Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your YouTube stream stopped after an OBS Studio update, first identify whether OBS is crashing, losing its connection, or being rejected by YouTube. The timing alone does not prove the update caused it. Preserve your current profile, note the exact error, then test third-party plugins in OBS safe mode before changing stream settings. This order helps isolate the cause without needlessly rebuilding a working setup.
First identify what “stops” means
Before changing anything, note the OBS version, operating system, update date, and the exact status or error shown in OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. Check whether OBS closes or remains open, whether it reports dropped frames or an encoder error, and whether YouTube says the stream failed to start or lost its connection. Keep your current profile and settings intact while troubleshooting.
These symptoms point toward different causes: a crash can involve OBS or a component loaded by it; a connection drop can involve the outbound network; and a start or authentication failure can involve the selected service, stream URL, or key. OBS recommends testing ahead of an event and including a log when seeking support. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Test whether a third-party plugin is involved
OBS safe mode is a reversible isolation test: it disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets. If the problem disappears in safe mode, a third-party component may be involved; that result is a clue, not proof of which component is responsible.

- Close OBS and preserve your existing profile and settings.
- Launch OBS with the
--safe-modeparameter. Refer to the OBS Launch Parameters page for the supported launch options and how to use them for your setup. - Repeat the same action that triggered the failure, such as starting a test stream, and note whether the symptom changes.
- If safe mode changes the result, re-enable third-party items selectively, testing after each change. Check each plugin developer’s compatibility information for your operating system, CPU architecture, and installed OBS version.
Do not assume every plugin is affected by an OBS update, and avoid removing components before recording which change affects the result. OBS’s Plugins Guide explains compatibility considerations. Windows users should also check the Legacy Plugin Locations guidance: its page, dated September 21, 2026, describes the transition beginning with OBS Studio 33.0, flags legacy plugins, and says the Program Files legacy location will not load in OBS Studio 34.0 onwards. That is Windows-specific guidance; do not apply those paths or version notes to other operating systems.
Verify OBS output against YouTube’s requirements
If OBS opens but will not start or sustain a stream, inspect the service and output settings rather than applying a generic preset. In OBS, check the selected YouTube service and protocol, server URL, stream key, output mode, encoder, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. OBS’s Advanced output mode provides separate controls for streaming and recording; do not mistake recording settings for the live output.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 and recommends CBR. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds, with an interval not exceeding 4 seconds. Use the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table, and ensure your stable upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate.
| YouTube H.264 example | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current encoder-table values, accessed in 2026, for the specific H.264 resolution and frame-rate combinations shown—not universal settings for every codec or stream. Lowering the bitrate may help a connection that cannot sustain the configured rate, but it changes stream quality. YouTube’s full table gives separate recommendations for other combinations.

Check the stream URL and key if YouTube will not start
If OBS reports a start, connection, or authentication failure, open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the current stream URL and key are the ones configured in OBS. YouTube advises copying the key from Live Control Room into a third-party encoder when a stream fails to start. If you reset the key, update OBS with the new one as well. The key functions like a password for the stream: do not include it in a public log, screenshot, or support post.
YouTube explains the roles of the stream URL and key, and how to manage them, in Manage live stream settings. For start errors and other checks, see Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Separate encoder trouble from connection trouble
Check OBS’s encoder status and CPU load, and inspect a local recording or archive if available. YouTube recommends reviewing encoder errors and checking that the stream looks and sounds right in the encoder. A healthy local encoded stream does not prove that delivery to YouTube is healthy; if it looks sound locally but YouTube playback or ingest is not, test the outbound connection.
If OBS reports dropped frames or an intermittent connection, OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide suggests testing another server, lowering video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, checking VPN, security, and network-optimization software or drivers, and using wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi instability is plausible. These are diagnostic avenues, not guaranteed fixes; OBS notes that dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself.

A wired Ethernet test is relevant only when Wi-Fi instability is a plausible part of the problem. It will not fix a plugin incompatibility, an incorrect key, or an unsuitable output configuration.
Retest safely before the next live event
- Make one change at a time and record what changed and whether the symptom returned.
- Run a private or unlisted test, or schedule a test ahead of the event.
- Use audio and motion similar to the real stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test.
- If the failure persists, retain the exact error and a log for support, but remove or conceal the stream key before sharing anything publicly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock rather than repair a live camera-and-encoder setup, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream plays at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
