Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a steady livestream, estimate monthly transfer by multiplying the encoder’s configured bitrate in Mbps by 324 for a 30-day, 24/7 month. At 6 Mbps, that is about 1,944 decimal GB, or 1.944 decimal TB. This is the stream’s estimated outbound data, not a promise about your Linode allowance or bill.
Calculate transfer from the configured bitrate
Bitrate is a rate; bandwidth allowance in this context is the volume of data transferred over a billing period. For a steady stream, these decimal-unit conversions provide a planning estimate:
- Decimal GB per hour: bitrate in Mbps × 0.45
- Decimal GB for 30 days of continuous streaming: bitrate in Mbps × 324
- Decimal TB for 30 days of continuous streaming: bitrate in Mbps × 0.324
The conversion uses 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second, 3,600 seconds per hour, and 8 bits per byte. Decimal GB and TB use powers of 1,000; dashboards that display binary GiB or TiB will show different values.
Example: 6 Mbps, all day for 30 days
At a steady configured bitrate of 6 Mbps, the estimate is 6 × 0.45 = 2.7 decimal GB per hour. Over 720 hours, it is 6 × 324 = 1,944 decimal GB, or 1.944 decimal TB. This is calculated from bitrate and duration, not measured traffic or an invoice prediction.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use actual hours for a partial month
For a stream that runs fewer than 720 hours, calculate bitrate × 0.45 × scheduled hours to estimate decimal GB. For example, a 6 Mbps stream running 12 hours a day for 30 days has 360 scheduled hours: 6 × 0.45 × 360 = 972 decimal GB. Use the hours in your actual billing period rather than assuming every month has 30 days.
Choose the bitrate input carefully
Use the encoder’s configured bitrate for the feed sent from Linode to YouTube. YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are configuration guidance, not a measurement of the stream’s average traffic. Its current guidance recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p/30 fps. It also lists AV1 and H.265 ranges, so confirm the codec before using a recommended value. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

The transfer estimates in this table are arithmetic at the listed bitrate over the stated duration; they are not YouTube traffic measurements or Linode quotas. If the configured bitrate differs from YouTube’s recommendation, substitute the configured value.
Do not confuse connection headroom with monthly transfer
YouTube recommends leaving room in available upload capacity—“20% recommended”—for stability. That is guidance for line capacity, not a multiplier to add to the Linode transfer calculation. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS setup recommends CBR encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS. Check its current encoder settings guidance before configuring a feed.

Account for the feeds and traffic that count
A single stream sent from a Linode to YouTube is outbound traffic from the instance. If that Linode only encodes and uplinks the stream, audience playback is served by YouTube rather than sent from the Linode. If you also serve video to viewers from your own server, that is a separate traffic pattern and is not included in this livestream estimate.
- Independent backup feed: calculate its bitrate and hours separately, then add its volume. Do this when the backup is transmitted as a second feed, not merely because you have a backup file.
- Other services in the account: add their metered public outbound transfer when comparing against the pool.
- Inbound and private traffic: Linode staff have described inbound traffic as free and private-network traffic as excluded from the transfer pool; confirm current terms for your account.
Linode staff describe plan transfer allowances as contributing to a monthly account pool shared among services. Transfer may be prorated when services are created or deleted partway through a month. See the Linode community explanation of pooled transfer and verify the current pool in Cloud Manager.

Compare the estimate with Linode’s current allowance
- Estimate the stream: multiply its configured Mbps by 0.45 and by scheduled hours to get decimal GB.
- Add independent feeds: estimate any separately transmitted backup feed in the same way and add it.
- Include other pooled usage: account for public outbound traffic from the other services that share the pool.
- Check the account’s current pool: use Cloud Manager and the current provider billing documentation for the plan, billing period, and data-center region.
- Check any possible overage rate: only after comparing total estimated usage with the available allowance. Rates can vary by region; a historical example or community-reported rate is not a current quote. Linode community guidance discusses metered outbound traffic and region-specific rates at Linode’s community site.
The calculation estimates one stream’s traffic; it cannot establish an account-specific charge. Your actual allowance and any applicable overage depend on current account, plan, region, and billing-period terms.

The arithmetic assumes the configured bitrate remains steady and does not add protocol or operational overhead. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event. Live Control Room reports stream status and errors; insufficient available bandwidth or mismatched settings can cause ingest or quality problems.
