To recover a 4K60 YouTube Live loop after a power outage, every link in the chain must restart: power to the PC and network equipment, the operating system, the encoder, and the connection to YouTube. YouTube’s auto-start setting does not power on a computer, and an encoder may fail to reconnect if it launches before the internet is ready. Configure and test each dependency; a single-PC setup cannot guarantee recovery from every outage.
Choose between riding through the outage and restarting afterward
A UPS can keep a streaming PC and network equipment running through a short interruption, or provide time for an orderly shutdown. It cannot supply power indefinitely: when its battery runs down, it may switch off. Actual runtime depends on the UPS, connected load, and battery condition; there is no universal runtime that guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. Schneider Electric explains that a computer also needs the relevant BIOS power-on behavior enabled to boot after a UPS shuts off and power returns (Schneider Electric support).
Plan separately for brief interruptions and longer outages. A UPS may bridge the former; automatic recovery after power returns depends on firmware, the operating system, encoder startup, and network readiness.
Configure the PC to power back on
Enable AC power recovery in BIOS or UEFI
- Open your computer or motherboard’s BIOS/UEFI setup. The key or method for entering setup varies by manufacturer and model.
- Find the power-recovery setting. It may be called “Restore AC Power Loss,” “AC Power Recovery,” or something similar.
- Choose the option that powers on after AC returns. On ASUS boards, the documented choices include “Power On” and “Last State”; “Power Off” is the example default. Choose according to the behavior you want, and consult the instructions for your exact model (ASUS: Restore AC Power Loss).
- Save the setting, then test that the computer starts when power is restored. Names and behavior vary by hardware; enabling an option with a similar name is not proof the whole streaming setup will recover.
Start the operating system and encoder automatically
Configure the operating system to launch the streaming software after boot or sign-in, then make sure the encoder opens the saved scene, video source, and YouTube stream configuration. If the computer stops at a sign-in screen or a prompt, the encoder may not launch until someone intervenes.

An OBS community answer describes adding an OBS shortcut to Windows startup or using Task Scheduler, and adding --startstreaming to the shortcut target. This is community guidance posted March 21, 2024, not a guarantee for every current OBS release or Windows configuration. Check whether the option remains supported in your installed version and test its behavior before relying on it (OBS forum discussion).
Allow for the network to come back first
The PC can boot before the modem, router, or upstream internet connection is ready. The cited OBS discussion cautions that auto-reconnect may not work if OBS’s initial connection attempt fails. A launch-at-boot setup that makes one immediate attempt can therefore leave the stream offline after an outage.

Arrange a delayed launch or a retry mechanism appropriate to your operating system and encoder, and verify that it retries after a failed initial connection. Do not assume a delay that works on one network will work on another: recovery time varies. Test with your actual modem, router, PC, and encoder startup sequence.
Set up the YouTube stream and its encoder
Save the stream destination and check the start workflow
A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. You can reuse a custom stream key. In YouTube Studio, review the stream’s settings in Live Control Room, including auto-start and auto-stop. These settings control how a stream starts or stops from the encoder; they do not turn a powered-off PC back on. Check whether your selected workflow requires an operator to click “Go live” after the encoder reconnects (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).

Match 4K60 settings to the codec
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. Set the bitrate for the codec you actually use; do not apply one codec’s figures to another.
| Codec | YouTube’s 4K/2160p, 60 fps bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum |
These are YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations, not independent benchmarks or guarantees. Check the current table and your encoder’s selected codec before setting a value (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. At the listed recommended bitrates, that means planning for roughly 60 Mbps of available upload capacity for H.264 at 50 Mbps, or 42 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 35 Mbps. Those calculations apply the stated 20% headroom to the respective recommended video bitrates; real network conditions can still disrupt the stream. YouTube also says 4K is optimized for normal latency and that the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K (YouTube Help: streaming tips).
Test recovery before depending on it
- With the intended stream settings, start the encoder and confirm that the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health before going live.
- Confirm the encoder is using the intended saved scene, loop source, stream key, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Test network recovery by interrupting the connection in a controlled way, then observe whether the encoder reconnects after the network returns. YouTube recommends checking stream health and testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. That procedure concerns a configured backup encoder; it does not prove that one computer will restart automatically after a power outage.
- Test the full power-recovery chain under controlled conditions: source, UPS if used, modem/router, PC, operating system, encoder, and YouTube workflow. Verify what happens if the network comes back later than the PC.
- Check any local recording or archive you rely on. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, previewing the stream, and monitoring stream health (YouTube Help: streaming tips).
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
For streams under 12 hours, YouTube says it can automatically create an archive, including for 1440p and 2160p streams. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous loop should not be treated as one permanent YouTube recording: plan local recording and session management if you need an archive, and keep a local copy as a backup (YouTube Help: Archive live streams).

Troubleshooting after an outage
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The PC stays off after power returns | AC recovery is disabled, set to the wrong behavior, or unsupported by the hardware. | Revisit the BIOS/UEFI power-recovery setting and the manufacturer’s instructions. Test startup after saving. |
| The PC boots, but the encoder does not open | Startup automation is missing, blocked by sign-in, or points to the wrong application or profile. | Check the OS startup or scheduled task, the saved encoder configuration, and whether a sign-in prompt requires manual action. |
| The encoder opens but stays offline | The network was unavailable at the first connection attempt, or the stream key or destination is wrong. | Confirm the connection is working, verify the saved YouTube stream configuration, and test a delayed launch or retry behavior. |
| YouTube receives the encoder feed, but the broadcast does not go live | The selected YouTube workflow may require a manual “Go live” action, or its auto-start setting is not configured as expected. | Check Live Control Room and the stream’s auto-start settings; confirm the required action for your workflow. |
| The stream is unstable at 4K60 | Upload capacity may be insufficient or variable, settings may not match the selected codec, or the connection may be disrupted. | Check stream health, codec-specific bitrate, constant bitrate, two-second keyframes (no more than four seconds), and available upload headroom. |
| A long-running stream has no YouTube archive | The session exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive behavior. | Use local recording and plan session management if an archive is required. |
