To play several local video files in sequence and repeat them on YouTube Live, install VLC, add an OBS Studio VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS sends one encoded live feed to YouTube; YouTube then creates viewer output formats for different devices and network conditions. If by “formats” you mean different file types, test each file in OBS/VLC before broadcasting.
What “multiple video formats” means here
There are two different format questions. You can put multiple local clips—potentially in different file types—in one OBS playlist. Separately, YouTube transcodes the single incoming live feed into multiple output formats for viewers. You do not need to send a separate stream for each viewer resolution or device.
- Local playback: OBS and VLC read your files and play them into the scene.
- Live ingestion: OBS encodes and sends one stream to YouTube using the stream URL, stream key, and chosen encoder settings.
- Viewer delivery: YouTube transcodes the live stream into output formats for viewers.
YouTube describes this viewer-side process in its encoder settings documentation.
Set up the repeating playlist in OBS
- Check YouTube live eligibility. YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also states a minimum age requirement. Review the current requirements for your account.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Keep the Live Control Room available for preview and stream-health messages.
- Install VLC, then open OBS Studio. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast and add a VLC Video source.
- Load the files in the intended order. In the source’s playlist controls, add the local video files and arrange them as needed. Leave shuffle off if they should play in a fixed sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist. This restarts the playlist after it reaches the end. The separate Loop setting on a single-file Media Source is for repeating one file, not for cycling a multi-file VLC playlist.
- Fit the source and check audio. Size or crop the source to fit the OBS canvas. Check that the expected audio is present and at a suitable level in the OBS mixer. Playlist playback and scene composition are separate from YouTube’s output settings.
OBS documents both the single-file Media Source and the playlist-capable VLC Video source in its media sources guide. Its listed Media Source file extensions include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support, but those lists do not guarantee that every codec inside every file will play correctly. Test the actual assets on the computer you intend to use.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- In the Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream credentials as appropriate to the available interface.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure encoder ingestion; use the server address and key provided for the stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Choose encoder settings for the live feed
The files in the playlist do not each need their own YouTube stream format. OBS encodes the composed scene as one live feed. Set that feed to match your connection and delivery needs; YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec, so there is no one bitrate that fits every setup.
- Rate control: use CBR, as YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies.
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video codec and frame rate: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate: select the relevant row in YouTube’s current bitrate table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not apply a bitrate recommendation for a different configuration.
- Network: check sustained upload capacity with a speed test and leave room for normal connection variation.
These are ingestion settings for the OBS-to-YouTube feed, not instructions to encode each source file into separate viewer formats. For the current tables and settings, consult YouTube’s encoder settings.

Test before the broadcast and monitor it
Before announcing or relying on the stream, run a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any warnings. Watch representative portions of the playlist, including transitions between files and the point where it should loop back to the beginning. OBS’s source documentation describes playlist controls but does not promise seamless transitions between unrelated files.
For an extended broadcast, keep the computer awake, maintain reliable internet access, ensure local media remain available, and monitor OBS playback and YouTube stream health. YouTube advises monitoring stream-health messages; neither a playlist loop nor a successful test guarantees uninterrupted operation indefinitely. See its live encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- A VLC Video source is unavailable or does not play: install VLC, then restart or reopen OBS and test the source again. Confirm the specific file and its codec play on that computer.
- The playlist stops after the last clip: enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source. Check that you have not enabled only a single-file loop on a different source.
- Files play in an unexpected order: reorder the playlist and leave shuffle disabled for a fixed sequence.
- The picture is cropped, too small, or off-canvas: resize or fit the source in the OBS scene and verify the canvas composition before going live.
- Audio is missing or too loud: check the source’s audio output and OBS mixer level during the test; do not assume every clip has the same level.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops: check the Live Control Room message, verify the stream URL/key, and compare your sustained upload capacity and OBS output settings with YouTube’s recommendations. Reconnect using the current credentials if needed.
- A clip has a black screen or fails partway through: test the original file outside the live broadcast, then try a compatible version or another playback method. An extension appearing in a supported list does not establish that every internal codec is supported.
Copyright and channel suitability
Having a file locally does not by itself establish that you have permission to broadcast its video or audio. Before looping documentaries, music, archival footage, or other material, check the rights and licenses for both the visuals and soundtrack. YouTube’s channel monetization policies also assess reused content separately from copyright permission; a stream can raise monetization issues even when a rights claim is not the immediate problem. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and copyright guidance for the current rules.
