Then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key, test the full path, and monitor stream health. A looping playlist does not protect against computer, power, network, or ingest failures.
Set up the OBS VLC Video Source
1. Install a compatible VLC
Install VLC before adding the source. OBS’s VLC Video Source is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If “VLC Video” is missing from the Sources add menu, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
2. Add the playlist to your scene
- Open the OBS scene that will carry the church stream.
- In Sources, choose the add control and select VLC Video.
- Add the media files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended order.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that the video fits the canvas as intended.
VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can play a playlist. OBS’s separate Media Source is intended for a single file, so use VLC Video when the source itself needs a playlist.
3. Choose looping and order
Enable Loop Playlist to restart the source after it reaches the end of its media files. OBS documents this setting as on by default. Shuffle is separate and documented as off by default. Leave shuffle off for a planned sequence such as a service, prayer schedule, or set of documentary clips; enable it only if randomized playback is actually desired.

4. Decide what happens when the source is hidden
OBS provides visibility behavior choices that stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playback running when a source is not visible. The appropriate behavior depends on the church’s scene transitions:
- Stop when not visible and restart when visible: use when playback should start over after the source has been hidden.
- Pause when not visible and resume when visible: use when the playlist should continue from its previous position after a temporary scene change.
- Always play even when not visible: use when the playlist should keep advancing in the background.
With multiple scenes, test a scene switch and return before relying on a setting. A hidden source may otherwise stop, pause, or continue in a way that changes the program order.

5. Verify the audio track
The VLC source has an Audio Track setting; OBS documents track 1 as the default. Check the selected track, then confirm the expected audio appears in the OBS audio mixer. Also listen in YouTube’s incoming preview: a visible video does not prove its audio is present or at a suitable level.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
- In OBS’s stream settings, select the appropriate YouTube connection method and enter the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that stream.
- Start the OBS encoder and wait for the incoming preview and stream-health information in YouTube.
- Before directing viewers to the stream, check the watch page on a second device and confirm that the correct scene, picture, and audio are present.
YouTube’s encoder guidance covers entering the server URL and stream key and recommends monitoring stream health during the event. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current settings corresponding to your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Choose output settings your connection can sustain
For YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS encoder recommendations, H.264 is supported, bitrate encoding should use CBR, and the keyframe interval is recommended at two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. The suitable bitrate depends on the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every output. Use YouTube’s current encoder table rather than applying a number from a different resolution or frame rate.
YouTube recommends testing the upload connection and leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate. That margin helps accommodate normal variation; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Choose a quality the church’s actual upload connection can reliably sustain. Test before treating the stream as ready
Run a test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, rather than checking only a static image. During the test:
- Confirm the intended VLC playlist is visible and playing in the correct order.
- Listen for the correct audio track, clean levels, and continuity between files.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream-health messages.
- Open the watch page on a separate device to verify the viewer-facing result.
- If the stream uses scene changes, hide and reveal the VLC source to verify its configured visibility behavior.
These checks follow YouTube’s general guidance to test representative content and monitor stream health; the result will depend on the church’s equipment and network.

Plan for continuity and archives
A playlist loop is not a failover system
Loop Playlist repeats the local media list; it does not keep the computer powered, restart OBS after a crash, repair an internet connection, or ensure YouTube ingest remains healthy. Long-running reliability depends on the entire chain: playback computer and OBS, power, upload connection, encoder settings, and YouTube’s receiving side.
Do not rely on YouTube alone for a nonstop archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the church needs a complete record, create a separate local recording plan and confirm there is enough storage and that recordings are being created. Details are in YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Check rights for every item in the playlist
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. Check permissions for each recorded song, video, and other item, considering the relevant material and territory. The licenses required depend on the church’s specific content and circumstances; this guide does not determine those legal obligations. See YouTube’s Terms of Service.
Troubleshoot common problems
