To estimate AWS Elemental MediaPackage costs for a YouTube Live workflow, calculate the data ingested and the content originated by MediaPackage, price those volumes at the current rate for your AWS Region and MediaPackage generation, then convert the USD estimate using the exchange rate AWS applies to your invoice. A MediaPackage estimate is only one part of a full workflow bill: encoding, CDN delivery, transfer charges and applicable taxes may add separate costs.
First confirm whether MediaPackage is in your YouTube Live workflow
Do not assume that MediaPackage is required, or that a MediaPackage endpoint connects directly to YouTube ingest. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and describes HLS in a specific HDR-related context; AWS’s documented MediaPackage live flow receives HLS from an upstream encoder. Check the exact encoder, MediaPackage endpoint and YouTube ingest method for the architecture you plan to use. See YouTube’s encoder settings and AWS’s MediaPackage live-flow documentation.
Before calculating, write down the service generation, AWS Region, whether input is single-pipeline or redundant, the rendition bitrates, event duration, expected audience and viewing time, and whether you want MediaPackage alone or the complete pipeline. These choices determine which rates and volumes belong in the estimate.
Use the two MediaPackage volume meters
For live packaging, estimate both the data sent into MediaPackage and the content MediaPackage originates. More input renditions, higher bitrates and additional ingest pipelines raise input volume. Audience viewing and the share not served from CDN cache affect originated volume.

Estimate ingested gigabytes
- Add the bitrates of every rendition sent to MediaPackage. Use the total input bitrate, not just the highest-quality rendition.
- Convert the combined bitrate to gigabytes per hour using a consistent unit convention, then multiply by the event duration in hours.
- Multiply for the actual number of input streams or pipelines MediaPackage receives. Include redundant feeds if they are ingested and metered.
AWS’s pricing-page example uses five renditions totaling 9.5 Mbps and estimates 4.175 GB per hour per stream. That is AWS’s example calculation, not a universal conversion or a quote for every architecture; apply the same convention consistently when estimating your own volume. See AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing.
Estimate originated gigabytes
- Estimate viewer data from the average delivered bitrate, total viewing hours and number of viewers.
- Apply an assumed CDN cache-hit ratio to estimate the share actually originated by MediaPackage. For example, a 99% cache hit means 1% of the relevant viewer data is not served from cache.
- Use observed traffic and cache behavior if available. If not, show the cache ratio as an assumption and calculate more than one scenario rather than treating it as guaranteed.
AWS states that content cached and served from a CDN does not incur MediaPackage v2’s per-GB streamed-out charge. That does not make CDN distribution free: the CDN has its own delivery charges. AWS illustrates different cache assumptions, including 99% in a one-hour, 10,000-viewer deployment example and 97.5% in another pricing example; those are scenario assumptions, not promises for your event. See AWS’s MediaPackage v2 pricing documentation and live-streaming deployment guide.

Price the volumes in USD, then estimate rupees
Use the current rates for the selected Region and MediaPackage generation. AWS’s pricing page examples give $0.030 per GB for live ingest and $0.050 per GB originated in US East (N. Virginia). Those figures describe that Region’s examples; they are not universal rates or INR prices. Check the current pricing for your actual Region and service generation before using the formula.
| Calculation step | Formula or input | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest cost | Ingested GB × current regional ingest rate | All rendition bitrates, duration and number of input pipelines |
| Origination cost | MediaPackage-originated GB × current regional origination rate | Viewer data and the assumed or observed cache-hit ratio |
| MediaPackage USD estimate | Ingest cost + origination cost + any applicable transfer or other MediaPackage charges | Service generation, Region and current pricing |
| Approximate INR estimate | MediaPackage USD estimate × applicable AWS invoice USD-to-INR rate | Your account’s billing terms and invoice conversion rate |
AWS publishes service prices in USD. For eligible AWS India accounts with an India contact and billing address, AWS bills in INR and computes the amounts in USD before converting them for billing. The exact invoice exchange rate and taxes are billing-specific, so a market exchange rate you select yourself can only produce an illustration, not an exact invoice total. Separate MediaPackage from the full workflow bill
A MediaPackage line-item estimate is not an end-to-end YouTube Live budget. If the stream uses them, estimate encoding, CDN delivery, data transfer and other AWS services separately, then add applicable taxes. MediaLive charges depend on configured inputs, outputs and channel characteristics; delivery through CloudFront or another CDN can be a substantial part of a live-event estimate. Do not count cached data as MediaPackage-originated volume, but do include the CDN’s own delivery charges.
- MediaPackage: ingested volume and originated volume, at the applicable rates.
- Encoding: MediaLive or another encoder, if present in the architecture. See AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing.
- Distribution: CloudFront or another CDN and any applicable transfer charges. AWS’s deployment guide shows why distribution can materially affect an event estimate.
- Billing additions: other AWS services and applicable taxes, based on the account and billing circumstances.
If the goal is to budget a recurring or 24/7 broadcast, calculate for the actual operating hours and workload instead of multiplying a short event’s total without checking its audience, cache behavior and input design. Compare short and long durations, lower and higher rendition ladders, single and redundant input where relevant, and lower and higher cache-hit assumptions. Keep the Region and service generation fixed within each comparison.
