No—not as a way to control DVR on YouTube. AWS Elemental MediaPackage can provide time-shifted playback from its own endpoint, but YouTube Live DVR is a separate setting for viewers watching the YouTube stream. Enable YouTube DVR in YouTube Studio; configure MediaPackage time shifting on the relevant MediaPackage endpoint.
Two different DVR experiences
The key distinction is where viewers watch the stream. MediaPackage’s time-shifted viewing applies to playback delivered from a MediaPackage endpoint. YouTube Live DVR applies to viewers on YouTube. The services’ documented features do not establish MediaPackage as a YouTube DVR backend or playback origin.
| Feature | Where the viewer watches | Who controls it | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| MediaPackage time-shifted viewing | A MediaPackage endpoint’s playback | AWS Elemental MediaPackage endpoint configuration | Allows time-shifted playback within the configured and documented limits. |
| YouTube Live DVR | The YouTube live stream | YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room | Lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream, subject to YouTube’s limitations. |
AWS describes MediaPackage as receiving live content from an upstream encoder, retaining received content for a limited period for features such as time-shifted viewing, and dynamically packaging it for downstream players or CDN requests. MediaPackage v2 documents HLS and CMAF as live input types from external sources or encoders over HTTPS. YouTube’s setup documentation instead describes configuring an encoder to send its feed to YouTube. These roles do not, by themselves, create a connection between MediaPackage’s time-shift window and YouTube’s rewind history.
How to enable DVR for viewers on YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Enable the DVR option for that YouTube live stream. This is the setting that governs pause and rewind on YouTube.
- Configure your encoder’s YouTube ingest destination separately. YouTube generally recommends RTMPS and also documents HLS ingest with YouTube-specific URL and settings; follow the instructions for the ingest protocol you choose.
- Check the stream from its YouTube watch page. MediaPackage endpoint settings do not substitute for YouTube’s DVR setting.
YouTube Help says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream, but warns that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream went live. That caveat matters for always-on streams: do not assume viewers will have an uninterrupted rewind window on a stream running beyond 12 hours.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How MediaPackage time shifting works instead
If viewers will watch a MediaPackage-delivered feed, configure time shifting on the relevant MediaPackage endpoint and use its time-shifted manifest options. AWS’s current MediaPackage v2 user guide, checked October 3, 2026, states that supported content may be up to 336 hours (14 days) old. That is a content-age limit—not a 14-day rewind session. The documented maximum endpoint startover window is 24 hours, and the maximum time-shifted manifest length is also 24 hours.
In the legacy MediaPackage guide, requests for content within the endpoint’s configured startover window can use start and end parameters; requests outside that window return HTTP 404. AWS also recommends consistent playback windows across player sessions rather than unique start and end values for each viewer, to improve CDN caching and avoid potential throttling.

Which configuration should you choose?
- Viewers watch on YouTube: Enable DVR in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. MediaPackage time shifting does not set YouTube’s DVR behavior.
- Viewers watch a MediaPackage endpoint: Configure that endpoint’s startover window and use the time-shifted manifest options. The MediaPackage limits apply to that playback path.
- You need both destinations: Treat them as separate playback experiences and configure each service for its own viewers. A custom relay or multi-destination encoder architecture may be designed separately, but the cited official documentation does not establish that a MediaPackage window becomes YouTube DVR history.
Keep a YouTube stream running without a home computer
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is separate from MediaPackage and does not change YouTube’s DVR controls.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
