Pinpoint which part of the stream freezes
Before changing settings, reproduce the transition in a short, non-public test stream or a local recording. Watch the exact moment one playlist item ends and the next begins. A freeze in the source or local output calls for a different fix than a problem appearing only after the stream reaches YouTube.
- Does the video stop in OBS’s preview, or does it continue normally?
- Does a local recording freeze at the same frame and time? Check that the recording file is being written and play the section around the transition.
- Does the preview in YouTube Live Control Room freeze, or only the public viewer player?
- At the transition, does OBS’s dropped-frames indicator rise? Does Live Control Room show a timestamped error?
- Does audio continue while the picture is frozen, or do both stop?

This is a diagnostic framework, not a diagnosis of your setup. YouTube distinguishes reports from one viewer from issues affecting multiple viewers on separate connections; a single report alone does not establish a stream-wide fault (OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting).
Identify the playlist source and its contents
OBS’s built-in Media Source is for one media file. Its VLC Video source can play a playlist and relies on VLC libraries. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear, and a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video also has playlist loop and shuffle options, visibility behavior, and network-caching settings (OBS Media Sources).

Determine whether the playlist items are local video files or online URLs. A local-file transition narrows attention to decoding, file compatibility, source configuration, or OBS/plugin behavior. With online items, URL fetching and network interruptions are additional variables. The freeze alone does not tell you which applies.
Compare against a minimal local playlist
- Create a new scene and a fresh VLC Video source for a controlled test, rather than altering the live scene.
- Add two short, known-good local video files and reproduce the transition without going live.
- If the minimal test works, add the original playlist entries one at a time until the transition problem returns.
- If the minimal test also freezes, record the OBS and VLC versions and architecture, source settings, filters, and an OBS log from a reproduction before trying further changes.
This comparison isolates variables; it does not establish that a particular file, URL, or setting is the cause. Changing VLC’s network-caching value may be useful as a controlled test for an online source, but it is not a proven general cure.

Check plugin versions and filters only when they match your setup
If the playlist uses the separate Media Playlist Source plugin, note both its version and your OBS version. The plugin’s update notes describe a fix for playlists not continuing after a transition and for a repeated or same-path case. They state that its 0.1.0 line requires OBS 31 and that the relevant upstream change was merged since OBS 31 (Media Playlist Source update notes). This makes compatibility worth checking if you use that plugin; it does not show that every transition freeze is the same bug.
If you use VLC Video with OBS’s Video Delay (Async) filter, test without that filter in a safe reproduction. An OBS issue marked confirmed describes a crash when changing tracks with this filter in OBS 27.2.3 (OBS Studio issue 6188). That report is specific to an older version and a particular combination; treat it as a clue only when your setup matches.

If the freeze appears only after OBS sends the stream
When the source preview and local recording look right, inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s health indicator and timestamped messages. YouTube lists ingest errors related to codec or container, bitrate, video settings, and keyframe frequency (YouTube live streaming error messages). Use the current encoder recommendations shown for your resolution and encoder rather than copying a generic bitrate from an unrelated setup. YouTube recommends choosing quality your available connection can sustain, testing before the event with similar movement and audio, and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Use OBS connection symptoms to test the network branch
If OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises or its connection indicator reports trouble at the freeze, check whether your configured bitrate is greater than your connection can sustain reliably. OBS also recommends testing another ingest server when available and investigating VPN, security or network software, and Wi-Fi instability. A wired connection is a useful stability check. Dynamic bitrate may hide some symptoms, but it does not resolve the underlying connection problem (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

Do not treat network changes as the answer when the source visibly freezes inside OBS while connection indicators remain normal. That points back to the source branch.
Compare encoder output with YouTube playback
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output and a local archive before blaming the outbound connection. If the local output itself has poor video or audio, inspect the media and audio/video sources and encoder load; comparing another encoder can help isolate an encoder-specific problem. If encoder output is healthy but the outbound stream is not, test the outbound connection (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).

Record enough detail to get a useful diagnosis
If the problem persists, collect the information that separates the likely causes rather than making several changes at once:
- Operating system and OBS version.
- Source type: Media Source, built-in VLC Video, Media Playlist Source plugin, browser source, or another source.
- VLC version and architecture, if the VLC source is involved.
- Whether playlist items are local files or URLs.
- Filters attached to the source, especially any filter involved in the transition.
- Whether the OBS preview, local recording, Live Control Room preview, or only viewer playback freezes—and whether audio continues.
- An OBS log from a reproduction, along with any timestamped YouTube health messages and the state of OBS’s dropped-frame indicator.
A 2020 OBS forum post describes a user’s VLC source freezing while hosting a YouTube playlist, but that anecdote does not establish a current cause or a fix for other setups (OBS forum: VLC source keeps freezing in OBS). Nothing in that report or the technical guidance reviewed establishes that Telugu-language video causes transition freezes.
