How to Connect AWS Elemental MediaPackage to a YouTube Live Ingest Endpoint

MediaPackage serves packaged playback; an encoder such as MediaLive pushes HLS to YouTube. Here’s how to configure the AWS-to-YouTube route and where MediaPackage fits.

You generally do not connect MediaPackage directly to a YouTube Live ingest endpoint. MediaPackage packages and serves streams for playback; YouTube’s HLS ingest expects an encoder to push playlists and media segments to YouTube. For an AWS publishing workflow, configure AWS Elemental MediaLive to send HLS output to YouTube. Use MediaPackage separately if you also need AWS-originated playback for viewers.

What each service does in this workflow

AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 is a just-in-time packaging and origin service. In its documented live flow, an upstream encoder sends it HLS input, and MediaPackage serves configured outputs over HTTPS to requesting devices. Its supported inputs include HLS and CMAF; its output options include HLS and DASH. See AWS’s MediaPackage live processing flow and supported inputs and outputs.

YouTube HLS ingest has the opposite direction: an encoder sends media playlists and segments to YouTube’s HTTPS endpoint using PUT or POST requests. The official sources reviewed do not document a MediaPackage origin endpoint as a direct YouTube push destination. Do not enter YouTube’s ingest URL as though it were a MediaPackage destination; configure an encoder or another explicitly verified relay to perform the push. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Choose the architecture for your goal

Goal Publishing path What MediaPackage does
Publish a live feed on YouTube An HLS-capable encoder, such as MediaLive, pushes to the YouTube HLS ingest URL. Not the documented YouTube push destination.
Serve playback from AWS An upstream encoder sends input to MediaPackage; viewers request playback from its configured endpoints. Packages and serves the AWS playback output.
Publish to YouTube and serve AWS playback Configure the publishing output to YouTube and a separate MediaPackage input/output path for AWS playback, using a suitable encoder architecture. Provides the AWS-originated playback path; it does not replace the encoder’s YouTube push.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture describes MediaLive for transcoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery. These roles help distinguish sending a program to YouTube from serving playback to viewers through AWS.

Send an AWS MediaLive HLS output to YouTube

The AWS-published route uses a MediaLive HLS output group pointed at YouTube’s HLS ingest endpoint. AWS’s example is a 4K HDR workflow and dates to 14 April 2021, so treat its console labels and preset details as an example, not a current universal preset. Check the current MediaLive and YouTube screens before applying it. The example uses HLS Basic PUT and a two-second segment length; YouTube permits segments from one to four seconds, so two seconds is an example value within that range, not a requirement. The walkthrough is AWS’s MediaLive-to-YouTube HLS example.

  1. Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or choose the event/stream and select HLS as the protocol when setting up an HLS stream. Copy the generated primary HTTPS ingest URL and, if provided, the optional backup URL. YouTube generates the endpoints for the selected stream; do not use an example URL as a universal endpoint or expose your private stream key. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions and the LiveStreams API reference.
  2. Configure the MediaLive output group. In the MediaLive channel configuration, add an HLS output group and set its destination to the YouTube HLS URL and stream-specific key as required by the current YouTube and MediaLive interface. AWS’s example uses HLS Basic PUT. Use the exact endpoint generated for your stream; if configuring a backup destination, use the separate backup URL YouTube supplies.
  3. Match the output to YouTube’s current HLS requirements. Choose the media format, codecs, GOP structure, segmenting, playlist behavior, and delivery method described below. Do not copy the example’s 4K HDR settings unless they suit the actual production and meet the applicable codec and color requirements.
  4. Start the encoder and verify the event. Start the MediaLive channel, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream status. Confirm that the correct event is receiving the feed before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

Match YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements

Use YouTube’s current stream-specific settings and documentation as the authority. Its HLS workflow requires the encoder to push over HTTPS with PUT or POST. The published technical constraints include:

  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
  • Container and delivery: muxed M2TS transport-stream media, with TS segments; byte-range delivery is unsupported.
  • Playlist: a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
  • Segment duration: one to four seconds. AWS’s two-second example falls within this range.
  • Video: H.264 or HEVC, closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. HDR requires HEVC and additional color requirements; verify those in YouTube’s current technical guide rather than assuming any HEVC output is HDR-ready.
  • Audio: AAC in a single track.

These requirements are described in Google’s HLS ingest guide and YouTube’s setup help. YouTube states that HLS has higher latency than RTMP, and ultra-low-latency mode is off when HLS is selected. If minimizing delay matters more than using HLS, assess the available protocol options for the specific stream in Live Control Room.

Use MediaPackage for AWS playback separately

If viewers also need playback from AWS, configure MediaPackage as an origin path rather than treating it as YouTube’s ingest target. MediaPackage v2 accepts HLS or CMAF input over HTTPS; sources outside the AWS account require a channel policy, and incoming media segments must not be encrypted. You can configure MediaPackage endpoints for supported playback formats. Confirm the precise input, output, policy, and regional availability for the AWS account and region you use in the MediaPackage documentation.

In a combined design, the encoder or an explicitly configured distribution architecture must serve both destinations as needed: one output path pushes to YouTube, while a separate input path feeds MediaPackage for AWS playback. The exact topology depends on encoder capabilities and the production’s delivery requirements; the cited AWS sources do not establish a direct YouTube pull from a MediaPackage endpoint.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube never receives the stream: Check that MediaLive is configured as an HLS encoder output directed to the generated YouTube endpoint, not to a MediaPackage playback URL. Recheck the selected event, primary/backup address, and stream key.
  • YouTube reports an unsupported format: Verify muxed M2TS/TS, H.264 or HEVC video, single-track AAC audio, closed GOP, and a segment duration within one to four seconds. Also ensure the output does not use byte-range delivery.
  • The stream starts but stalls or falls behind: Inspect whether the playlist is rolling and has at most five outstanding segments, and confirm HTTPS PUT/POST delivery. HLS has higher latency than RTMP in YouTube’s guidance, so some delay is expected compared with lower-latency options.
  • The AWS example does not match the console: The cited MediaLive blog post is dated 14 April 2021. Use it for the architecture and example settings, but follow current AWS console labels and current YouTube stream requirements.
  • MediaPackage rejects incoming media: Check whether the source is HLS or CMAF over HTTPS, whether the channel policy permits an external source when applicable, and whether the incoming segments are unencrypted.
  • A playback endpoint works but YouTube is blank: A MediaPackage endpoint serves viewer playback; it is not evidence that YouTube has received an encoder push. Check the separate MediaLive-to-YouTube output path.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream rather than build and operate an AWS encoder pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; it runs at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial signup.
