For a standard YouTube RTMP or RTMPS broadcast, use the current Stream URL from that stream’s Live Control Room as the encoder’s server address, then enter its associated stream key in the encoder’s key field. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube’s explicit instructions for copying a separate Backup server URL cover HLS ingestion; a second URL by itself does not configure or prove automatic encoder failover.
Which URL belongs in the encoder?
Use the Stream URL displayed for the specific live stream you are setting up. In the encoder, put it in the server or URL field, and put the associated stream key in the separate key field when the encoder requests one. If the encoder provides a YouTube preset, YouTube says to use it. Scheduled streams follow the same general connection process. Copy the details from the current Live Control Room stream rather than reusing a URL from an unrelated broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
For ordinary RTMP(S), do not substitute a Backup server URL merely because the label sounds more resilient. The primary Stream URL is the destination for the encoder’s main feed. A backup destination is relevant only when the selected protocol and the encoder workflow support it.
RTMP or RTMPS: choose the secure URL when supported
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream tab (or open the scheduled stream), then go to Stream settings and use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. Copy that current URL into the encoder’s server field and use the associated key as directed. Check that the URL begins with the intended protocol; an RTMP address is not interchangeable with an RTMPS address. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the encoder reports an SSL or timeout problem, YouTube’s guidance is to verify that both the protocol and server are set to RTMPS. Port 443 may be needed by the encoder in some configurations. Use the current stream-specific address, not a generic example URL.
When a separate Backup server URL applies: HLS ingestion
YouTube’s documented primary-and-backup URL procedure is for HLS. Select or create a stream key configured for HLS, copy the resulting HTTPS Stream URL to the encoder, and, if you need backup ingestion, copy the displayed Backup server URL as well. The HLS stream key is embedded in the URL, so it does not need to be entered separately. Follow YouTube’s HLS-specific encoder settings, including TS segment durations of 1–4 seconds. HLS sends segments rather than one continuous RTMP-style feed, so it has higher latency than RTMP. Do not apply the HLS URL/key instructions to a conventional RTMP(S) encoder setup, and confirm that your encoder supports the chosen protocol and any backup destination you intend to use.
A backup URL is not the same as tested encoder failover
A backup ingest destination and a backup encoder are related resilience measures, but they are not equivalent. To test backup encoder failover, YouTube advises stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. That test verifies the configured workflow; merely seeing a second URL does not. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Configure the primary and backup encoders or feeds according to the protocol and encoder documentation.
- Before the event, start the intended workflow and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network connection, then confirm that playback moves to the backup feed.
- Check video, audio, viewer playback, and recovery behavior before relying on the setup for a live event.
YouTube recommends planning upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with an additional 20% headroom. This is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular venue or internet connection will sustain those feeds. Test on the actual network you will use.
Encoder settings that can affect compatibility
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and specifies 4 seconds as the maximum for the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings. These values help diagnose encoder compatibility; they do not change which stream-specific URL to copy. YouTube identifies HLS as an option for HDR or capabilities that RTMP(S) does not support. Common connection and failover problems
- Encoder cannot connect: Confirm that the URL came from the current stream in Live Control Room, that the protocol matches the encoder configuration, and that the stream key belongs to that stream.
- RTMPS SSL or timeout error: Verify that the address is the RTMPS URL and that the encoder is configured for RTMPS. If its network configuration requires it, check whether port 443 is available.
- HLS stream does not authenticate: Check that the encoder is using the HLS URL with its embedded key; the separate-key procedure for standard RTMP(S) does not apply to this URL.
- Backup does not take over: Do not assume the backup URL alone enables failover. Confirm that the encoder or feed configuration supports backup ingestion, then perform YouTube’s primary-stop or Ethernet-disconnect test.
- Primary and backup feeds are unstable: Compare total required upload capacity—both bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom—with the connection available, then test while monitoring stream health.
