Use an encoder instead when you need overlays or want to bring in production hardware such as external cameras, microphones, or preamps.
Check that your channel can livestream
Before planning a location or outing, confirm that your channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s stated minimum age to livestream is 16. If you intend to use the phone app, check that the mobile live option is available on the account and device you plan to use; meeting general eligibility requirements does not by itself guarantee access on every handset or account. All content in the broadcast must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Restrictions can affect both a stream and an account’s ability to go live. YouTube says an active restriction cannot be evaded by switching to another channel, so resolve account issues rather than trying to route around them.
Choose your streaming method
YouTube mobile app: the straightforward choice
For a walk, outing, vlog, or quick update, start with the YouTube app on your phone. It keeps the workflow simple and avoids adding an encoder unless you have a specific production need. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods; the mobile route is intended for phone-first uses such as vlogging and quick updates.

Encoder: when production control matters
A third-party encoder is worth considering if you need overlays or want to connect external production hardware, such as cameras, microphones, or preamps. It offers more production flexibility, but adds setup complexity. A dedicated encoder, external microphone, or gimbal is not a requirement for an IRL stream.
Choose vertical, horizontal, or both before you start
Decide how viewers should see the scene before going live. Vertical streams provide a full-screen mobile viewing experience and can appear in the Shorts feed. Horizontal video suits a wide composition and supports features such as clickable links in chat. Each orientation affects how much of the scene fits comfortably in frame.

YouTube Live Control Room can create horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) versions at the same time. Available layout choices include center crop, fit-to-phone-width, and stacked, and both formats share the same live chat. Inspect the vertical preview carefully: a center crop can cut off people or activity near the edges. The vertical stream cannot be added retroactively after the broadcast has started. YouTube documents these options in its live-streaming help.
Prepare and start a phone-first IRL stream
- Verify eligibility. Confirm channel verification, check for live restrictions from the previous 90 days, and make sure the mobile live option is available to your account.
- Choose your orientation. Decide on vertical or horizontal framing. If you are setting up dual format in Live Control Room, select the layouts before the broadcast begins.
- Check the shot. Review the preview in the orientation viewers will see. For dual format, look for subjects or action that a vertical crop could exclude.
- Start through the YouTube mobile workflow. Open the YouTube app and follow its available live-streaming controls for your account. Labels and availability can vary by device and account, so use the on-screen options rather than assuming every phone has an identical interface.
- Monitor the broadcast and moderate as needed. Use YouTube’s moderation and privacy controls appropriately, and keep the stream within platform rules throughout the broadcast.
Keep the setup as light as your production needs allow. A smartphone gimbal stabilizer may help reduce walking shake, but YouTube does not require or recommend one in the cited guidance. External audio gear is likewise an option, not a prerequisite.

Android compatibility notes
Google’s developer documentation describes an Android Mobile Live deep-link flow that hands stream setup to the YouTube app. For that documented integration flow, the listed requirements are:
- Android Marshmallow (API 23) or later.
- A camera capable of recording 720p at 30 Hz or better, plus an onboard microphone.
- Hardware-accelerated audio encoding for 8-bit PCM mono audio to AAC at 44.1 kHz or better.
- Hardware video encoding for 720p H.264/AVC at 30 Hz or better.
- YouTube app version 13.02 or later.
These are requirements for the developer-documented Android integration flow, not a guarantee that every device or account can access mobile livestreaming. Check the current availability in your own YouTube app. Technical details are in Google’s Android Mobile Live documentation.

What to expect from YouTube Live
YouTube reported that more than 600 million logged-in viewers watched live content, including archives, on average each day in August 2026. That is a platform-wide figure, not a forecast for an individual channel or broadcast. The statistic appears in YouTube’s Live updates announcement.
