware encoding capability, capture devices, network capacity, and the encoder software’s requirements. The sources available here do not establish that Ubuntu or Debian performs better for encoding, or that a particular small board can encode your intended sermon stream.
- Supporting-service host: choose a supported OS image that the administrator can maintain and recover. A modest supporting workload may suit compact hardware, but that does not establish its suitability for video encoding.
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to stream live. An encoder is one available method, alongside mobile and webcam streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and methods.
Ubuntu Server LTS vs Debian Stable
| Decision factor | Ubuntu Server LTS | Debian Stable / LTS | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | Ubuntu says LTS releases receive five years of standard security maintenance for packages in Main; Expanded Security Maintenance is available through Ubuntu Pro. | The Debian LTS project aims to extend Stable releases to at least five years. Architecture and package coverage vary with project capacity. | Confirm the exact release, packages, architecture, and maintenance period you need. Sources: Ubuntu release cycle and Debian LTS schedule and scope, updated 2026-08-31. |
| Headless administration | Ubuntu documents a text-based, headless Server environment and installation guidance. | A sensible option where the administrator already has Debian experience. | Familiarity can make routine updates and recovery easier, but it is not a performance comparison. Source: Ubuntu Server. |
| Hardware | Ubuntu publishes Raspberry Pi Server images and a board support matrix. Its documentation lists Raspberry Pi 5 support with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS. | Check architecture and device support for the specific Debian release; the available sources do not establish a comparable Debian board matrix. | Check the distribution’s current image and support information for your exact device before installing. OS support does not prove encoding performance. Source: Ubuntu Raspberry Pi downloads and support matrix. |
| YouTube encoding | No distribution-specific YouTube encoding performance evidence is established. | No distribution-specific YouTube encoding performance evidence is established. | Choose the encoder and verify its requirements separately; YouTube publishes ingest recommendations, not a Linux distribution ranking. |
| End-to-end reliability | An LTS release does not guarantee power or internet availability. | Stable packages do not guarantee power or internet availability. | Plan for bandwidth, power, monitoring, rehearsals, and a recovery procedure. |
When Ubuntu Server LTS is the better fit
Favor Ubuntu Server LTS if you want a documented headless server path, or if your specific hardware is listed in Ubuntu’s support guidance. Ubuntu’s stated five years of standard security maintenance applies to packages in Main; it is not a promise that every package is covered for that period. ESM is available through Ubuntu Pro.

When Debian Stable is the better fit
Favor Debian Stable when the administrator already knows Debian well and has checked that the chosen release supports the required hardware and packages. Debian LTS aims for at least five years of coverage, but verify whether the architecture and packages your system needs are included.
If the Linux machine sends the sermon to YouTube
Set up the encoder against YouTube’s current recommendations, then validate the real system under rehearsal conditions. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for encoder ingest. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Exact settings should match the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Use the target stream’s bitrate, not a guessed minimum
As one concrete example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. That is a recommendation for that codec and format, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that your hardware can encode it. If you choose a different codec, resolution, or frame rate, use YouTube’s corresponding current recommendation rather than copying this example.
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Add the video and audio rates when assessing the total, and allow for other traffic sharing the connection. This is YouTube’s guidance, not a measurement of the church’s connection; disruptions can still interrupt a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips for upload bandwidth and network reliability.

Prepare the channel and encoder before the service
- Confirm live access: verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Use YouTube’s live controls to create or schedule the stream and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a camera shot, recording, shared screenshot, or public chat.
- Set ingest and encoding: select RTMPS if supported by your encoder, enter the stream key through the encoder’s private settings, and configure codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and bitrate for the planned stream. Use YouTube’s current encoder page for the exact target format.
- Check the upload link: test the connection at the venue and time it will be used. Confirm that total outbound bitrate fits available upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom; do not treat a speed-test result as proof of uninterrupted service.
- Rehearse the complete signal path: YouTube advises configuring ahead of time, starting at least 15 minutes before the event, checking the preview, testing encoder failover, and checking local archive files. Follow the detailed preparation guidance at YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Monitor during the service: watch YouTube’s stream-health information and listen for audio problems; confirm the local recording is being created if you rely on one. Assign someone to respond to a dropped connection or silent feed instead of assuming the server will recover automatically.
Reliability is an operations plan, not a distro feature
A server that must support a weekly service needs attention to the whole chain: power, the capture and encoding equipment, the network path, YouTube ingest, and a person able to respond when something fails. A long support horizon helps with maintenance, but it does not keep a router powered or restore a failed connection.
- Document who applies security updates and who checks the machine before a service.
- Keep a tested fallback for a failed encoder, computer, or internet connection. YouTube specifically recommends testing encoder failover; the fallback itself must fit your venue and service plan.
- Check preview, audio, stream health, and local archive output during rehearsal and during the actual broadcast.
- Use the exact supported OS image for the machine, and preserve recovery information—including how to replace or reset a compromised stream key.

For a self-hosted server, compare the hardware and any replacement parts, power, backup connectivity, and the time someone must spend updating and checking it. The available sources do not establish a church-specific build cost or comparative operating cost for Ubuntu and Debian. For StreamNeo’s continuously looping prerecorded-video use case, the monthly price is $9.99 per month; that is a service option, not a substitute for an encoder sending a live camera feed.
