If the PC has already restarted, OBS can be launched with its --startstreaming option—but that is a recovery aid to test, not a guarantee that YouTube will resume the intended broadcast unattended. Check the event and its live status in YouTube Live Control Room.
Prevent update restarts during the service
Preventing an update restart and recovering after one are separate tasks. First reduce the chance Windows restarts during setup or worship; then prepare a tested recovery path in case the PC reboots anyway.
- Set active hours. Open Windows Update settings and set active hours to cover the service and volunteer setup window. Microsoft explains that Windows may need to restart to finish updates and provides active-hour and restart-scheduling controls: Windows Update: FAQ.
- Schedule a pending restart. If Windows has already queued one, use the restart scheduling control to choose a time after the service. Do not rely on pausing updates as a permanent fix: Microsoft describes pausing as temporary, and updates cannot be stopped entirely.
- Keep a person ready to verify the broadcast. Update controls reduce the risk of an interruption; they do not ensure the PC will never restart or that a broadcast will recover without attention.
Prepare OBS to launch after a reboot
OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter can start streaming when OBS opens. It does not, by itself, prove that OBS will select the correct YouTube event or that the broadcast will return to the same state after a reboot.
- Make a dedicated OBS shortcut. Follow the OBS Project’s Launch Parameters instructions for adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut. Add
--startstreamingto the shortcut’s Target after the executable path, preserving the existing quotation marks and separating the parameter with a space. - For a scheduled launch, set the working directory. OBS’s instructions say automated or scheduled launches also need the OBS program folder as the shortcut’s “Start in” location or the scheduled task’s working directory. Do not assume a launch command that works from a desktop shortcut will work unchanged from every automation method.
- Confirm the production configuration. If the church uses multiple OBS profiles, scene collections, or scenes, make sure the launch method selects the intended configuration. OBS documents launch options for selecting profiles, collections, and scenes as well as starting a stream.
- Test under supervision. Test the complete setup before relying on it for a service. A successful OBS launch is not proof that YouTube is showing the right event or that viewers can hear and see it.
Check YouTube’s broadcast settings before service
In YouTube Studio, identify the scheduled broadcast the church intends to use and check its auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube’s live stream settings help explains stream keys and broadcast settings. Treat the stream key like a credential: it directs an encoder’s feed to the channel, so keep it private.

Set up and test the encoder stream ahead of the event. YouTube recommends checking the preview before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its streaming tips explain preparation and stream health; live stream metrics describes the status information and error messages available in Live Control Room.
What to do after an unexpected restart
- Sign in and let the connection return. Wait for the PC’s network connection to come back before treating an initial OBS connection failure as a bad stream key. The official guidance does not specify a guaranteed waiting interval.
- Open OBS using the tested launch method. Check that the expected profile, scene collection, scene, and YouTube broadcast are selected, especially if the church has more than one production setup.
- Inspect the intended event in Live Control Room. Confirm its preview, status, and any displayed error message. A running OBS window alone does not establish that the intended broadcast is live.
- Verify the viewer experience. Confirm that a viewer can access the broadcast and that picture and sound are correct. If OBS is open but disconnecting or dropping frames, diagnose the connection instead of assuming Windows restarted again.
Separate OBS reconnect from OBS startup
OBS’s automatic reconnect setting addresses a stream connection that drops while OBS remains open. A full Windows reboot closes OBS; reconnect behavior cannot launch the program after that reboot. OBS documents reconnect under Advanced settings in its OBS Studio Overview Guide, while its launch-parameter documentation covers --startstreaming. These are different recovery mechanisms.

Troubleshoot the failure you actually have

Choose prevention or recovery based on the church’s setup

The official documentation does not provide a reliability percentage for either approach or promise that every scheduled broadcast will continue after a PC restart. Results can depend on OBS version and launch method, network readiness, broadcast configuration, and channel settings.
