You can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on a cloud VPS. YouTube does not turn a video upload into a live broadcast: the VPS must send the file to YouTube in real time, using the stream URL and key created in YouTube Studio. The cloud panel provisions and provides access to the server; the stream is set up in YouTube Live Control Room.
Before you start: check channel access and prepare the VPS
Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check eligibility before spending time configuring the server. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance
Provision a VPS and plan its capacity
In your cloud provider’s control panel, create a Linux VPS in a region that makes sense for your audience and network route. The panel’s labels and steps differ by provider; there is no universal control-panel path. Connect to the server using the access method your provider supplies, install FFmpeg using the operating system’s package manager or a trusted current build, and upload the video file.
- Check available disk space for the media and any working files.
- Consider whether the file can be sent without transcoding or whether you need to encode it on the VPS. Transcoding needs more CPU than copying compatible audio and video streams.
- Compare the selected stream’s bitrate with the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, leaving room for network variation. The source guidance does not establish a universal minimum VPS size or bandwidth requirement.
- Confirm the file contains the intended video and audio tracks and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the formats and output protocol you plan to use.
Do not assume that a cloud server guarantees a particular upload rate or uninterrupted service. Those depend on the server plan, network path, and configuration.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab for immediate setup, or open Manage → Schedule Stream to prepare a scheduled event. Set the title, privacy, and schedule as appropriate. A scheduled stream can appear as an upcoming event and allow viewers to opt into notifications. YouTube’s encoder and scheduling guide
- Open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key. These credentials are specific to the stream configuration; use the values shown there rather than guessing an ingest address. YouTube stream settings
- Prefer the RTMPS endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL. In the stream settings, use the lock icon to reveal the secure URL, then copy that exact URL. Verify that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS before relying on it. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions
Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and source control. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement.
Choose compatible video and audio settings
For encoder settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not more than 4 seconds). Match the bitrate recommendation to the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate; YouTube’s settings page publishes a matrix for those combinations. For example, its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular VPS can sustain the upload. If the file’s codecs and parameters already fit your intended output, stream-copying can reduce server processing compared with transcoding. If they do not fit, configure an encode deliberately and check that the VPS has enough CPU capacity. This is a technical trade-off, not a benchmark for any specific server.

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
Here, -re reads the file at real-time speed instead of sending it as fast as the server can process it. For YouTube, replace myfile with the path to your media and the example destination with the exact YouTube ingest URL and stream key, using the syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build. Do not publish a real key in a command example or shared script. For RTMPS, use the secure endpoint shown in Live Control Room and first verify protocol support. FFmpeg protocol documentation
This pattern sends a single file once. A looping option may be appropriate for a repeating program, but looping is not required for a single scheduled event; decide what viewers should see when the file ends before configuring an indefinite repeat. Do not mistake a process running on a VPS for proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Preview, go live, monitor, and stop cleanly
- For a scheduled encoder stream, start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive and analyze the feed. YouTube suggests setting up the encoder at least 2 hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check stream health. Confirm that the intended video and audio are present before clicking Go live.
- Monitor audio, video, and connection stability during the broadcast. YouTube’s operational tips also recommend testing encoder failover where a backup arrangement is available; the sources do not establish that every VPS plan or control panel supports one. YouTube’s live-streaming tips
- When finished, end the broadcast from YouTube Live Control Room and stop FFmpeg on the VPS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Privacy, copyright, and monetization checks
Choose public, unlisted, or private visibility based on the intended audience and test plan. An unlisted test can help you verify the end-to-end setup without making the broadcast publicly discoverable, but it is still a YouTube stream and should use content you have the right to broadcast.
Uploading a recording does not grant live-streaming rights to its music, footage, or other material. Check licenses and permissions for every element in the file, including background music and documentary clips, and account for any applicable YouTube restrictions before broadcasting. Monetization is not automatic: YouTube says live monetization depends on eligibility and program access.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no stream | Incorrect stream URL or key, encoder not running, or unsupported output protocol. | Copy the URL and key again from that stream’s Live Control Room settings. Check the FFmpeg output and confirm the installed build supports the chosen protocol. |
| RTMPS connection fails | The build may not support RTMPS, or the destination may not be the secure endpoint for this stream. | Verify protocol support in the installed FFmpeg build and copy the RTMPS URL revealed through YouTube’s lock-icon control. Do not substitute a guessed address. |
| Preview is delayed, unstable, or reports poor health | Outbound capacity may be insufficient or inconsistent for the selected bitrate. | Compare the actual encoder bitrate with the recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Reduce the output demand if needed, and check sustained VPS network capacity. |
| Video appears but audio does not | The file may lack an audio track, or the selected audio format may not be compatible with the encoder settings. | Inspect the media file’s tracks and confirm the output uses a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3. |
| FFmpeg stops when the file ends | The command is sending one file once, rather than repeating it. | If the program is meant to repeat, configure a loop deliberately and test the transition. For a one-time event, the process ending with the file may be expected. |
| Someone else can send video to the stream | The stream key may have been exposed. | Reset the key in YouTube Studio and replace the encoder’s stored credential. Keep the new key private. |
