1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOBS’s “encoding overloaded” warning is not a diagnosis of one failing component. It can reflect GPU rendering pressure, encoding limits, or a wider system bottleneck. Check OBS Stats and the current log first, then reduce competing GPU work or test lower output settings one change at a time. Verify YouTube upload capacity separately: a network problem can interrupt delivery, but it does not by itself explain an OBS encoding warning.
What “encoding overloaded” means during a 4K60 loop
OBS has to compose and encode the output frames even when it is looping prerecorded video. At 4K and 60 frames per second, a loop does not bypass that work. OBS identifies GPU overload and bottlenecks between the GPU and the rest of the system as possible causes of choppy or laggy output and the warning. The word “encoder” therefore does not mean the CPU is necessarily the cause.
Before changing settings, open OBS’s Stats window and review the current OBS log. Determine whether frames are being missed during rendering, skipped during encoding, or both. That distinction helps identify whether to focus first on scene rendering, encoding capacity, or both; without your system details and log, there is no reliable one-setting fix.
Work through reversible fixes first

On Windows, launch OBS as administrator
Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator. OBS says Windows may reserve some GPU capacity for OBS and that this can resolve GPU overload in many cases. This step is for Windows only.

Free competing GPU capacity
Close only applications you recognize and opened that are consuming substantial GPU resources. Check Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS, and reduce other GPU-heavy work. If you are gaming while streaming, OBS also recommends lowering the game’s graphics settings.
-
Simplify the OBS scene
Remove sources you do not need and reduce filters or visual complexity where practical. Compositing a scene uses GPU resources, so a simpler scene or scene collection can leave more capacity for OBS.

Test a lower output resolution, then frame rate
In OBS, open Settings → Video and test a lower output resolution. If 60fps remains unstable, test 30fps. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same representative loop so you can see which change helps.
Lowering the base (canvas) resolution is more disruptive because it can complicate capture and asset positioning. OBS recommends it only when GPU resources are severely constrained.

Review the encoder and hardware support
OBS generally recommends supported hardware encoding to move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. Its documented options include NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to platform and hardware support. See the OBS hardware encoding guide and keep graphics drivers current.
Hardware encoding is not a universal remedy: if rendering already saturates the GPU, freeing GPU capacity or reducing the output workload may matter more than switching encoders.

Set YouTube’s 4K60 Live output appropriately
YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists these ingest bitrate ranges for 2160p (4K) at 60fps. They are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular computer can encode the stream or an internet connection can sustain it.
| Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
YouTube specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. At 4K/2160, the low-latency optimization option is unavailable; YouTube sets streams to normal latency. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current configuration guidance.

Do not confuse these live-stream ingest figures with YouTube’s separate recommended upload bitrates for prerecorded video. Choose a codec your encoder and YouTube setup support, then confirm OBS is actually sending the intended settings.
Separate OBS performance from upload capacity
A stream can encode smoothly and still fail to reach YouTube reliably if upload bandwidth is insufficient. YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% headroom. The actual outbound upload rate can be lower than download speed, and other users or devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the stream.
- Test upload capacity on the network you will use for the stream.
- Compare available upload bandwidth with the total stream bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- If using primary and backup streams, account for both in the bandwidth plan.
- Run a preflight with audio and movement similar to the loop, then monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
These checks diagnose delivery conditions separately from OBS’s rendering and encoding performance. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Use the result of each test to choose the next step
- Rendering misses improve after simplifying scenes or reducing GPU work: continue addressing GPU rendering load before assuming the encoder itself is inadequate.
- Encoding skips improve after switching to a supported hardware encoder: the prior encoding path may have been limiting, but retest the full stream and monitor rendering as well.
- Lower resolution or 30fps stabilizes OBS: the current 4K60 workload exceeds what the system can sustain under its present conditions. Keep the lower setting or investigate measured bottlenecks before considering hardware changes.
- OBS is stable but YouTube reports delivery trouble: focus on upload bandwidth, competing network use, and stream health rather than treating the network symptom as proof of an OBS encoder fault.
Do not buy a GPU, capture card, router, or cooling product based on the warning alone. Check your existing hardware, supported encoders, OBS Stats, and log first. A GPU with an OBS-supported hardware encoder may be relevant only if evidence points to insufficient encoding capability or capacity; no particular model can be recommended without your hardware, workload, and budget.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than diagnosing a local OBS setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
