Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For one repeating classroom video, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a playlist, add VLC Video, build the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. These settings repeat media; they do not guarantee a continuous 24/7 broadcast. Your computer, power, internet connection, OBS and YouTube’s ingest must also keep working.
Choose the right OBS source
| Need | OBS source | Loop control | Important dependency or behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video | Media Source | Loop | No VLC installation is required for this source. You can set what happens when playback ends or the source becomes inactive. |
| Repeat a list of files | VLC Video | Loop Playlist; shuffle is optional | VLC must be installed. With 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents stop-when-hidden and restart-when-visible as the default visibility behavior. |
OBS’s Media Sources guide lists local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. See the OBS Sources Guide for how sources fit into scenes and layouts.
Loop one classroom video with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the classroom stream. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, give it a recognizable name, and select OK.
- In the source properties, select the local file you want to play. Turn on Loop, then select OK.
- Check the preview. Resize and position the source in the scene, and confirm that its audio is routed as intended.
- Start a supervised test stream before relying on the setup. Watch the playback through a full loop and check both picture and sound.
Set the end-of-playback and scene behavior
- Restart playback when source becomes active: use this when the video should begin from the start each time its source becomes active, such as when returning to a scene.
- Show nothing when playback ends: controls whether anything remains visible after the file finishes. With looping enabled, playback should repeat rather than reach its normal end; this setting still matters if you turn looping off or playback otherwise ends.
- Close file when inactive: unloads the file while the source is inactive. This can reduce what remains loaded, but the video may take a moment to reload when the source is shown again.
Choose these options around your scene transitions. If the video is hidden and later shown, verify whether you want it to continue, restart or reload; do not assume every source keeps playing in the background.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC before setting up the source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the 64-bit VLC version so OBS can use it.
- In the selected scene’s Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, check the VLC installation and its bitness against OBS.
- Create or select the playlist and add the classroom video files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Enable shuffle only if you want the playback order to vary.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents stop-when-hidden and restart-when-visible as the default. Test scene changes to make sure the playlist resumes in the way you expect.
- Preview the playlist and listen to its audio before starting a public stream.
For a single file, Media Source is the more direct choice; VLC Video is useful when you need playlist controls. Neither source type, by itself, makes the broadcast more reliable.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm that the channel can livestream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and a streamer aged at least 16. YouTube may change these requirements; check its live-streaming eligibility guidance if the option is unavailable.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream credentials as prompted. YouTube describes the stream key as password-like: keep it private, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start with a private or otherwise controlled test where possible. Check the preview in Live Control Room, verify that the event is accessible to the intended audience, and monitor audio and video before sharing it with a class.
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for resolution, bitrate and keyframes rather than relying on generic settings: the appropriate values depend on the output you choose and the current YouTube guidance. Check upload capacity before going live; available upload bandwidth should exceed the stream bitrate with headroom. YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Its streaming tips recommend testing, previewing and monitoring, not assuming an encoder will remain connected unattended.
Plan for a real 24/7 operation
OBS looping handles media playback only. A continuous stream also depends on the computer remaining powered on, a stable network connection, OBS continuing to run, and YouTube accepting the incoming feed. A crash, power cut, internet interruption or ingest problem can interrupt the broadcast. Arrange someone to monitor the stream and a clear recovery plan: reconnect OBS, confirm the YouTube preview has returned, and check the picture and sound before leaving the stream unattended again. A wired Ethernet connection may help avoid some local Wi-Fi variability, but a cable does not ensure uninterrupted service.

Do not assume a full-day replay will be archived
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will produce a complete replay. The cited guidance does not settle archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours. If students need a replay, test the exact workflow and check current YouTube guidance rather than promising a complete archive.
Keep classroom content and access appropriate
Before broadcasting, confirm you have the rights or permission to use every video, image, music track and other material in the stream. YouTube’s copyright and platform rules apply to live broadcasts as well as uploaded videos; a loop setting does not grant permission or prevent a restriction. Also verify that the stream’s visibility and audience settings match the class, and check access from the perspective of an intended viewer before distributing the link.
