To test whether DNS is involved, compare the complete server URL in OBS with the current Stream URL in YouTube Live Control Room, then look up that URL’s hostname from the same computer running OBS. A failed lookup means that name is not resolving through the computer’s current resolver at that moment; a successful lookup does not prove YouTube is reachable or explain why the stream is offline.
1. Confirm YouTube’s current stream destination
-
Open the active stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current Stream URL. If you need to locate the encoder setup, YouTube’s encoder instructions describe copying the URL and stream key into the encoder.
-
In OBS, open Settings > Stream and compare the Server field with YouTube’s URL. Check the hostname and protocol, including whether the URL is RTMP or RTMPS. Look for a stale server, typo, missing or incorrect protocol, or a URL copied from a different stream configuration.
-
Do not share your stream key while troubleshooting publicly. YouTube treats it like a password; copy it only into the encoder’s stream-key field when needed.

2. Test the hostname from the OBS computer
Run a DNS lookup for the hostname only—not the full URL, path, or stream key—on the same computer and network where OBS is running. Use your operating system’s DNS lookup utility, and note whether it returns an address and which resolver answered. This is a practical diagnostic, not a YouTube-prescribed command or a test with a fixed expected IP: YouTube’s guidance does not publish a canonical IP address for this scenario.
- If the lookup fails: First verify that you extracted the hostname correctly from YouTube’s current Stream URL. Then investigate the DNS record that changed, the computer’s resolver configuration, and its local or network DNS cache. A failed lookup establishes only that the name did not resolve through that machine’s resolver at the time of the test; it does not identify which setting or provider caused the failure.
- If the lookup succeeds: DNS resolution is working at that moment, but the result does not establish that the stream transport, URL, key, or network connection is correct. Continue with the checks below.
3. Check RTMP versus RTMPS
When RTMPS is the intended configuration, use the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room rather than assuming the default RTMP display is equivalent. YouTube says that for RTMPS timeouts, “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” Check that the URL in OBS matches the current YouTube destination and that your encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.

- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
If OBS reports an SSL error, YouTube’s troubleshooting advice is to verify the URL and, for that condition, try port 443. Treat that as a targeted troubleshooting option—not a general fix for every offline stream. HLS is not a repair for a DNS or RTMP-hostname problem; YouTube documents it for particular needs such as HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP.
4. Verify the key, preview, and connection
-
Confirm that OBS is using the stream key associated with the active YouTube stream. If uncertain, copy the current key from Live Control Room into OBS without revealing it to anyone else.

-
Start a brief test and check whether the expected preview appears in Live Control Room. If OBS sends but no preview appears, recheck the URL and key, then inspect the active stream’s status; the available guidance cannot identify the cause of an individual incident from that symptom alone.
-
If preview appears but the stream is unstable, look beyond DNS. Check upload capacity and connection reliability, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before an event and leaving upload-bandwidth headroom; it warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See its encoder settings and stream-health guidance and streaming tips.

What each result tells you
| Observation | What it establishes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Configured hostname fails DNS lookup | The name did not resolve through this computer’s current resolver at test time. It does not identify the faulty DNS change or setting. | Compare with YouTube’s current Stream URL; inspect the changed record, resolver, and relevant cache. |
| Hostname resolves, but OBS times out | DNS resolution alone has not restored the connection. | Recheck the URL and protocol, RTMPS support, and network reachability. |
| OBS reports an SSL error | TLS/SSL validation is relevant to the connection failure. | Verify the exact RTMPS URL; YouTube suggests trying port 443 for this error. |
| OBS sends, but YouTube shows no expected preview | The symptom alone does not show whether the URL, credential, or ingest state is responsible. | Recopy the current URL and key and inspect the Live Control Room preview. |
| Preview appears, but viewers see an unstable stream | The hostname is not the only possible factor. | Monitor stream health and examine upload capacity and connection stability. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than troubleshoot a camera-based OBS broadcast, StreamNeo runs the looping stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
