To reduce gaps between clips, keep one FFmpeg process and one outgoing YouTube stream running across the transitions; do not stop and restart the stream for each video. Then choose the right concatenation method: use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for compatible files when you want to avoid re-encoding, or the concat filter when inputs need processing or re-encoding. Neither method is a universal fix: incorrect duration metadata, audio and video streams ending at different times, timestamp problems, ingest settings, or connection faults can all cause interruptions. The files and logs determine which applies.

First find out where the gap is coming from

A gap heard between two clips can originate in the media, in how FFmpeg joins the files, in the encoded output, or after the stream reaches YouTube. A single continuous output avoids restarting the outgoing stream at every boundary, but it cannot correct every source-file or ingest problem.

  • It happens at the same clip boundary: inspect the files’ durations, timestamps, and audio/video stream lengths, then check the concat method.
  • The output is already wrong in FFmpeg or a local recording: investigate source audio routing, encoder errors, CPU load, and the media files.
  • The local output sounds right but viewers hear a gap: check YouTube’s stream-health messages and outbound connection.

These are diagnostic branches, not proof of a particular cause. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output, an archived stream, and connection strength when isolating a problem.

Inspect the clips before joining them

Check every file’s streams, codecs, sample rates, channel layouts, time bases, and actual duration. Confirm that each clip has the expected audio and video tracks and whether those tracks finish together. The concat demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases; unequal stream lengths and inaccurate duration information can affect timestamp placement. See the FFmpeg Project’s concat demuxer documentation.

One way to inspect a file is:

ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format clip1.mp4

Repeat for each clip and compare the audio and video stream details and durations. This command reports file metadata; it does not prove that every timestamp is valid or that a transition will be gap-free. If a file’s duration metadata looks wrong, verify it against the actual media before changing a playlist’s timing.

Choose the concat method that fits the files

Method Use it when Important limitation
Concat demuxer The files have compatible streams and avoiding re-encoding matters. It relies on duration information and matching stream characteristics. Unequal stream lengths can lead to gaps.
Concat filter You need to process or re-encode the inputs. Each segment must start at timestamp zero. For non-final segments, shorter audio streams may be padded to match the longest stream.
acrossfade You deliberately want adjacent audio to blend. It changes the sound of the transition; it does not verify or repair timestamps.

FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat filter for re-encoding from the concat demuxer when streams can be joined without re-encoding. Do not expect -c copy to make incompatible files compatible or repair incorrect durations.

Use the concat demuxer for compatible files

Create a text file such as playlist.txt, with one file entry per clip:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'

Use paths appropriate to the working directory. If a path contains a single quote, escape it correctly for the concat file format. With compatible inputs, an illustrative remux command is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

Replace STREAM_KEY with the private key from your YouTube live control room; do not publish or share it. This is an example for compatible inputs and a YouTube RTMP destination, not a command guaranteed to work for every file. The demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each later file follows the prior file’s calculated end. Its documentation warns: “Note that it is done globally and may cause gaps if all streams do not have exactly the same length.”

If a file’s stored duration is inaccurate, the concat demuxer supports a duration directive to override it. Use that only when you have established the correct duration; guessing can shift later timestamps rather than solve the problem. If the files do not meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements, use a processing/re-encoding workflow instead.

Use the concat filter when processing or re-encoding

The filter is appropriate when the clips need normalization or you are already re-encoding. Its segments must start at timestamp zero. It uses the longest stream duration for each non-final segment and can pad a shorter audio stream with silence so that the segment lines up with its longest stream. That padding behavior is important: if audio ends before video, the result may be silence at the end of that segment rather than a seamless handoff. The FFmpeg filters documentation describes the concat filter’s timestamp and padding behavior.

For clips that each contain one video and one audio stream, the filter graph follows this form:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
[0:v]setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v0];[0:a]asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a0];
[1:v]setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v1];[1:a]asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a1];
[v0][a0][v1][a1]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[v][a]

In a complete command, provide each clip as an input, put the graph after -filter_complex, map [v] and [a], and encode the result into a format YouTube accepts. This two-clip graph assumes every input has both streams; adapt it for clips with different stream layouts. Resolution, frame rate, pixel format, and output encoder settings also need to suit the material and your encoder. Because those details vary by files and setup, there is no single safe full command for every stream.

Add a crossfade only if you want a blended transition

FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter blends audio from adjacent inputs. You can set the duration and curves and control whether the inputs overlap; FFmpeg’s documentation example uses acrossfade=d=10 as an example, not a universal recommendation. Choose a duration that suits the program material. A crossfade changes the transition’s sound; it does not fix wrong duration metadata, missing samples, or timestamp discontinuities.

Keep YouTube’s ingest audio settings consistent

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio codec options. Its current encoder-settings page recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; its listed advanced audio bitrates are 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. These are YouTube recommendations, not a repair for bad source timing. Check the YouTube encoder settings for your stream configuration.

  • Send one audio stream. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance says the ingest stream should contain only one audio stream.
  • If you configure primary and backup streams, match their audio sample rates.
  • YouTube’s video settings guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. This is a video encoder setting, not a direct fix for an audio gap.

Test a representative transition before going live

  1. Use the actual files or representative clips. Include the audio and motion characteristics expected in the live program.
  2. Watch and listen to the preview. Check the transitions, not only the opening seconds.
  3. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. Resolve reported ingest or configuration errors before relying on the stream.
  4. Inspect the encoder output and local archive. If the gap is present there, focus on the clips, timestamps, concat graph, source routing, encoder errors, and CPU load.
  5. Compare local output with the viewer experience. If the local output is healthy but the live stream is not, investigate outbound connectivity and the ingest path.

YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A short test with the intended files and settings is more useful than assuming a command will behave the same for every collection of clips.

Check rights and channel suitability

Only stream recordings you have the rights and permissions to use. Repeating video does not change whether you are authorized to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting documents linked above cover ingest configuration and diagnosis; they do not establish that particular content is cleared for a channel. Review the rights for each recording and YouTube’s applicable channel and copyright requirements before scheduling a stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings and playlists, StreamNeo is a separate cloud workflow rather than an FFmpeg audio-gap repair tool: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; clips are streamed as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and 24/7 looping and playlists. StreamNeo is for YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or use the copyright safety checklist before streaming recordings. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
