If a Wowza stream does not resume on YouTube after reconnecting, check the two connections separately: first the encoder-to-Wowza incoming stream, then Wowza’s stream target to YouTube. An encoder reporting that it reconnected does not confirm that Wowza is sending again or that YouTube is receiving the feed.
1. Check whether Wowza is receiving the encoder
- In Wowza Streaming Engine, open the application’s Incoming Streams view and find the stream. Confirm that its status is Active. The stream detail view can also show uptime and throughput.
- If the stream is missing or inactive, check the encoder’s application name and stream name, server address and port, and any required source username and password. Wowza says RTMP and RTSP-based encoders require source authentication by default; credentials are case-sensitive. The default streaming host port is TCP 1935. See Wowza’s encoder connection instructions.
If the incoming stream is not Active, troubleshoot this input leg before changing the YouTube target. The target cannot send a source stream it is not receiving.
2. Check Wowza’s YouTube stream target
If the incoming stream is Active, inspect the YouTube target in Wowza Streaming Engine. Confirm that the target uses the actual incoming stream as its source and that its destination application corresponds to YouTube’s Stream URL. Recheck the Stream URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio; Wowza sends this target to YouTube over RTMP. Follow the Wowza YouTube stream-target walkthrough.
Interpret the target status
- Waiting: The target is enabled but is not yet pushing. The source may not be connected, or Wowza may still be initializing its destination connection.
- Active: Wowza connected to YouTube and is pushing. This confirms the Wowza-to-YouTube connection is active, but check YouTube’s Live Control Room to verify receipt.
- Error: Wowza could not connect. Recheck the target configuration and whether the configured source is connected; the destination server can also be an issue.
3. Confirm YouTube is receiving the stream
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and look for its preview. Wowza’s troubleshooting guidance uses the preview to verify that YouTube is receiving the stream. Do not treat the encoder’s reconnect message—or Wowza’s target status alone—as proof that the YouTube event is back. See Wowza’s live-stream troubleshooting index.

Use the failing leg to choose your next step
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming stream missing or inactive | Encoder-to-Wowza input | Encoder application and stream names, server and port, and required source credentials. |
| Incoming stream Active; target Waiting | Wowza source assignment or destination connection initialization | Confirm the target’s source is the active incoming stream and allow for destination initialization; no universal recovery wait is established. |
| Incoming stream Active; target Error | Wowza-to-YouTube output | Recheck the YouTube Stream URL and key, target configuration, and source connection. |
| Target Active; no YouTube preview | Receipt at YouTube is not confirmed | Verify the event in YouTube Live Control Room; the available Wowza guidance does not establish what a missing preview means in every case. |
Does Wowza automatically reconnect after an outage?
Wowza documents a MediaCaster streamTimeout setting for monitoring and reconnecting certain offline incoming streams. Its listed protocol scope is native RTP, MPEG-TS, RTSP/RTP, and SHOUTcast/Icecast—not RTMP. The documentation’s example uses 12000 milliseconds (12 seconds) as the offline threshold before retrying; that is an example configuration, not a universal recovery time or a measured performance result. It is not documented as a general fix for an outgoing YouTube RTMP target. Check the incoming protocol and the current protocol-specific Wowza reconnection guidance before relying on it.
The reviewed guidance does not establish that reconnecting always resumes the same YouTube event, or specify a universal delay before playback returns. Verify the incoming status, target status, and YouTube preview rather than assuming a reconnect guarantees continuous playback.
