For OBS-based YouTube streaming from Amazon EC2, choose the operating system that fits your software and administration workflow—not because Ubuntu or Windows Server is inherently faster. OBS documents Linux/Unix and Windows 10/11 requirements, but its cited requirements do not list Windows Server. Validate the exact Server release, graphics driver, and desktop session before relying on it. YouTube’s encoder settings are largely OS-independent; stream health depends on a compatible encoder and a host and network path that can sustain the chosen settings.
What this comparison covers
This is about running an encoder such as OBS on an EC2 virtual machine and sending its output to YouTube Live. It is not the same as using EC2 to control a local computer that captures a camera, microphone, game, or desktop. For cloud-side encoding, the source media and any production inputs must be accessible to the VM. YouTube’s setup flow has the encoder send a server URL and stream key; typical gear such as a webcam or microphone connects to the encoder, which may instead be your local production computer. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance describes this encoder workflow.
OBS’s cited system-requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland. It does not list Windows Server. OBS also warns that meeting the basic requirements does not ensure a system can stream or record adequately. Graphics drivers and GPU instances
AWS describes GPU-based EC2 instances as useful for graphics applications, including game streaming and 3-D application streaming, and says the appropriate GPU driver must be installed. Its NVIDIA driver documentation covers Tesla, GRID, and gaming driver families, with APIs including NVENC. The suitable driver depends on the instance and use case; this does not establish that every EC2 GPU instance can use hardware encoding with your chosen OS and OBS configuration. What to test before choosing
- Can the exact OBS version and any required plugin run on the selected OS edition?
- Does the instance expose the graphics capability you need, and is its supported driver installed?
- Can OBS access its source media and production inputs from the VM?
- Does the graphical session work reliably for your intended unattended operation?
- Can the encoder sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate during a representative test?
Choose based on those checks. Without a controlled test of a defined instance, driver, encoder, scene, and stream configuration, an OS-wide performance winner is not established.
Set YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube recommends selecting a reliable quality that fits available upload bitrate, testing with representative audio and motion before a live event, and monitoring stream health. Its live-stream guidance says YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and network conditions. The figures below are YouTube’s published ingestion guidance, not a guarantee of EC2 output or a benchmark of either operating system. The page does not state a publication year. Protocol, video, and audio
- Transport: Use RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the stream into and through Google’s servers.
- Video codec: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps is listed.
- Rate control: Use CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 is listed.

These recommendations describe YouTube’s ingest settings. The encoder must be able to produce the selected codec and sustain the chosen bitrate, and the VM’s network path must carry it reliably. Do not treat the recommended rate as a promise that a particular EC2 instance can encode or upload at that setting.
Set up an EC2-to-YouTube test stream
- Prepare the cloud-side source. Make the video, audio, or other source material available to the EC2 instance. If your camera, microphone, or game remains attached to a local computer, that is a different capture-and-encoding workflow from running the full production on EC2.
- Confirm the host stack. Install an OBS version compatible with the chosen OS and verify the graphics driver and desktop session. On Windows Server, confirm compatibility for that precise Server release rather than assuming the Windows 10/11 requirement applies. On Linux, ensure the required X window system or Wayland environment is available.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its server URL and stream key. Keep the key secret: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in OBS, select a supported protocol and codec, then set resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, audio codec, and keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s published bitrate guidance as an initial setting, not a guarantee.
- Start sending and verify. Start the encoder output, check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and adjust quality or bitrate if YouTube reports instability. Test representative motion and audio before a public event.
- Go live in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s documented flow has the encoder send the signal, then uses Live Control Room to take the stream live; the control flow is not specific to Ubuntu or Windows.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before streaming recorded material, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track, image, and other included work. A stream key and a technically healthy signal do not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies for your content and channel before going live. Repeated or reused recordings can also raise policy and monetization questions separate from encoder setup; do not assume that looping a file makes it original or eligible for monetization. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid, not as a substitute for YouTube’s rules or legal advice.

Cost and operational trade-offs
EC2 cost depends on the chosen instance, region, operating-system image and licensing, and how long the instance runs. The available evidence does not provide an apples-to-apples Ubuntu and Windows Server price comparison, so check current AWS prices for the exact instance and region rather than assuming one OS is cheaper by a fixed amount. Include storage, data transfer, and any supporting services in your own estimate. AWS’s live streaming on AWS guidance addresses live video solutions on AWS; it should not be treated as a universal instance-size recommendation for OBS-to-YouTube encoding.
A cloud VM can avoid keeping a local production PC on, but it still needs correct source access, a compatible graphics stack, monitoring, and an operational plan for failures.
