In YouTube Studio, schedule the encoder-based live stream and set its visibility to Private. Save and verify that setting in the Live Control Room before the event. Do not choose Unlisted if only you and specifically selected viewers should have access: anyone with an unlisted link can watch and reshare it.
Set the scheduled live stream to Private

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open the Manage tab.

Schedule a new stream, or select an existing scheduled stream and edit its details.

Set Visibility to Private and save.

Return to the stream details in Live Control Room and verify that the saved visibility is still Private before sharing or starting the broadcast. YouTube says streamers can choose Public, Private, or Unlisted; defaults can differ, so check rather than assume the stream is private. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Privacy and the encoder preview are separate checks. Confirm the visibility in the stream details, then confirm the feed in the Live Control Room preview before the event.
Connect and check the encoder before the event

In YouTube Studio, get the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled event and enter them in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: it lets an encoder send a feed to your YouTube stream.

Allow time to test the encoder and preview. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Check the Live Control Room preview before the scheduled start. These preparation steps do not replace verifying the stream’s Private visibility. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

At the event, use Live Control Room to change the stream’s visibility to Public if everyone should be able to watch. Verify the current visibility and event state in Studio; the exact interface transition for a prerecorded encoder workflow may vary.

You do not need to buy a hardware encoder just to set privacy. YouTube describes software and hardware encoders as ways to send a stream, and suggests professional hardware for higher-production events. Choose based on your production setup, not as a requirement for making a scheduled stream Private. See YouTube’s overview of streaming encoders.
Private, Unlisted, or Public?

YouTube explains these visibility options in its video privacy settings guidance. If the event is Private, do not rely on an unlisted link as a substitute for access control.

A scheduled live stream is not a scheduled video upload
If you want an ordinary prerecorded video to appear at a particular date and time, schedule the uploaded video to publish then. YouTube lets you set a private upload to become public at a specified date, time, and time zone. That is scheduled publication, not an encoder-based live event. For an event viewers experience as a live stream, create and configure a scheduled live stream instead. See YouTube’s guidance on scheduling video publication.
YouTube notes that a public video’s watch-page date is based on Pacific Standard Time. If the displayed publication date matters, account for that when scheduling.

The stream appears to be public: Reopen the scheduled stream’s details in Live Control Room and check its saved Visibility value. Set it to Private and save if needed; do not assume the default is private.

Someone outside the invited group can watch: Check whether the stream is Unlisted. Anyone with an unlisted link can watch and reshare it. Change the visibility to Private if access should be limited to you and selected viewers.

The encoder is connected, but you cannot confirm the feed: Check the Live Control Room preview separately from the privacy setting, and make sure the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended scheduled event.

You expect an uploaded video to start playing automatically as a live event: A scheduled video publication and an encoder-based live stream are different workflows. The cited YouTube guidance covers scheduled publication and encoder streaming separately; it does not establish a native workflow that turns an uploaded file directly into a scheduled live broadcast without an encoder.

You are unsure what non-invited viewers can see or whether they get reminders: The available YouTube guidance does not fully specify how a Private scheduled event is displayed to non-invited viewers or whether they receive reminders. Verify the event’s current visibility and presentation in Studio instead of assuming how it appears to others.
