There is no single Hetzner location proven to give every YouTube stream the lowest latency. Choose by measuring the actual route from your broadcaster or relay server to YouTube Live ingest, then account for audience geography, stream resolution and YouTube’s latency mode. A server’s location alone cannot determine end-to-end viewer delay.
What “low latency” means for a YouTube stream
There are two different delays to consider. Source-to-ingest delay is the time and reliability of the network path carrying your encoded stream from the broadcaster or relay to YouTube. Viewer latency is the delay from capture to playback, including YouTube’s processing and the player’s buffer. A faster route to ingest can help the contribution path, but it does not by itself set the time viewers see the stream.
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between a camera capturing an event and its display to viewers. It also warns that reducing read-ahead buffer increases the chance viewers experience issues between encoder and player. A sustainable average bitrate does not rule out delays caused by network congestion. YouTube: Understand live streaming latency
Hetzner locations to consider
Hetzner lists six Cloud locations across four network zones. The location is not the same thing as the network zone; for example, three locations share the eu-central zone.

Hetzner says Cloud instances may occasionally be unavailable in a location. Prices are the same within eu-central, while us-east, us-west and ap-southeast have different prices. Traffic between network zones is billed as normal internet traffic. Check current availability and applicable pricing on Hetzner’s location and Cloud information. The API documentation distinguishes availability zones from network zones and describes very-low-latency connections between datacenters at a location; that does not establish latency from a location to YouTube ingest. How to choose the location for your workflow
1. Identify where the stream actually originates
If a Hetzner server runs the encoder or relay and sends directly to YouTube, test from that server. If a computer or production site sends the stream to a relay first, the route from that real source to the relay also matters. A region that is convenient for viewers may still be a poor or unstable source-to-ingest path.

2. Benchmark the real ingest route
Test candidate regions using the same stream protocol, YouTube ingest destination and encoding configuration you plan to use in production. Compare round-trip latency where measurable, packet loss, reconnect behavior and sustained upload stability over representative periods, not just a brief ping. Run the test from each candidate region—or from the actual broadcaster network if that is the source—and repeat at different times if your audience or production schedule spans busy periods. No comparative Hetzner-to-YouTube ingest measurements are established by the cited official sources, so the result must come from your own workflow.
3. Include audience and production geography
For one broadcaster, the broadcaster-to-ingest path is usually the more direct location decision than the audience’s map. If a team streams from several countries or you are designing a multi-region relay, measure each source-to-relay and relay-to-ingest route and include the added operational complexity and cross-zone traffic cost. YouTube’s distribution can involve geographically distributed edge servers rather than serving every viewer directly from the origin; Hetzner’s CDN explanation describes that general model, not a guarantee about YouTube’s internal live routing. 4. Choose the YouTube latency mode for the programme
Location testing cannot compensate for a latency mode that does not fit the event. YouTube recommends:
- Normal latency: for non-interactive streams.
- Low latency: for limited interaction; YouTube says most viewers experience latency of less than 10 seconds.
- Ultra-low latency: for highly interactive, real-time engagement; YouTube says most viewers experience latency of less than five seconds.
The stated times describe typical outcomes, not a promise for a particular Hetzner region. Low and Ultra-low latency modes do not support 4K. If you need 4K, account for that restriction when selecting a mode; the lowest-latency mode is not automatically the right trade-off for a documentary premiere or other largely non-interactive programme.

A practical decision rule
- Start with the region that offers a stable, measured route from your actual source or relay to YouTube ingest.
- Use packet loss and sustained upload reliability alongside latency; a slightly longer but stable route may be preferable to a faster path that drops packets or reconnects.
- Use audience geography as context, not proof that a nearby Hetzner server will reduce every viewer’s playback delay.
- Compare region-specific price, availability and cross-zone traffic implications before choosing a multi-region design.
- Re-test if the source network, ingest destination, relay architecture or YouTube latency mode changes.
