It describes the disconnection, not who or what caused it. Check OBS’s connection settings, software interference and network path before blaming YouTube or replacing hardware.
What OBS error 10054 means
Windows identifies error 10054 as WSAECONNRESET: “An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.” That does not establish that YouTube deliberately ended the stream, or identify whether OBS, a network device, software or a problem farther along the route was responsible. Microsoft’s error-code reference describes the general socket error, not a YouTube-specific cause: Windows Sockets Error Codes.
OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server, or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. The cause may be outside OBS Studio’s control. Its connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, recommends the following checks: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
Work through these Windows and network checks

Check the server and bitrate in OBS
If the streaming service offers another server or ingest endpoint, test it. Lower the video bitrate to a level your stable upload capacity can sustain and that complies with the service’s limits. OBS’s guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guaranteed YouTube setting. A speed test is only a snapshot; leave headroom for upload fluctuations and other network use. Lowering bitrate can improve stability, but may reduce image quality.

Test OBS network options
Open Settings → Advanced → Network. Keep Bind to IP set to Default, as OBS recommends. On Windows, test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. You can also test IPv4 Only; if it does not help, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting. Change one option at a time and test, so you can tell which change mattered. Labels and options can vary by OBS version.
Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up. It does not repair the underlying network problem and can lower stream quality while it adapts.

Temporarily rule out interfering software
A VPN can make the route unstable, and security software can interfere with traffic from OBS to the ingest server. Temporarily test without the suspected VPN or security component, then restore protection. If security software is confirmed as the cause, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving security disabled. Network-prioritization utilities bundled with some systems can also affect OBS traffic.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and check drivers
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection if practical. This helps distinguish a wireless problem from a wider network issue; it is not a guaranteed fix. Update the network adapter driver using the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s guidance. Cables, network cards, modems, routers, switches and extenders can fail, but do not assume hardware is at fault or replace equipment before testing simpler causes. Ask your ISP if you are unsure.

Restart the modem and router, then contact your ISP
Restart both the modem and router. If disconnections continue after the OBS and local-network checks, contact your ISP and describe when they occur. Congestion or routing problems beyond your home network may need the ISP’s investigation.
Choose tests that isolate the cause without adding unnecessary risk
