On Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11, assign OBS to a GPU in Settings > System > Display > Graphics, then choose the recommendation that matches your capture method: OBS says to use High Performance for Game Capture or Window Capture, and Power Saving for Display Capture. Close OBS before changing the preference. This Windows setting selects the GPU that runs OBS; it does not select the video encoder in OBS.
Choose the GPU according to how the picture enters OBS
First identify the source used by the loop: a local video in an OBS media source, a game, a window, a display, or a capture card. OBS’s documented High Performance/Power Saving guidance is specifically for Game Capture, Window Capture, and Display Capture. It does not give a universal GPU assignment for every media-source or capture-card arrangement, so do not assume a local video source should be treated like a game.
On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, Windows may let you choose which GPU runs OBS. OBS’s guide recommends:

These preferences matter most when the PC has multiple GPUs. They are not a general requirement to force OBS onto a discrete GPU. If a loop is stable, there is no reason to change GPU assignment merely because it is a dedicated streaming PC.

Set the Windows GPU preference
- Close OBS.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add OBS if it is not listed. The usual 64-bit executable path is
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. - Select OBS, open its options, and choose the preference that matches the capture method: High Performance for Game Capture or Window Capture; Power Saving for Display Capture.
- Save the choice, reopen OBS, and test the actual loop.
These instructions apply to Windows 10 version 1809 and later and Windows 11. The precise labels or layout can vary with Windows updates.
Choose the encoder separately in OBS
The Windows graphics preference determines which GPU runs OBS. The encoder is a separate choice in OBS’s Output settings. If the installed hardware and OBS offer a suitable hardware encoder, it can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Encoder availability depends on the hardware generation, operating system, OBS version, and output configuration; do not assume every system offers the same H.264, HEVC, or AV1 options.

OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because encoding runs on a specialized GPU component rather than the included x264 software encoder. That is general guidance, not a guarantee that hardware encoding improves every configuration. For NVIDIA-specific controls, OBS’s advanced NVENC documentation applies to the stated OBS 31.0-era features and supported GPU generations; its settings should not be generalized to other vendors or encoders.
Match YouTube output settings to the stream
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its live encoder options. Use a codec supported by both your encoder and the destination, and check YouTube’s current settings guidance for the intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart.

YouTube’s published recommended bitrates include these values for 60 fps streams. They are platform recommendations, not measurements of your network or a guarantee that a given connection will sustain the stream.

For other frame rates or resolutions, consult YouTube’s encoder table rather than extrapolating from these examples. Set output resolution and frame rate to what the source, encoder, and upload connection can sustain; the title alone does not establish a suitable target or a particular GPU model.

Test the loop before leaving it unattended
- Start the stream privately or unlisted if appropriate, and let the same loop and output settings run long enough to observe behavior.
- Check OBS statistics for rendering or encoding overload, and check YouTube’s stream health for delivery issues.
- Watch resource use and close or reduce competing GPU workloads if OBS is overloaded.
- If GPU overload persists on Windows, OBS suggests trying to run OBS as administrator. Treat this as a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix.
- Only consider changing GPU assignment, encoder settings, or hardware after the test identifies a bottleneck. A loop workload by itself does not establish a need for a more powerful or second GPU.
