If YouTube rejects a stream key from a Hetzner server, first replace the encoder’s saved key with the current key for the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Then check the stream URL and protocol, encoder support, and the server’s outbound firewall rules. A key error, an RTMPS/TLS failure, and a blocked network connection can look similar, so identify which stage is failing before changing firewall settings.
Identify where the connection is failing
The word “authentication” does not by itself prove the key is wrong. Start the encoder with the correct URL and key, then check whether the feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room. If it does not appear, investigate the key, URL, protocol, encoder, DNS/reachability, and outbound filtering. If it appears in preview but cannot be started or made available, check stream and channel readiness.

These are diagnostic branches, not a guarantee that every encoder uses the same error wording. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends refreshing the stream key for third-party encoder startup errors.
Replace and protect the stream key
Copy the key for the intended stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live, then the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream key associated with the stream configuration you intend to use.
- In the encoder running on Hetzner, replace the saved value in its stream-key field. Keep the stream key separate from the server URL; they are distinct inputs.
- Start the encoder again and check Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or support posts. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and troubleshooting steps.

Verify the stream URL and RTMP/RTMPS settings
Keep the URL and key matched
Use the Stream URL shown for the same stream configuration as the key. Put the URL in the encoder’s server or ingest-URL field and the key in its key field. A correct key paired with the wrong URL can still fail.
Use RTMPS only when the encoder supports it
If the workflow calls for RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the default RTMP URL is interchangeable. YouTube describes RTMPS as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that provides encryption. If YouTube reports an invalid SSL certificate, its guidance suggests adding port 443 to the URL or configuring port 443 in the encoder. If the connection times out, verify that the encoder version supports RTMPS. Follow the URL and protocol shown for your stream; port 443 is not a universal fix for every connection error. Check Hetzner firewall egress and return traffic
Hetzner Cloud Firewall
Check which Cloud Firewall is applied to the server and whether it has custom outbound rules. Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall FAQ says: “If you don’t define any rules for the outbound direction, all traffic is allowed.” That applies to its Cloud Firewall, not automatically to the server’s operating-system firewall or other Hetzner firewall products. When custom outbound rules exist, unmatched new traffic is dropped; established and related return traffic is allowed because the Cloud Firewall is stateful. Permit the outbound connection required by the current YouTube ingest URL, and inspect local firewall policy as well. See Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall FAQ.
Hetzner dedicated-server firewall
Do not apply Cloud Firewall assumptions to a dedicated server. Hetzner documents its dedicated-server firewall as stateless. If outbound filtering is enabled, response packets in the opposite direction may also need explicit rules. Its documentation illustrates TCP ACK and ephemeral-port rules, but the correct rules depend on your configuration; inspect the effective ruleset rather than copying an example blindly. Do not start by opening inbound RTMP ports
The encoder initiates a connection from the server to YouTube. The relevant server-side checks are outbound permission and, where the firewall is stateless, the response path. Do not guess a fixed YouTube destination IP or assume an inbound port opening will repair an outbound connection. Use the current URL and port supplied for the stream.
Use preview and channel checks to locate the boundary
- Enter the verified URL and key in the encoder, then start it.
- Check Live Control Room for the incoming stream preview before going live. YouTube’s encoder instructions advise waiting for the preview.
- If there is no preview, return to the credentials, URL/protocol, encoder support, DNS/reachability, and firewall egress checks.
- If the feed reaches YouTube but the event cannot be started, verify channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Update the encoder and read its diagnostics
YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Check the encoder’s own logs for whether it reports key rejection, a timeout, or a TLS/certificate problem; these point to different parts of the connection path. If the feed reaches YouTube but stream health is poor, check encoder status and the server’s outbound internet connection as well. Avoid changing firewall policy solely because an error mentions a stream key when the encoder may instead be failing to connect. YouTube’s troubleshooting page covers encoder and connection checks.
