Closing Remote Desktop does not guarantee that an OBS stream will keep showing the right picture and sound. The answer depends on whether OBS itself stops or whether its desktop/window capture loses the interactive display session. Test your exact setup by disconnecting without signing out, then check the actual YouTube output from another device. If your video relies on the RDP desktop, you may need a different capture or session architecture; OBS’s startup options alone cannot make that capture persist.
First identify what “closing Remote Desktop” means
Remote Desktop’s close button, an explicit disconnect, signing out, and restarting the server are different actions and can leave different session states. If you want a process to continue, do not sign out as a troubleshooting shortcut. Begin by noting exactly what you do to close the client and what happens afterward.
- OBS stops or YouTube goes offline: investigate whether OBS is still running, the Windows session or policy, and the stream connection.
- OBS’s timer continues but the picture freezes, turns black, or changes: investigate the source and display path. Desktop, browser-window, and window captures may depend on the interactive desktop.
- Picture and audio remain correct but frames drop: investigate network stability and bitrate rather than treating it as an RDP capture failure.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes capture sources and audio-device selection and recommends testing for a few minutes. For this problem, check the video and audio arriving at YouTube, not just OBS’s local preview or stream timer.
Run a safe test on the actual Hetzner server
- Record your setup. Note whether this is a Hetzner cloud VM or dedicated physical server, the Windows version, the OBS sources in use, and whether the picture comes from display/window capture or a direct media source.
- Use a private or unlisted test stream, or another safe test destination. Start OBS with the intended scene and audio. Watch the output from a separate device so the RDP client is not the only view.
- Close the RDP client without signing out. Wait briefly, then inspect the remote output on the separate device. Check both picture and audio; OBS may remain connected while a captured desktop has stopped updating.
- Reconnect and compare. Record whether OBS exited, the stream disconnected, only the capture froze, or the output remained correct. Repeat only as needed to distinguish a repeatable result from a one-off network interruption.
This test matters because the available Hetzner documentation does not give a specific OBS recipe or promise that its provider console preserves a Windows graphical session.

Fix the failure that the test actually shows
If OBS exits or stops streaming
Check whether the application is still running after the RDP action and whether a Windows session policy, user sign-out, restart, or automation problem is ending it. OBS’s Launch Parameters can start OBS in a selected configuration. On Windows, when using a scheduled task or other automation, OBS’s guide calls out setting the task’s “Start in…” folder to the one containing obs64.exe.

Configure and test the profile and scene interactively first; then verify that the automated launch uses the intended configuration and stream destination. Do not assume that successful startup proves a desktop capture will keep working after disconnect.
If OBS stays live but the image freezes or changes
Identify the exact source that stops updating. A browser, display, or window capture can depend on the interactive desktop and its display path; a media source or other direct input has different dependencies. Test that source across the RDP disconnect before redesigning the server.

An OBS forum discussion includes a user report of browser-window capture freezing after RDP disconnect, with a reply attributing it to the RDP virtual GPU and suggesting mirroring on a physical-GPU machine. That is community experience, not a universal Windows rule or a guarantee for a Hetzner VM. A physical server and a cloud VM may not offer the same display or GPU path. Do not assume that switching to Hetzner’s VNC console, or installing a remote-control tool, will preserve the OBS capture; verify the behavior on the deployed system.
If video is intact but frames drop or YouTube disconnects
That is a different problem from a frozen capture. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says dropped frames point to an unstable connection between the computer and ingest server or an inability to sustain the bitrate; excessive drops can disconnect the stream. Check the connection and whether the configured bitrate can be sustained. Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance rather than changing capture sources solely because frames are dropping.

Choose remote access and automation only after checking the host
Hetzner’s documentation describes different Windows paths, so confirm what you actually have before applying platform-specific advice:
- Hetzner’s Windows Server 2025 documentation covers its dedicated-server Windows add-on and RDP access.
- Hetzner’s Windows-on-Cloud guide covers licensing and architecture constraints for customer-installed Windows; eligibility and available configurations depend on the current account and product offering. The guide says Windows Server is not supported on its Arm64 CAX servers.
Hetzner’s Cloud Console VNC instructions describe provider console access, while its FAQ characterizes the console as intended for emergencies and recommends SSH for routine management. Neither establishes that the console keeps an OBS Windows desktop session alive. Check the actual machine type, display/GPU availability, and capture behavior rather than treating the provider console as a persistence fix.

OBS WebSocket can be useful for external control: it has been built into OBS Studio since version 28. OBS’s Remote Control Guide recommends enabling authentication and setting a password. WebSocket controls OBS; it does not preserve a Windows display source by itself.
If your content is already a media file or can be generated without desktop capture, a direct media pipeline may avoid dependence on an interactive desktop. Validate that it supports your actual source, overlays, audio, and YouTube ingest workflow before switching. Hetzner’s Owncast guide describes a separate Owncast destination receiving OBS or other RTMP sources; it is not evidence of a direct YouTube solution.

Copyright and YouTube readiness
Before leaving any stream unattended, confirm you have the rights to the video, music, and other material in the broadcast, and test the intended stream privately or unlisted where appropriate. A working OBS process or cloud loop does not establish that content is cleared for YouTube. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream requirements for your channel and content; the reviewed sources here do not establish a specific rule or outcome for an individual stream.
