If your YouTube stream key looks like it has extra spaces after you paste it, recopy it from YouTube Studio and paste it into your encoder’s Stream Key field. Check for accidental spaces at the beginning or end, or between characters, and remove only spaces that are clearly not part of the key. YouTube does not document a specific fix for this whitespace symptom, so treat the check as a practical troubleshooting step—not a confirmed YouTube cause.
Check the key and field first
- Open the right stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Live Control Room and confirm you have selected the stream whose key you intend to use.
- Copy the stream key again. In your encoder’s stream settings, paste it into the Stream Key field. YouTube’s setup guide distinguishes this from the server or stream URL: the URL belongs in the server field, and the key belongs in the Stream Key field. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Inspect the pasted value. Look for a leading or trailing space, or a space within the value that appears accidental. Remove only clearly stray spaces; do not change other characters in the key. This inspection is practical advice based on the copy-and-paste workflow, not a whitespace-specific remedy documented by YouTube.
- Try starting the stream again. If your encoder still reports a startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it: troubleshoot live streaming.
Make sure it is not a server or connection error
A stream-key problem and a server-URL problem are different. The key goes in the encoder’s Stream Key field; the server URL goes in the server field. If the error mentions SSL or a connection, do not assume spaces in the key are responsible. Check that the server URL is correct for the connection type you intend to use and that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance notes that specifying port 443 may help when addressing an SSL error.
If you are configuring an HLS backup server URL, note that YouTube says the HLS backup URL already contains the key, so you do not need to copy the key separately for that backup URL. Follow YouTube’s HLS instructions for that setup.
Reset the key if it may have been exposed
Treat a stream key as a credential. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”: the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. If you shared the key publicly or believe someone else may have seen it, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in your encoder. YouTube’s stream-key management guide says channel owners or managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
