One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo loop a pre-recorded 4K video on YouTube Live with OBS, create a YouTube broadcast, add the video to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, connect OBS using the stream key, and configure the encoder for YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance. Test the complete signal path before relying on it. Looping restarts the file; it does not keep your computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube broadcast online by itself.
What “continuous” means with OBS
OBS can restart a local video when playback ends, so the video can repeat while the scene and stream are running. For a rotation of multiple videos, OBS can loop a playlist through its VLC Video source. Neither method guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation: your computer must stay powered on, OBS must keep running, the connection must remain available, and YouTube must continue receiving the stream. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal maximum runtime or guarantee indefinite uptime for this workflow.
Before you start
- A video file stored on the computer running OBS. Supported Media Source formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- OBS Studio, a stable wired or otherwise dependable internet connection, and enough upload capacity for your chosen 4K settings.
- If you plan to loop several files using VLC Video, VLC installed with the same architecture as OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation says to install 64-bit VLC.
Set up the YouTube broadcast and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and configure its settings.
- Copy the stream key and server/stream URL shown for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Decide whether to manage auto-start and auto-stop in the stream settings. Confirm the broadcast’s title, visibility, and other settings before going live.
If live streaming is not enabled on the channel yet, allow time for activation; YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
Make an OBS scene that loops one video
- In OBS, select or create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. Keep the source visible in the active scene.
- Check the OBS preview: confirm the image is framed correctly on the canvas and that the video’s audio is present at an appropriate level.
- Let the file play through its end during a test and verify it starts again. This checks the loop behavior, not the reliability of a long-running broadcast.
Loop a playlist instead of one file
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS; the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source to the scene and create a playlist from the video files you want to rotate.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then check the preview and audio as each item changes.
- Test through the end of the playlist to make sure it returns to the beginning as intended.
A playlist gives you a repeating sequence rather than a single repeated file. It does not remove the need to keep the computer, OBS, and network operating.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS settings and choose YouTube or YouTube RTMPS as the service when that option is available.
- Enter or select the stream key from Live Control Room. If you use a custom server setup, use the server URL and key provided there.
- Prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP.
- Save the settings, then confirm OBS is sending the scene you intend to broadcast.
Configure 4K resolution, frame rate, and encoder
Set the OBS output to 3840×2160 when you intend to send a 4K signal. Choose 30 or 60 fps according to the source footage and what the computer’s encoder can sustain. Sending 60 fps is not useful if the source is 30 fps or the encoder cannot maintain the output reliably.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these 2160p recommendations and minimums. These are ingestion settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them.

| Live format | YouTube-recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p / 4K, 30 fps, H.264 | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K, 60 fps, H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K, 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K, 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
Use the row that matches both your codec and frame rate; do not substitute guidance for uploading a finished video. YouTube’s general live guidance also specifies CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a standard SDR setup, follow YouTube’s Rec. 709 guidance.
Choose a codec your encoder can handle
H.264, H.265, and AV1 are among YouTube’s listed video options, but whether OBS can encode a given option depends on the operating system and hardware. Hardware encoders can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and may reduce CPU load. Support varies by GPU generation and system; older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. Do not assume a particular computer can encode 4K smoothly without checking its capabilities and testing.

Use 30 or 60 fps deliberately
Use the frame rate of the source where practical. A 60 fps output can preserve motion in 60 fps footage, but requires the corresponding higher YouTube bitrate recommendation and sufficient encoder and upload capacity. A 30 fps source sent at 60 fps does not create additional captured motion.
Know the 4K latency trade-off
YouTube does not offer its low-latency option at 2160p; 4K streams use normal latency. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the delivered viewer quality can vary with playback conditions.

HDR is optional
HDR is not required for 4K. YouTube’s HDR documentation describes OBS support from version 30.1 and requires suitable HDR source and device capabilities, plus specific HEVC Main 10 and color configuration. Its guidance covers RTMPS and HLS, with additional constraints for HLS. Treat HDR as a separate advanced setup rather than enabling it for an ordinary SDR stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Start with a representative section of the video that includes motion and audio.
- Start sending from OBS and inspect the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and resolve warnings before proceeding.
- Confirm video and audio in the live output, not just the OBS canvas. YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream.
- For a long session, monitor the stream and use stable power and connectivity. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate.
For example, a 42 Mbps recommended 4K30 H.264 bitrate calls for more than the encoded bitrate alone in available upload capacity; applying YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation means planning for at least 50.4 Mbps of upload capacity under the test conditions. A connection’s advertised speed does not by itself prove sustained upload stability.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Looping a file through OBS does not change the rights or YouTube policies that apply to its contents. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check whether the license permits a continuous public broadcast. A technically successful stream may still receive a copyright claim or be interrupted if it uses material without the necessary rights. YouTube monetization eligibility and decisions about repetitive or reused material are separate from whether OBS can loop it; do not assume that a 24/7 replay qualifies for monetization.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream does not connect: Recheck the selected YouTube service, stream key, and server URL against Live Control Room. If the key was exposed or may be wrong, reset it and update OBS.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec and frame rate. Check sustained upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom; reduce output demands if the connection or encoder cannot sustain them.
- The file ends and stays stopped: Reopen Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled and the source remains active in the scene.
- A playlist source is missing or will not play: Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS architecture, then check the VLC Video source playlist and Loop Playlist setting.
- The video is cropped, stretched, or framed incorrectly: Inspect the source in the OBS canvas and adjust its fit or transform so the intended image fills the 3840Ă—2160 output without unintended cropping.
- There is no audio or it is too loud: Check that the media file has an audio track, inspect OBS audio meters during playback, and listen to the YouTube preview before going live.
- The stream stops after the computer sleeps, loses power, or OBS closes: A looping source cannot prevent these interruptions. Keep the machine awake and powered, and monitor the broadcast; these precautions reduce risk but do not guarantee uptime.
DIY OBS or cloud operation
OBS is the direct choice when you want to operate the encoder on your own computer and can keep the machine, power, software, and connection available. A cloud service shifts those operating demands away from the home computer; it is a different workflow, not a fix for rights issues or YouTube policy requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms. Nothing has to stay on at home, and YouTube-drop recovery is automatic. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans for the available billing periods and details.
