You can build a YouTube rain-ambience stream around a Raspberry Pi by preparing a rights-cleared looping video, sending it through an encoder to YouTube Live, and keeping the Pi, network connection, and power supply running. Start with a modest 720p30 profile and test it in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving it unattended. The specifications available for Raspberry Pi 5 make it a plausible starting point, but they do not establish a tested Pi encoding recipe or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

What you need

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days; confirm current eligibility in YouTube Help before setup (live streaming on YouTube).
  • A Raspberry Pi, microSD card, and compatible power supply. Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a microSD slot. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/5A supply and says active cooling helps the board perform under load. These are hardware specifications, not proof that a particular stream profile will run reliably on the board.
  • Raspberry Pi OS, which is the official supported operating system, plus an encoder capable of sending a live stream to YouTube. Raspberry Pi Imager can write the OS to a microSD card.
  • A continuous source: for example, a rain video with matching audio that loops cleanly. Use files you created or have permission to transmit and archive.
  • A stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the full outgoing video and audio bitrate, plus headroom.

Raspberry Pi’s current OS download page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit dated September 15, 2026, based on Debian 13 (Trixie) with Linux kernel 6.18. Raspberry Pi 5 also supports legacy Bookworm. Release information can change; check the Raspberry Pi OS downloads page when preparing the card.

Prepare the rain video and check usage rights

Choose a source that can run continuously without a visible or audible interruption at the loop point. A static or gently moving visual is usually simpler to encode than a complex scene, but test the exact file you intend to stream. Make sure the rain recording, any music, and the visual are yours or licensed for both live transmission and any YouTube archive. YouTube’s livestream terms say the creator represents that they have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including applicable music rights and public-performance licenses (Livestream terms and conditions).

Do not assume that a clip is safe because it is labelled “royalty-free,” appears elsewhere on YouTube, or is short. Read the license for the specific asset and confirm it permits livestreaming and archiving on YouTube. Content ID claims or other rights complaints can disrupt a stream or its archive.

Set up the Raspberry Pi

  1. Use Raspberry Pi Imager to write Raspberry Pi OS to a microSD card. Insert it in the Pi and complete the operating-system setup.
  2. Connect the Pi to your network. If possible, use Gigabit Ethernet; Wi-Fi is also available on Raspberry Pi 5. The product specifications establish that both interfaces exist, but do not establish that one will be more reliable in your particular location.
  3. Place the board where it can receive suitable ventilation. For sustained encoding load, Raspberry Pi says active cooling helps Raspberry Pi 5 perform under load. Use the recommended 5V/5A USB-C supply.
  4. Install and configure an encoder that can send your chosen continuous video and audio source to YouTube Live. The available official guidance does not provide a Pi-specific command, encoder build, or tested configuration, so verify software compatibility and restart behavior for the encoder you choose rather than treating any generic command as a validated Raspberry Pi recipe.

Create the YouTube live stream and connect the encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room and create or configure a stream. Confirm the channel is eligible before planning a 24/7 broadcast.
  2. In the stream’s settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding ingest fields in your encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses these details to receive the outgoing stream (stream with an encoder).
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or store it in a publicly accessible script. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Configure the encoder to send the rain video and audio as a continuous live source. YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Confirm the encoder and the chosen codecs work together before starting.

Choose a conservative starting stream profile

For an initial test, use 720p at 30 frames per second. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance gives 2 Mbps as the video bitrate target for 720p30. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee of stable operation on a particular Pi, network, or encoder. Check YouTube’s recommended encoder settings for current values and supported combinations.

Set the encoder to constant bitrate where available, use a compatible audio codec, and avoid raising resolution or frame rate until the stream runs cleanly at the lower profile. A mostly static rain scene may not benefit viewers enough from a heavier profile to justify additional encoding and upload demand. YouTube’s recommendation is a starting point; the actual stream-health indicators and a sustained test should determine whether it works for your setup.

Check upload bandwidth before you go live

Outgoing upload capacity is the constraint, not the download speed shown in a broadband plan. Account for the video bitrate and audio, then leave at least 20% upload headroom, as YouTube recommends in its streaming tips. For a 2 Mbps video target, the connection needs to carry more than that once audio and headroom are included. Test at the location and time the Pi will run; nominal plan speeds do not prove that the same upload rate is continuously available.

  • Prefer a wired connection if it is practical at the Pi’s location, and test the real stream rather than inferring performance from interface specifications.
  • Run representative moving video and audio during the test; a still image or silent test may not expose every issue.
  • Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health for dropped frames, interruptions, or other warnings before treating the setup as ready for extended operation.

Test, start, and monitor the stream

  1. Start the encoder with the intended loop and profile, then check that Live Control Room receives the signal and displays the expected preview.
  2. Review stream health and listen to the audio. Check that the rain loop does not click, go silent, or show a black frame at its transition.
  3. Verify that viewers can access the live stream and that YouTube is not reporting an ingest or rights issue.
  4. Keep the stream running through a representative test period and observe the Pi, power, network, and encoder. Confirm how your selected software behaves if the source ends or the encoder stops, and how you will restart it.
  5. After launch, continue checking the broadcast. A Raspberry Pi setup is not automatically fail-safe: the cited hardware and YouTube guidance do not promise uninterrupted operation, automatic recovery, or a specific 24/7 runtime.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a signal Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not started, or the channel cannot yet go live. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio, then check the ingest URL and key character by character. Keep the key private; replace it if it may have been exposed.
Stream health shows interruptions or dropped frames Insufficient or variable upload bandwidth, encoder load, or a connection problem. Check actual upload performance during a representative stream, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test at a lower resolution or bitrate if needed. Inspect the Pi and encoder under sustained load.
Audio or video stops at the loop point The source file or encoder is not repeating continuously, or the media has a gap at the loop boundary. Preview the exact source through multiple loops before going live; adjust or replace the media and verify the encoder’s loop behavior.
The Pi becomes unstable during sustained streaming Power, heat, or software compatibility may be contributing. Check that the supply meets Raspberry Pi’s 5V/5A recommendation, provide ventilation and consider active cooling, and validate the encoder with a lower-complexity profile.
A stream or archive receives a copyright claim An audio or visual asset may not be cleared for live use, worldwide transmission, or archiving. Review the asset’s actual license and use content for which you hold the necessary rights. Do not rely on a label or attribution alone.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded rain videos without keeping a Pi or computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
