Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room on the second computer to check whether YouTube is receiving the Wirecast stream, then open the YouTube watch page to check the audience-facing picture and sound. These are separate checks: a healthy ingest status does not by itself confirm that playback looks and sounds right to viewers.
Monitor the stream in YouTube Studio
- Prepare the event and test ahead of time. Set up the YouTube event before broadcast and test with audio and video activity similar to the planned program. YouTube also recommends checking that the encoder’s upload bitrate suits the available internet connection. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- Start the Wirecast encoder output. On the Wirecast computer, confirm that the event appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room and check its preview before starting the stream, following YouTube’s event checklist.
- Open the event on the remote computer. Sign in to YouTube Studio, open the event’s Live Control Room, and inspect the stream status or health message and available real-time metrics. If the status area reports an error, read its accompanying instruction. YouTube describes the dashboard and metrics in See your live stream’s metrics — Computer.
- Check the viewer-facing stream. Open the event’s public or unlisted watch page in another tab or browser. YouTube recommends confirming that the event can be reached from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices. Look and listen for the actual picture and sound, rather than relying on the dashboard alone; see YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Keep watching during the broadcast. YouTube advises operators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” Use the Live Control Room for ingest and status clues, and the watch page for the playback viewers receive.

You can monitor YouTube’s output from a browser on another computer; the documented workflow does not require installing Wirecast on that second computer. You will need access to the YouTube account for Studio, or the watch-page URL to check viewer playback.
When to use Remote Desktop Presenter instead
Use Remote Desktop Presenter only if the production team needs to see or bring the Wirecast computer’s desktop into the production—not simply to watch the YouTube stream. Telestream describes its free, cross-platform app as a way to capture screens from other computers on a local area network, and the Wirecast User Guide for Windows, version 16.3 describes broadcasting the desktop of a computer running the presenter software. Telestream’s supported-devices page likewise specifies LAN screen capture. These sources do not establish internet routing or security setup for access beyond that network. Wirecast menus can vary by version; consult the documentation for your installed version rather than relying on an unverified menu path. Telestream’s version history changes over time.
Interpret delay and troubleshoot problems
The remote watch page is behind Wirecast
A delay between the encoder output and remote playback is normal in live streaming and is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. YouTube says most viewers of a low-latency stream experience latency under 10 seconds, while most viewers of an ultra-low-latency stream experience latency under five seconds. Ultra-low latency can increase buffering; normal latency offers the highest viewer quality and lowest buffering when interaction is not needed. See YouTube’s explanation of live-streaming latency.

Live Control Room reports a stream problem
Read the displayed status error and its instruction first. Treat that as an ingest-side clue and investigate the encoder or connection it identifies; the dashboard’s stream-status area is intended to provide specific errors and guidance. See YouTube’s metrics and status guidance.
The dashboard looks healthy, but viewers report bad picture or sound
Check the watch page directly and listen to the program. A healthy ingest indicator does not prove that the audience-facing output is correct. YouTube recommends checking audio and video quality continuously and verifying watch-page accessibility in its live streaming checklist.

The stream is unstable or buffers
Test the encoder’s upload bitrate against the connection and use YouTube’s published encoder recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio before the event; see Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
You suspect the stream key has been exposed
Keep the stream key private. YouTube’s stream settings allow you to reset a compromised key; use the relevant controls in the account rather than sharing the key with a remote viewer. See YouTube’s stream metrics and settings help.
