For a YouTube playlist that must run continuously, the closest EC2 alternatives are self-managed virtual machines such as Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean Droplets. Both give you a VM on which you can install and run FFmpeg. Google Cloud Live Stream API is a different kind of service: it accepts a live input and produces HLS or DASH output, rather than serving as a VM where you manage a persistent FFmpeg process. Choose the architecture before choosing the provider
There are two distinct decisions in a playlist-to-YouTube workflow: where FFmpeg runs, and how the resulting live stream is delivered or transformed. DigitalOcean also has an SRS Marketplace listing for a streaming-oriented image built with SRS and FFmpeg; the listing describes restreaming and virtual live streaming features. Its catalog was generated on 13 March 2024 and lists FFmpeg 4.2. Treat that version as dated catalog information, not proof of what a newly deployed image contains today. How to compare the two VMs for your channel
The available provider documentation establishes that these are VM options, but it does not establish a cheapest or best-performing choice for a continuous stream. Compare the exact VM configuration, region, expected runtime, storage needs, and outbound data transfer using each provider’s current pricing and configuration details. Also consider which operating system and deployment workflow you already know. Those practical factors affect setup and maintenance, but the cited material does not quantify them comparatively.

When Google Cloud Live Stream API is a fit
Google Cloud Live Stream API is not another VM to log into and run your playlist script. Its documented input is SRT or RTMP; it transcodes that input to HLS or DASH, with output saved in Cloud Storage. Google defines an encoder as a program used to send input streams, with FFmpeg as one example. In other words, FFmpeg can supply an input stream to a managed pipeline, but you should verify that the planned input and output path satisfies your YouTube delivery requirements before choosing this architecture. For a conventional VM setup, you control the encoder and its outbound stream. For the API approach, the service’s documented job is to transform supported live inputs into HLS or DASH outputs. Choose based on whether you need to operate an encoder process yourself or need that managed processing pipeline; do not treat the two as equivalent hosting products.

Keep YouTube delivery requirements separate from VM choice
A VM provider determines where your process runs; it does not by itself determine the correct YouTube ingest protocol or every encoder setting. YouTube’s DASH guide describes platform-specific requirements for delivering live content via DASH. Check that guide for the DASH workflow you intend to use, rather than borrowing settings from another streaming destination. YouTube’s DASH delivery guide
For example, Amazon IVS’s instructions for recorded-video streaming over RTMPS or SRT recommend a two-second keyframe interval for that IVS setup. - Persistent process: Confirm that your chosen VM setup can run and supervise FFmpeg for the schedule and duration you need. A VM gives you control, but the cited provider pages do not promise that your own process will stay healthy or recover automatically.
- Protocol and output path: Match the encoder’s output to the YouTube workflow you plan to use. If considering Live Stream API, check its documented SRT/RTMP input and HLS/DASH output against your full delivery plan.
- Region and latency: Select a region based on the platform and audience needs, then validate the actual route and behavior. The available sources do not establish a best region or comparative latency.
- Total cost: Include VM runtime, storage, and outbound transfer. There is no current like-for-like cost comparison here, so do not assume one provider is cheapest based on the product category alone.
- Marketplace image maintenance: If using DigitalOcean’s SRS image, confirm the present software versions and maintenance status instead of assuming the catalog’s 2024 FFmpeg listing remains current.
- Rights to the videos: Use video and audio you have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules for your channel and content.
